I actually did this because of this video on a 2006 ford mustang, and it was my first big job. I did it while I was pulling the engine so it is not fully the same , but if you plan to tackle this I have some advice regardless. First, he isn't kidding when he says do your research, Take tons of videos and pictures of everything together , and as you take it apart, stay organized by keeping bolts in Baggies and marking on them what they go to. Now planning is key you're going to need too dedicate a lot of time to this especially if you're relatively new don't expect it to be done on a weekend Plan accordingly. Speaking of planning, order everything you need before you start the job you're going to be very annoyed that you wasted an entire week in the garage because you have to wait until the UPS gods deliver your aftermarket clutch line you desperately wanted. Biggest tip of all. If you're learning how to drive a manual try to stick to an oe style clutch when picking parts Try to stay away from 6 puck, or really aggressive stylings, you can go to stage twos to account for horsepower, but you're going to stall out so much at red lights trying to learn on a hyper aggressive design; ask me how I know. Other than that take pictures of your progress, and take pride in your ride I grin constantly as I im banging gears on the road It really is a riot.

Hey i know this was posted a year ago but you have no clue how long I've been waiting to see something like this. I bought my very first car and it's an auto 2007 mustang gt. I've been trying to figure out how to do a manual swap, or if it was even possible on our cars. Finally finding someone who's done it was a real relief, if you're still active on this account I'd really appreciate any info you got on how to do it and what to get!

I work at [company that owns and operates lots of delivery vehicles]. I get to see the vehicle shop some days, and occasionally take a look at all the vehicles that are part way through a repair job. No lifts in use, ever... but they do have a whole bunch of jack stands. I saw a few that were clearly labeled as 6 tons maximum weight per jack stand. The vehicles that sit on 'em are actually somewhere around 6 tons empty weight (that's the total on all four wheels). I don't actually know why there aren't any lifts but I would suppose cost and safety might be involved. It doesn't appear they actually need to do all that many repairs requiring a jack or lift anyway (relative to all the repairs where the truck sits on all of its wheels instead)

The only Manual Transmission swap I've ever done, or to be more accurate, helped a friend who had the mechanical experience, was on a 1981 XE Ford Falcon. The reverse gear in the stock 3 speed auto shat itself, and I managed to find a reconditioned 5 speed manual for a good price. We did it on ramps in my sloping driveway and took the whole weekend to finish, but it was the best thing done to that car. The 5 speed manual went like dream and the Falcon became a hell of a lot more fun to drive.

A manual swap is definitely looks and sounds more intimidating than it actually is. Had a roommate who needed to do one on his Volvo wagon after his automatic trans died and his brother was already planning on swapping his current manual for a newer/better one. My roommate took the old manual from his brother and put it in his car and, for a dude who hadn’t done a whole lot of work on cars before, he managed to knock it out in a weekend with the help of his brother (who was a decent amount more experienced) and his dad. The only reason I pretty much sat around and watched was because they didn’t need any extra help. The 3 of them got it done no problem.

I'm looking into manual swapping my car. Yeah it's probably easier to sell it and buy a manual but the car itself has a lot of meaning to me and I want to keep it for as long as possible. This video was awesome on helping me figure out if I should commit or not.

Keep in mind, depending on the car, depends on what you have to do to make the car run with a transmission that was not original to the car. Some cars, you have to make the car think its always in neutral, (neutral safety switch) but then you gotta deal with the reverse lights - this is a common issue. Other cars like this one, you have to lobotomize the trans controller. and others, you'll have to find a used working transmission controller from a manual car. (keep in mind some cars you'll also have to grab not only the transmission but the engine computer for that car as well - as they can be paired.) So remember to do your research for your specific model of car, don't want to get stuck trying to figure out how to get it working.

That said if I do end up gear swapping I have kept in mind everything you said. It's just a lancer so nothing fancy and here in aus sourcing the gear box and even ecu for a manual version is easy.

I suppose a finishing touch would be to instal a slightly shorter gear stick so one can quickly grasp the top of the knob to change gears rather than grasping the stick like it was a railway switch lever. BTW, I love Zach's enthusiasm and charm. He reminds me of Kyle Hill. :)

Such an interesting market you have there in the US. In most parts of EU, you will only find E36 with a manual, you must pay quite higher price to buy an automatic.

While manuals might be cheaper to make, they don’t turn enough of a profit in the states, and everyone buys an auto. It’s easier to make an expensive technology cheaper if the demand for it is significantly higher than the actual cheaper option. And it’s just a scenario of the manuals out there are driven by car enthusiast, so they tend to be driven pretty hard

  • @TheKos2Kos

You guys are both right and wrong depending on if this is a new car or used car in the USA and what the demand is for the particular USA market. For this used car, the manuals are more expensive because of the small market of people thay buy these for racing drives the price of the used car up as more and more manuals in good condition are hard to find. So the automatics of this used car are actually cheaper. In general a used car that isnt known for racing potential, then the automatic would be more expensive. Most new automatics in the USA cost pretty much the same as the manual. However, I have seen examples of the manual costing more than the automatic with the rest of the specs being identical. That's just marking up the price for the manual or selling the automatic closer to the MSRP because a lot of dealers dont carry manuals and the rare manual American is just willing to pay a little more just to have the manual . I recently saw this was the case for some of the manual 2021 Toyota corollas

This was an easy manual swap. A beginner could do this over a weekend easily if you already have everything (I do mean everything) you need. I've manual swapped many different cars, some are a real nightmare and some are cake like this one. Honda and GM seem to be the easiest. I did a swap on a Focus and it was terrorizing, thought it would've been easy. Just another reason to hate fords. Do your research though, some cars actually are faster with an automatic. Mopars are notorious for this.

This makes me want to work on cars! I would absolutely love to do something like this. I am not a mechanic but I have changed my slave cylinder located in the transmission on my 02 ranger, changed the clutch, changed the brake lines and some electrical for the lights I swapped from a Ford explorer. I just watch KZread and copy what they do. So I'm definitely going to try this with my 07 Honda Accord.

There was a TON of space in the footwell of my 05 elantra, SO MUCH room. My shoulder TOTALLY wasnt trying to fuse itself to my ear and orbital at the same time. 10/10 would recommend. edit: Yes, sigh, i ended up having to take my entire drivers seat out to get in there.
