WHY ARE SOUTH AFRICAN UNIVERSITIES SITTING ON BILLIONS??
This is a video about endowment funds in South Africa and the money that flows from government to state funded institutions but importantly the money that supposedly sits and does nothing to help students. The money that lies in university endowment funds.
See one conversation that came up during #FeesMustFall was that there was no money to fund universities adequately enough in key areas, so some of the activists asked why not redirect some of the billions sitting in varsity endowment war chests. Why not use that money to subsidize students looking for an education?
The fact is that In South Africa our universities like many in the west, have billions or rands or dollars, sitting in endowment funds but how and for what they use these funds for, remains contentious for those who give and for those who feel squeezed by fees.
Also we look at how a how much money some universities have and how some rely on endowment funds for key programs.

It's really unfortunate that historically significant institutions in the Eastern Cape are often overlooked and undervalued, despite having birthed some of the best South Africans.

Well who is to blame? the professionals that these universities have produced are the ones who need to comeback and create the funds to support these institutions i mean most of them are in government, but you look at the other side about what happened in Fort Hare and realised that we black people are responsible for our downfall.

When WSJ did a similar video about where American higher-ed institutions get their funding from, I started to ask myself questions about how SA universities "sustain" themselves and who funds them, luckily Zimasa was there to quench my curiosity. Danko!

I also learnt this from an channel called Valuetainment by an American guy who revealed that schools(varsities) get government funding but the funny thing is that they're "tax exempt" meaning that don't pay tax at all. But then the most painful thing is that we as low-class workers don't afford to pay for our children's fees even when the money is actually from our pockets. It's witchcraft.
9 out of 26 universities in South Africa have endowment funds, rest a poor universities literally living hand to mouth like their students.

It’s more representative of the fact that we blacks don’t put our money where our mouth is. We watch these universities get funded by their own whites and we don’t do the same. We watch them fund their organisations like Afriforum and we don’t, we watch them fund politics and we don’t. We have no one to blame but ourselves because I know for a fact there’s MANY rich black people in our provinces. We rather loot temder monies and send that to ANC cronies and not even the actual party rather than give to our universities. Blacks are wealthy. We just don’t value our future enough to back ourselves financially and do what’s right.

Entitlement clouds the mind. Without these endowments, SA universities would have collapsed from underfunding. Not all money must be used up.
@stylmandurbanite5098

@@KM_Zitha The crux here is the universities making it difficult for an ordinary South African to study yet they can accommodate anyone and everyone. I am not sure what are you referring to about the entitlement. However, everybody is entitled to education and it is one's choice to decide if they want education or not. In this country, we've so much confusion, poverty, inequality, etc. because of private funders. And that's wrong because no one funds one for free. Therefore, the question is what are they benefiting from their endowments . . .? Until you answer this question you'll then understand why it is important for the government to own our universities so that no one (individually) is entitled to call the shot whenever they feel like doing so, especially if you're not a South African!

Thanks bro! As always you make us understand that there's many moving parts that aren't accounted for when we outrage as a people! I do find it interesting that so many of our elites don't find it necessary to help Universities by funding them or help them connect to resources that could help. Too many aspects of South African society tell the disadvantaged that they simply don't matter enough. To me it seems politicking the issues, vilifying people of means for their interests and changing the names of historical buildings within the institutions matters more to our government and their mouthpieces within the Universities...

More than just relevant. The issue of endowments needs to be further understood, and universities (and funders) need to apply the funds better. At present it seems like there is a competition on who will have the highest distributable reserves, instead of how much of that was applied without a significant negative impact on the university's balance sheet. We will see no improvement if we do not apply the cash SIDE NOTE: I think you should consider a video on the current "specialised" courses we have versus a more general outlook of our qualifications. Globally, you will find a person majoring in finance and having minors in History, politics, etc. This is more beneficial than building robots through a system that just focuses on one small item... that is for post-grad
This video was somewhat strange. It was clearly well informed, structured and had a very reasonable conclusion. However, the introduction and video description throws the accusation that the endowment funds are selfish and do not advantage students, which is largely refuted by the rest of the video. I don't know man. I agree with most of the video but disagree with the argument you're trying to sneak in. Endowment funds, as you mentioned, are donations. Students aren't entitled to that money😅. The universities, within reason, can do as they please with it.

The elites in these colleges are chewing the money coming from these foundations or endowments. For example in some of the universities in SA there are a lot a courses that are outdated due to the fact that these universities do not want to spent the investment on school related things, e.g purchasing advanced equipment for experiment purposes and so on. Rather, they keep these courses because they are not costly, as they spent minimum investment on them.😢

The endowments usage are decided by those who fund them. Have you not listened to the 1st part of the video. The universities don’t get to pick and choose. I don’t believe Wits for example is ok with not being able to register students, feed or house them while they have money in their accounts but if the donor highlights the money to be for maintenance for example they can’t decide on their own to use it to fund academic activity. If they do that they’re engaging in fraud, it’s unlikely that the company overseeing the fund usage will even release that money for the university to spend and if the university does this behind their backs and it gets exposed, which it 100% will they’ll never get endowments again because they can’t be trusted to safeguard money. The government cannot take the Home Affairs budget to go assist Eskom the same way you can’t take Eben Etzebeth’s donation to go buy beds for students when he said he was donating to the rugby team🤷🏿♂️

@@dumisamarafu8543 bro why would you watch an entire video giving information you clearly didn’t know before watching it just to dispute the very content of that exact video as if I’m the one laying down the facts? Vabaza clearly stated that some endowments are decided upon the donors to decide where the money goes and the universities can do nothing but comply. What’s hard to understand about that? An endowment is no different to a will. If I state in my will that my wealth will only fund the university costs for my children that won’t change. If my house burns to the ground my children can’t use that money to buy a new house. That’s basic law and that’s basic contracts my guy. I don’t know what’s hard for you to grasp about that. He mentioned Stellenbosch endowment clearly promoting Afrikaans in the university and it’s a fact that Stellies still behaves according to the instructions of the donor even after his death. You don’t want to elaborate because you don’t have any facts you can stand on. Don’t dispute me go tell Vabaza he’s lying then. It’s his video ,his content and his facts. I’m not gonna argue about what he’s saying out of his own mouth based on his own research. The university will come up with it’s own main problems to be solved with money from the state and money from fees, not endowments. Those two things aren’t the same. Universities get more money form fees and government funding than they do endowments and donations. The only reason why endowments end up becoming billions is exactly because the universities don’t have access to spend the money on whatever they want hence the money keeps growing like a savings account. They are spending less than they receive. The whole reason why it’s growing is because it’s not available to be used. What’s hard to understand here man? In endowments there’s donors, accountants, auditors, lawyers. You couldn’t steal or loot that money if you tried. You always hear of corruption with universities and nsfas etc but you’ve never heard of any corruption with endowments BECAUSE THAT DOESNT HAPPEN AMD NEVER HAS….EVER!!! Don’t fight me, fight the facts.

When it comes to massive amounts of money, there are sooo mamy intricacies involved when it comes to the terms and conditions including clauses when it comes to these contracrmtual agreements so much so that parties uninvolved n the actual admin and legal scrutiny of such dealings will NEVER truly know the purpose of such dealings apart from their reliance on statistics and official PR narratives and therefore always ultimately skimming off the top of such dealings without ever having a true in-depth understanding the reason of these large monies flowing around.
