The Phantom Of The Opera is a famous book by French author Gaston Leroux written in 1909. It was made into a classic silent horror film in 1925 starring Lon Chaney. It was remade as an Oscar nominated color film in 1943 starring Claude Rains. Iron Maiden recorded this song version in 1980 and Andrew Lloyd Weber developed the musical stage play in 1986. It amazes me how many people believe the play came first when it came 75 years after the famous book!

Didn't Robert Englund star in an 80s gory horror remake? There's a great Rock'n'Roll Horror tribute by Brian DePalma called "The Phantom of The Paradise" also. The story has really sunk DEEP into pop culture!

Iron Maiden is probably the premier metal band of the 80's, they sold millions of records with little, or no radio airplay, in a time when there was no KZread, Spodify, Apple music etc.and their shows were legendary!

Just imagine if they had never released, the number of the beast "Song". Maybe they would have got airplay and they would have been an absolute juggernaut, throughout the rest of the eighties.I think they would have reached Led Zeppelin level of popularity.They have 4 incredible songwriters now and back then they had 3.The catalogue is literally stacked with insane high quality; They really don't release any low quality songs. Sublime riffs and melodies and lyrics. Just listening to the 1st 7 albums is mind boggling

Maiden was blacklisted to an extent, but they definitely had some mainstream promotion. They were on MTV, radio, and magazines. They were on a major record label in the USA and were actually the very first metal band ever shown on MTV. They even did an MTV daytime promotional for "Wasting Love" when that song was new. Bruce came on and talked to John Norris and all the kids. He explained how Maiden hired the guy who did the Nirvana Teen Spirit video to do their video. All the talk about Maiden "never had support" is simply false. It is fashionable to say it nowadays, but the fact is, Maiden had plenty of promo. Tons of it. They did tend to operate outside of the conventional music industry though.

@@kevinr278 I think you are understating this. Just because a narrative is prevalent, doesn't mean it is exaggerated. I was growing up in the early 80s, and they got hardly any promotion, no airplay, and MTV didn't really gain significant popularity, until "after" they had already been trying to build a following. I know this, because I wanted to hear more of them in mainstream and, at the time, I was incensed that it was not Happening They were a band who built virtually all of their popularity through live shows, and this shows now.They are far and away the most popular heavy metal band in history, in terms of live show turnouts, worldwide, yet they languish behind Metallica, in terms of album sales.This is partly because of the extreme popularity, of the Black album, but also because Metallica got far more airplay generally, as they came out, luckily, whilst the industry, was already make an example of maiden and at a time when they could really benefit from MTV.

@@Rowlph8888 Funny, because I grew up in the 80's too, and every major store around carried Iron Maiden merchandise, they were on MTV all the time too. I used to stay up late on Saturday nights to see their videos with my big brother. Most of the major music publications around wrote about them. Their pictures were everywhere. You couldn't escape seeing their name. It was everywhere. Stop acting like Maiden was some obscure band that nobody knows about. These guys were every bit as commercial as the hair metal bands. If you think Maiden didn't have any commercial support, you were not looking hard enough. Sure, the parents groups and the PMRC hated Maiden, but you can't tell me they had no support from mainstream sources. They most certainly did. As far as the Metallica Black album goes.... That was a pop record, it doesn't even qualify as metal.

Holy crap! I just realised I bought this album on vinyl 41 years ago. Still sounds as fresh as it did back then. A masterpiece.

I have this CD autographed by Paul Di'Anno 😁. My old college lecturer knows him from when they were touring, and get him to sign it for me.

When Steve Harris (bass) formed Iron Maiden in 1975, he wanted a heavy metal band that could fuse the heaviness of bands like U.F.O. and Thin Lizzy, w/ the prog complexity of Yes and Genesis... So he began writing original songs on his bass, and spent years trying to find a solid band line-up. Finally in 1979, Harris had guitarist Dave Murray and vocalist Paul Di'Anno in the band when they got signed to a record deal. Longtime drummer Doug Sampson opted to quit the band, citing poor health... 2nd guitarist Dennis Stratton joined w/ dummer Clive Burr to record the first Iron Maiden album... 'Phantom of the Opera' was a track on that debut album. The importance of early singer Paul Di'Anno cannot be overlooked... he had a gruff voice w/ a punk rock edge, plus he had a great stage presence that made Iron Maiden a concert attraction in the UK since he joined in 1977 and did their first demos. (Late) Drummer Clive Burr added a frantic swing to the beat that changed the 'feel' of Maiden's songs dramatically, in contrast to Sampson's beats... This initial Iron Maiden line-up did not last... Dennis Stratton was replaced by guitarist Adrian Smith after the tour... In 1981, vocalist Paul Di'Anno was burnt out from touring and was out of the band in 1981 after only 2 albums... Bruce Dickinson joined and changed Maiden's sound again into an arena-ready metal band... and then Clive Burr was replaced in 1983 by drummer Nicko McBrain.

first saw them in 1985 the powerslave tour, in Los Angeles i was 15,the show was so amazing me and my buddies went back the next night and bought scalper tickets, and the show was just as amazing, different set up and everything, and there coming to Anaheim California, in September, i still follow them, I am 53,and I will be there. Tickets $200. UP THE IRONS, this was my first MAIDEN album

And, in fact, the 1910 novel is supposedly based on true legends surrounding the Paris Opera House. The catacombs that connect to the underground sewer are actually there under the real opera house in Paris!

Fast metal can take practice to listen to but once you get it, nothing compares. This song is a freaking masterpiece and it's on their first album. Steve Harris is a genius

Bruce said when he was singing for Sampson and heard Maiden play this when they were opening for Sampson, this was the song that made him want to sing for Maiden.

What a song.. the whole album is incredible. And it was their debut. Strange world and Transylvania are amazing.

"Strange World" from this same album is outstanding. It is a gorgeous song.

My second concert ever and first Maiden concert was Maiden Number of the Beast. They opened for the Scorpions Blackout tour. (ticket was only about $13!!!) I was into early Bruce but loved the Paul years and albums as well. Never saw Paul with them. He was part punk and gave Maiden that early jagged edgy feel and even though it was with Bruce that they took off into the stratosphere, it was that sound with Paul on pipes that really set their foundational reputation as being the real deal. I saw them on the Piece of Mind tour as well. This time they were headlining. Fastway opened for them I think, a combo of Fast Eddie Clark from Motorhead and Pete Way from UFO. I was a big UFO fan as well but never saw them unfortunately. Anyway, Maiden was my favorite when I was a teen until I tuned in and turned on and started on a long strange trip with the Grateful Dead.

@@michaelakkerman407 I saw ACDC on For Those About to Rock and Flick of the Switch tours. Don't remember the ticket prices but well under $20 for sure. About $15 maybe? Even a middle class teenager could scrape or borrow to get a ticket. I got to see a lot of great rock and metal shows. Sometimes even saw what are now known as major bands as the opening act. I saw Metallica on Ride the Lightning with Cliff Burton on bass opening for Y&T. Armored Saint opened for both. Never saw UFO but got to see MSG open for Ted Nugent. I was a big MSG fan as well. Did Saxon also open for Maiden on Piece of Mind? Man I can't quite remember all. Trying to remember who opened for ACDC on those tours. Was it Yngvie or Dokken maybe? I saw them both. But might be confusing them with opening acts for Dio who I also got to see twice in that era.

@@zachhessler8722 the great thing about those prices is that I could see every rock show that came to Seattle or the surrounding area. Now I have to pick and choose which ones I will go to within the year, at over $100 a pop. I'm lucky to have seen most the greats multiple times. Rush the most...but Billy Squire, The Who, Mcartney, Def Leopard I wish I would have seen Pink Floyd and UFO. I'm still trying to get to some shows like Deep Purple and other who are still out there rocking. One show at a time...

@@michaelakkerman407 I haven't been to a concert in ages. $100 a pop? Wow! It's just not the same. How many lawns would you have to mow for a teenager to get that price a ticket? I suppose what you could get for mowing a lawn has gone up too, haha. But not that much. At $5 a pop, 2 or 3 lawns would get you in. I did see Floyd on Delicate Sound of Thunder and Deep Purple on Perfect Strangers. Both were excellent. Seen many more but never saw Rush, the Who, Ozzy, Aerosmith, Van Halen w/ DLR, etc. But I had the opportunity. Concerts were a big part of my life for awhile as it sounds like for you as well. How lucky we were.

I used to drive around at night in high school back in the 80s to this song. Oh the memories of those days are to good

"Remember Tomorrow" is my favorite song on this album. The best I've heard from Iron maiden, my favorite, is on the second album "Killers". The opening track, "The Ides of March", followed by "Wrathchild". Both songs together are in the four and a half minute range and should be played that way. The first transitions to the second. You should give those a try.

I agree and I'm one of those who bought these two first albums when they came out. Loved them and was a little disappointed when the third came out because I love the vibe from the two first Iron Maiden albums. After them two first I thought it became a little too predictable and "commercial". And I actually like Paul Di'Anno better as a singer. Yes, "Remember Tomorrow" is a great Iron Maiden song and probably my favorite too. =)

Try Ides Of March followed by the title track (Killers). While I do wish they would have made more music with Paul, the Bruce era Maiden is pretty amazing too. Its funny because if you ask me to rate their albums, my order is the oldest to the newest. I do go back and forth with their 1st album and Killers being my favorite though.

While I appreciate the early Dickinson version of Maiden, in my opinion the two first albums they made with Di'Anno on vocals are the best two albums they ever made.

Iron Maiden is the most iconic metal band ever... They fill soccer stadiums all over the world still to this dsym no other band or artist can claim that. All without barely any radio play. Long ago they lifted their middle fingers to radio play and mainstream success. They've followed their own path all these years and that's much to appreciate.

We will just forget all about the 1992 daytime MTV promotional blitz Maiden did for the "Wasting Love" video, and the fact they sought out literally the same guy who made Nirvana's debut video to produce it (quite the middle-finger right there) No need to mention that ever again. I'm glad that attempt didn't work out for them because in the long run, it worked out for the better.

Paul has that annoying “ending” on his notes. The music is so good though that I overlook him a bit. The first two albums are classic but with Bruce Maiden became all time greats. Clive is so good in those early albums. Nicks is better but Clive hits hard and sound good. On a side Note, getting rid of Dennis Stratton was such a good move. His solos are ehhh.

I know Bruce is considered an excellent vocalist, but to me he always sounded monotone. The same chord whether talking, singing or screaming. Like someone typed the song lyrics into a Speak-N-Spell. Especially compared to some contemporaries like Halford and Dio.

“Prowler” is my fucking fav song because it’s the first one I ever heard from Maiden. Same with Paul Di’Anno, I love Bruce but the first era will be unforgettable always.

I got my first drumset at 13 years old... Once I got good enough, this was one of the songs I had in my rotation that I could play perfectly. Good memories... The many transitions and how they slowly build up back to the first part of the song was so fun to mimic. And after I type this, I predict I'm totally getting caught air drumming to this reaction video... can't resist.

Got to be one of my favourites!! I love the fact that so much "metal" has been drawn from classical music and Maiden are most probably still the best at it!

I saw them with Paul over there in 1981 after the release of Killers. Only this year I'll see them again. But still believe their first two albums were the best

Great to see someone cover the early stuff. "Killers" was the first record I ever bought (like, for myself, without my mom tugging along). I vividly remember taking it out of the sleeve putting it on (vinyl, you know) and listen to the first chords of "The Ides of March" ringing out. Killers is still my favourite Metal-album and I still have it, tough it crackles a lot and the sleeve is positively tatty.

My absolute favorite from this great album with the original lead singer Paul DiAnno is "Remember Tomorrow". Another really beutiful song from this album is "Strange World". But the whole album is a masterpiece in my opinion.

This is a very technical song to play ! It's from the first album so Paul DiAnno sing instead of Bruce Dickinson, and guitarist Denis Straton is along with Dave Murray instead of Adrian Smith... The first solo (the one in the middle of the song) may be one of the best metla solo ever for me !

I walked into the record store and there was a cardboard display of the cover of "Killers". Eddie holding the axe with blood dripping off of it. I was 10 or 11, had my grass cutting money, and I was like, "I gotta know what that band sounds like!" "Killers" is my favorite album, but "Phantom of the Opera" is my favorite song. Lex is right, there is a lot going on. Sometimes you just have to relax and let the music happen.

This is one of the first two albums with first singer Paul Di Anno when I started listening to them late 70's early 80's first album was "Iron Maiden" that has a song "Iron Maiden" the second album was "Killers" is bad ass! and both albums are with some of Iron Maidens best songs with great lead guitar harmonies; they were part of the early 80's Heavy Metal Music British Invasion into the USA. Then in 82 when they replaced lead singer Paul Di Anno with Bruce Dickinson on the album "Number of the Beast" and the rest is Metal Music history! all the songs on all 3 albums are kick ass! you will not be disappointed enjoy Metal Lex!

You two should see iron maiden live, they are amazing I last saw them in 2010 and even as older men they have so much energy and stage presence.

I am glad you have done some early Iron Maiden. The lead singer for the first 2 albums, Iron Maiden and Killers was Paul Di'Anno. The early stuff sounds quite raw, in a good way. When Bruce Dickinson came in during the third album, they sounded more refined with their guitar solos. I would rank this song in my top 5 favourite Iron Maiden songs. There is not one bad song on this album either. You should try the songs Prowler or Iron Maiden next.

If the live stream got this played I say thank you very much!! Well done. The first 2 Maiden albums are incredible. Love Bruce but would have liked to have seen what Maiden would have been with Paul DiAnno. I guess it all worked out in the end for us Maiden fans! Lex you just "get" it.

The older prog punk rock Maiden 🎸. ✌ They had a different singer back then too.

I can still remember 40 years ago my best friend making me listen to this with giant headphones on after we smoked one. I had told him I didn't like Iron Maiden and he said you never heard them because they don't play it on the radio. He was right and I'm still a fan and he's still my best friend. Years later I turned him on to Pantera.

This is hands down my favorite Maiden song to play on the bass. If you do more of the early stuff with Di'Anno on vocals I HIGHLY recommend the track Remember Tomorrow.

Like you said, the song was released in the 1980 debut album "Iron Maiden", 6 years before Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical. The song is based on the 1910 eponymous French novel by Gaston Leroux, "The Phantom of the Opera" (French: Le Fantôme de l'Opéra).

As a trumpet player I'd teach myself bass lines from Maiden then play them on bass and trumpet in band class just to mess with our music director

Best damn metal band in the world!! The first two albums almost had a punk sound because that is what was going on in England at the time. Heavy metal was still in it's infancy.

@@lw3918 Hahaha, I understand. I'm also not much of a fan of that other guitarist that does all the weird hair metal guitar god poses. He seems somewhat harmless though. It seems generous of the other band members to cut him in on the deal as I don't see he really adds much. Maybe he was down on his luck? I was out of metal altogether by the time that other thing happened as I segued into a long strange trip with the Grateful Dead.

I love Paul Di'Anno's voice so much! Alot of people will try to compare Paul and Bruce, and to be honest, you cant. Di'Anno era Maiden and Dickinson era Maiden are two completely different styles of music and sounds. I will say I prefer Di'anno era Maiden more, but that doesn't mean Dickinson isn't an amazing singer, because he is. Maiden's Piece of Mind album is right up there with my favorites of all time.

I wonder if Paul can still sing. It would be cool for them to have a little reunion and do some of there old stuff. I guess the band probably has no desire for that since they got so mega large with Bruce. I think it would be intresting to see though. Would be funny to see him try some Bruce era songs too. I just like both singers even though they are both very different.

I started with Number of the Beast and went backwards from there so I like both sounds. I was proud to be a Paul fan as many in the US didn't even know about him since it was Bruce that launched them into more popularity. But their first US tour with Bruce was far from stadiums. I saw them is a relatively small venue, about 3000 or so capacity, opening for Scorpions on their Blackout tour. These were my mid teenage years, before metal became hair metal. I got to see a lot of great shows of that era.

For me, this is the best Maiden song and from the best album. I would say that though, this is my era, i saw them live before the album came out and bought it as soon as it did. One of the classics, raw, original and not over produced like some of the stuff after. My elder sisters, fiance got me into them. He was a massive very early Maiden fan, doing the pubs and clubs to watch them. Great guy, shame it never lasted with sis, lol.

Is the most progressive and it is a perfect progressive masterpiece. If it goes more progressive than this, then it's just Self-indulgence. That harris genius, he knew when to transition away. For me somewhere in time, is their greatest album.But the Difference between that album and this, just shows you that maiden is a real and proper journey from 1st to last album

Good review!! Growing up in 1960s-1970s, I was not much of an Iron Maiden fan, so really do not recall ever have hearing this song played before - though have heard of this song. I may/may not have listened to it before, just do not recall. However, always thought that Iron Maiden had some of the BEST album covers EVER!!!

Phantom of the Opera was a magnificent book. A great movie done many times. Long Chaney senior did his own makeup for the movie. Old Maiden first 2 albums had a different singer named Paul Dianno. It sounds different because of when it was made this song is well over 40 years old. This was considered heavy back then.

Holy shit! Good dive here. This was one of the first few albums I owned back in the early 80s.

Who's old enough to remember the Lucozade advert?

Not sure you guys have the drink Lucozade out in the States but back in the mid 80's the beginning of this song was used on an advert to sell the drink. At the time the advert was shown around 20 times a day on UK TV so it is a very well known song for most British people over the age of 45, even among those not in to Iron Maiden or rock music because of the advert.

Brad is getting there... sometimes, when you first hear a song, it really *is* a bit much... but as you listen a few times, more and more of the subtleties and nuances of the singing, instrumentation, and melodic structure get clearer and your appreciation grows! The same thing can happen with great movies, you notice more on each viewing which just makes it better!

I'm really wondering what kind of music Brad grew up on that he finds this too much to process. Heavy metal was played in my house by my brothers when I was a kid in the 80's. I grew up hearing all kinds of genres of music from different eras. To me, this is just a really good song with a nice flow. Even though I was into my 80's pop music, I never thought it was that complicated or complex. I thought Led Zeppelin was way more complex because they sounded so different.

I completely agree! Brad, you have come so so far from when I started watching this channel. At some time you will actually be able to tell the difference between real instruments played by real professionals and auto tune by basically anyone.

This was very early Iron Maiden, with the original singer Paul Di'Anno. I remember asking for this song over and over in a club I went to when I was in my teens. Thanks!

The "Phantom" in the novel and 1925 silent film adaption is not a ghost, but some creepy guy living in the basement of a Parisian opera house who develops a crush on one of the house's stars. Also, he likes to kill people. Definitely a darker dude than in the musical!

More live Maiden please! Anything from the Live After Death show is killer. Maybe Revelations, Running Free or 22 Acacia Avenue for songs that are a little deeper in the Maiden catalog.

Well said, man. Live After Death is an imperative album, every song is a hit by right.

Nice to see you checking out some different Maiden tunes than the usual ones everyone does. This was their first album, the guys were never happy with the production on this album, plus Bruce wasn’t in the band yet. A few other great “uncommon” tunes worth checking out: Revelations, Flight of Icarus or A Thin Line Between Love and Hate.

Yeah, Steve Harris always complains he didn't like the production, but thank god he didn't tinker with it at the time or realised too late to do so. Sometimes artists get a bit too far up there own 'you know what' to appreciate they made something great. It's originality and rawness were part of what made it so good. As an early fan who saw them live in this guise, i'm glad Mr Dickinson wasn't anywhere near it. I saw them many times live, the last at Donington Park 1992, but for me they were going down hill after Number of the Beast. I know most fans won't agree about the Bruce and the down hill bit, but that's fine, it's good we all have different tastes. I'm not slagging them off now (when you find yourself thinking, that from 1990 is now, you know your getting old, 😮), it's just not my thing.

@@snowblindoz that's cool, my first concert was Maiden on their Piece of Mind tour, so I'm not the biggest fan of their first two albums. To each their own. I've seen almost every tour since then except for a few of the "greatest hits" tours. For me, they were at their height during their Powerslave tour. Saw that show four nights in a row.

This is Maiden being a progressive metal band.

They are all about historic events which makes them even more bad ass

The musical be damned! The novel came out in 1909 and the film in 1925. I think the lyrics are symbolic of a woman's abusive love, but who knows, maybe it's about drugs. ;) Btw, you're trying to classify this, if it matters, it's called Proto Metal.

I remember playing this on repeat on my walkman in the school playfield back in the 80s.

The original version of phantom of the opera was an old black-and-white picture from the 1930s

When this was written the Phantom of the Opera was best known as an early horror movie staring Lon Chaney, the man of the 1000 faces. The musical was also based on the movie, or possibly the book that the movie is based on. Otherwise there is no link. But there is a heavy metal version of the musical, the Phantom of the Opera is the signature song of the band Nightwish (which you might have reacted to). But if you listen to it go with the live version with their original singer Tarja Turninen. The video from their last tour before she was kicked out of the band is one of the best symphonic metal videos out there This is very different from most Iron Maiden you will hear, which is not surprising since it has only two of the current band members, the bass player Steve Harris (who is the leader of Iron Maiden), and one of the lead guitarists Dave Murray. But this is the original singer rather than Bruce Dickenson who is the most identifiable person from the band.

Not so different in structure from later Maiden with Bruce. The long instrumental parts, tempo changes, twin lead guitars and Steve Harris' awesome bass...all the classic Maiden ingredients were there. Bruce of course much better and more technical voice. But I love Paul Di'Anno's vocals too. They were edgy and more aggressive sounding. Well, I lived through that era of the NWOBHM, in Britain, so of course the early Maiden albums always get my support.

I'm still hoping you will finally react to Queensryche live in Tokyo performing 'Take Hold of the Flame'. It's a song of hope with an incredible performance you really don't want to miss.

"Torture me back at your lair!" you missed in the end after the music ended. This is my favourite Iron Maiden album, you should check more of it, especially Remember tomorrow, Strange world and Transylvania.

That bass is just...so good. Harris is a beast
