Is A BRT System Better for Your City in Cities Skylines | City of Crater Lake
Today's episode is about us exploring a Bus Rapid Transit System in the City of Crater Lake in Cities Skylines. I have recently been watching a lot of material on this type of transit system, and being from a city that has invested so heavily in it, I felt it was time to embrace this mode of transportation. This is more of a test than anything else, but I have to say. I like how it turned out, and I think we will be seeing more of this. What do you think? : )

    What you can do is connect TRAMS in such a way that they operate in small areas and connecrtt BRT and Metro to those so that your ridership increases

    The raised buses are a super cool idea, but don't they just become inefficient monorails? Monorails can hold significantly more people and exist over a road in the base game. Sorry if I missed you saying you did not want to use monorails in the city but I'm curious why you chose this option over them?

  • @CityZilla

    @CityZilla

    It's mostly an experiment. In real life people choose BRT because of it flexibility. Monorail can't go to road and costs more to maintain. Buses are really easy for cities to expand upon.

    There's an easy way to get elevated segments on top of your road, just use the parallel option in the network multi tool and set distance to 0 and height to whatever you like and also make sure to disable collision so that you can get pillars too.

    this is interesting my mind is starting to think about how u could incorporate this into canalville, like it would be a bus highway that would go around canalville as a short tour around the outside of the city after they got off the plane or train, also i already got a name if u do another city busopolis, gotta continue the theme canalville so then busopolis or busopoli

    @@CityZilla yah it would be interesting a city for each type of transit, we already have crater lake which would be the basic city with all transit, then we have canalville which is mostly ferries and other ship transit, next would be busopolis which would be mainly bus transit, next would maybe be trainopoli which would consist of train and subway transport and maybe trams depending on if we consider them city trains since they are on tracks or railed buses, and this next one would be dumb, a city where the only transit is taxi's XD

    Really stunning to see the result. I was sceptical about the Vanilla Overpass in the beginning, but the stations are perfect. I think a great real world example would be Oberhausen, Germany. They converted an old cargo rail line between the cities two major railway stations in the 1990s - and it is also stopping at one of Germany's biggest malls and concert venues that opened the same year. Opening that combined bus and tramway increased ridership by 50% citywide. They also have multiple lines entering and exiting the busway at different points continuing their routes through regular roads. One thing they do not do: 32:29 Spruce St and 34:45 Moore St - you leave the main route, go into those little spurs to reach a stop and then go back to the main route. There are different approaches: 1. if the Spruce St bus hub was not the airport bus hub but rather one you can easily move, you'd move that to the place where the spur connects to the main route now - regular busses would adjust to the BRT network they are giving access to. The spur line would more or less disappear. 2. Keep the spur because you have something like an airport to cover. Have Line A mainly ignore the spur, stick to the main route but stop at the intersection of main route and spur line. Line B would terminate at the airport bus hub or in Moore St loop and turn left onto the main route coming back the same way; Line C would do the same but turn right. That way the spur will not become a detour for those who do not want to travel there; the overall attractiveness of the BRT is improved. Btw line B, C do not need to terminate, the spur could also be their path onto regular roads. What about other bus routes? The question is not which line can stay and which line can go ... it is rather: how will they change. Like a metro, monorail or train line, the BRT is the spine of the network - regular busses and also the tram have to act as ribs and connect more or less perpendicular to the spine. Most of your old lines will have spine-like segments and rib-like segments. The task is now to remove the spine-like segments (which are now slower alternatives to the BRT) and adjust rib-like segments to feed into the BRT more effectively. Check 51°29'21.6"N 6°52'25.7"E on Google Maps - the elevated mall/arena station in Oberhausen. Thank you for all the effort in this video - the timelapses are enormous. It looks like multiple hours of gameplay, well condensed. It would help with map orientation if you put up some CSL Map View graphics of the current transit network on your community tab or insta (link currently broken).

    Thanks for these awesome ideas! Yes this network was a doozy to build out. I wish I would have been able to spend more time optimizing it. I think this next week we will spend an episode looking at it and improving our network to adjust for the new layouts. Thanks for the real world examples as well. I will definitely be checking those out! : )

    @@CityZilla www.stoag.de/fileadmin/dokumente/20-04-0876_Liniennetzplan_2020_21_p1-2.pdf This would be the whole network map, with the dark blue tram line 112 going the whole busway route between Oberhausen Hbf and Sterkrade Bf. Other lines connecting perpendicularly to the busway is best seen at "Neue Mitte" station. SB-lines are the express busses. Extensions of the 105 tram and maybe the 103 tram from the neighbouring town of Essen (where I live) to the busway have been discussed for more than a decade. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tram_map_of_Bochum_and_Gelsenkirchen.xcf An example of the idea of extra lines for a spur can be seen here - in the East you see "Langendreer (S)" (station of the S-Bahn rail network) which is completely ignored by the original 310 service that only serves the Langendreer town center. Instead the spin-off services 305 and 309 were introduced combining parts of the original service with the spur line when it opened. 310 was cut down from 3 rides per hour to 2, but the extra lines offer another 2 rides per hour adding up to an overall improvement on the shared sections with 15min headways - and matching the 30min. headways of the train service.

    How about you turn the bay closest to the freeway into some sort of port area, as it is accessible for ship traffic and does have some ore industry potential. (Then again, its because i only have knowledge and the game i am playing is just regular release+nightlife on console but yeah, thats just an idea. (Then again i have a habit of left hand traffic with my cities and having city design be a constant battle between the side of me who wants to put in a grid system and the part of me who wants to allow for as intricate of an intersection as possible, so yeah)

  • @CityZilla

    Hey Rune! Glad to see you back! : ) it's pretty tough laying out the road network. I go over it in better detail in the first episode but you have to extend it out a bit above the road using the BRT roads and then snap it to the road. After that you go and delete the snapped segment and raise the section with move it. And repeat for your whole layout. Alternatives are to place next to the road and move it or delete segments of the road in front of where you extend the brt road and then repeat that. I didn't really like having to delete the roads. I found just snapping it and deleting the snapped segment to be a little faster. It's still took a bit to figure out though.
