Is Brexit threatening our food security?

In this new Federal Trust video, Liz Webster of Save British Farming, describes the illusions that led some farmers to vote for Brexit. These illusions are now being contradicted by reality. In a volatile world membership of the European Union was and would be again the best guarantee of a secure food supply for the United Kingdom.

there will be no Swiss deal. EU ruled that out already. Norway will block EFTA membership of UK. So the only option is to apply for candidate EU membership and accept ALL EU rules and ECJ as well as the Euro currencies. Oh, by the way. Turkey applied in 1987 EU membership and failed the test, like UK will. And do not forget that several sovereign EU countries will veto UK back in EU

I grew up in the UK in a farming community and then roughly thirty years ago we left the UK and only recently took the nationality of our adopted country, The Netherlands. While the statistics do suggest that a large number of farmers were persuaded to vote for brexit, it was not significantly higher than some parts of the UK. However that does not make a good news story and nor does saying that 75% of British people living abroad did or would have voted remain, yet the media still drag out little Englanders living in Spain some of whom were the exception and now regret their vote (or not) to leave the EU. But I see brexit from the other side of the fence. None of the major parties in the UK have expressed sincere regret about brexit and some are still harping on about how bad the EU is and how undemocratic it is. All lies of course but the result is that we are not seeing the truth coming from politicians which is that people in the UK, including farmers, were often misled into believing that the EU was bad for them. So given that these insults to the EU are still defended or ignored by British politicians, my question is why should we wish to have such a belligerent group of politicians trying to regain access to our markets? Many of our sectors have benefitted from the exit of the UK and now face lower competition, would you want to undo those benefits? I seriously think your focus needs to be in getting UK politicians to actively address the lies they fed to the people. Get politicians that are not tainted by the exceptionalism that lead to brexit but instead ones that actively seek to cooperate with their neighbours.

3:45 Chickens reared "in sheds" is a euphemism for large scale intensive farming. "New figures reveal that the number of large industrial-sized pig and chicken farms in the UK continues to rise, with close to 2,000 across the country. In 2017, the then environment secretary Michael Gove told MPs: “One thing is clear: I do not want to see, and we will not have, US-style farming in this country.” However, the number of industrial-sized pig and poultry units in the UK has risen by 7% from 1,669 in 2017 to 1,786 this year." It really did not matter how farmers themselves voted, they did a huge, massive advertising campaign for Brexit. In rural Britain, field after field on every road was displaying huge hoardings, shouting LEAVE from every corner. And later in 2019 the same farmer's fields had huge Tory hoardings too. To now only talk about how farmers voted, is gaslighting. Their advertising campaign said Brexit in no uncertain terms. When farmers take responsibility for that, their concerns now would make more sense.

We were told there would be severe food shortages within two months of leaving the EU in 2020 and they never materialised, including during the COVID crisis and in spite of the supply chain issues caused by the Ukraine war. I went shopping today - there were no shortages of anything, either in my main supermarket or in my local farm shop. I see far more empty shelves in supermarkets when I visit family in Sweden - and their food prices have rocketed! She says we don't eat mutton in the UK - what nonsense! We only don't eat it because we can no longer get it - because it's all exported. I love mutton, slowly cooked in a good red wine sauce. We were also told that our X-ray machines would stop working because we wouldn't be able to obtain isotopes and that was shown up as rubbish. We were also told there would be no insulin for diabetics: more complete tripe as there is no such shortage. We had a referendum and voted to leave the EU and Single Market. Some people never respected that vote because, like their beloved Brussels oligarchy, they despise democracy. Fortunately, rejoining is not in prospect.
