I think Aikido took a weird turn when people started to romantisize the concept of a "non-violent" martial art, similar to Judo. They just liked the unrealistic idea of defeating an opponent with little to no effort and the aim to creating a frustrating situation for the attacker to not be able to actually even touch and therefor hurt you. So there were a lot "masters" who abstracted the original execution of Aikido to something highly impractical and almost useless, but it is important to mentian, that not all Aikido masters took that route, there is till enough "schools" that teach it in the original, aggressive and highly functional way. And no matter how much of a joke Steven Segal is as a person, his Aikido is totally legit and I am glad he puts that to proof with his latest public demonstrations. And now with the emergence of MMA and people exploring and mixing different concepts, the original Aikido became more relevant again, because it is indeed functional if you are lucky enough to find an Aikido school that doesn't teach the BS-Aikido.

Get OFF that line of attack ! You never want to be on the receiving end of someone's full force...... that's what Aikido has taught me. And you're right, you can't dodge forever. Better to move in to his blindspot. Take him off balance

I think it's all good. I've been studying Qigong and I'm starting to get a better understanding of the health benefits of Ki. I guess you could compare it to Tai Chi where the source of moves are practical but you wouldn't train in some styles of Tai Chi for self-defence.

Ueshiba knew more than what he taught in my opinion. He was a student of classical Jujitsu. He had a lot more knowledge than what is taught in Aikido. I wouldn’t say he was holding back but he had streamlined it. Hence Aikido. Aikido needs Judo. It needs actual sparring and a ground game.

He's the reason i studied Aikido for 10 years. Azu its like you said in one of your earlier videos yrs ago. Aikido gives you choice. Keep up the good work Aikido Flow family.

It's never been the art, more the way it is trained. Pre WW2 Aikido/Aikijutsu involved a practical outcome as the focus, and randoori often ended on the floor. Modern Aikido has become cooperative nonsense from a practical sense, and very few dojo's pressure test anything, spar, or even formally teach absolute martial basics like punching, kicking, basic takedowns and takedown defences etc. That's fine but dont call what you do a "martial Art" because it patently isnt. There are a growing number of groups out there like ourselves thankfully that are entirely focused upon employing traditional Aiki "principles" but with efficient and reliable outcomes.

If you look at nippon kenpo which along with kudo is the most brutal of Japanese martial arts its ancestry is from the same well as Aikido a lot of NK practioners also do aikido and use it as their "soft" training. The trouble is in the west where people seem to stay in one martial arts camp and see their art as "best" and the contrast between hard and soft martial arts doesn't seem to be as appreciated as much.

The title implies it actually was relevant at some time ;-) It's best and really only example practicioner is Steven Seagal and that is a poor lot to toss your hat in with. It was never shown off in the UFC - which was shameful that was the test for all the traditional arts back in the day. To the founder - he was a master of several arts and Aikido was his combination, which was brutally effective. What you see when you watch and read about him is a master at work, not easy to duplicate, and not easy to train towards. Aikido is not for the feint of heart if you are 'doing it right'

Personally I believe that Aikidoka need to practice with a partner that is not cooperating all of the time. The practice of Hikitategeiko teaches Aikidoka how to change from on techniques to anothef if a technique fails.

But are more populat arts out there like judo kung fu, karate etc. Until covid i did genbukan traditional jujitsu thaijitsu and nimpobugi. I enjoyed it at the time did this 10 years off and on. Then did 10 days of bjj, then they had to close due to covid too.

I have to disagree with what you said about O Sensei. He was very big on atemi. He is quoted as saying "atemi is 70% and technique is 30%" and that "one strike can kill". I think the 'floatiness' problem came from ukes becoming TOO cooperative over time. It's a difficult line because, of course, ukemi is about protecting yourself but we are all guilty of taking it too readily sometimes to help tori look/feel good. Often you watch aikido and it seems like uke is practically throwing themselves.

MOST martial arts are WATERED DOWN CRAP compared to the ORIGINALS of each art. These arts were for SURVIVAL and NOT the " sweet passive sport waterered down BS" that they are now!!! Aikido--- came from aikijutsu and is now TEN SHIN Aikido--- extremely powerful and works GREAT on the streets...

Seagal's movie choreography is not Aikido. It's a mix of techniques, mostly Jujutsu. And he has almost never user the main Aikido principle in movies. BTW, Aikido is indeed not relevant for the street. But its principles are and have always been relevant. Timinig, positioning, body relaxation, disbalancing. A few masters like Rick Hotton understand their value.
