Milkshakes! The good old reliable frozen drinkable treat, popular across the world but particularly so in America, where they were invented. So, after getting our hands on a selection of American-style milkshakes, we simply had to sit our resident Irish People down to see what they thought.

There’s a string of diners I remember from living in Portland, Oregon, called Shari’s. There’s a big case at the front with a huge selection of different pies. It’s one of their specialties. But several years ago they got the idea to make a pie shake. It’s a milkshake that they add a slice of pie to before they blend it. Maybe lots of place do this; I don’t know. But this is the only place I’ve seen a pie shake. It’s amazing because there are all kinds of flavors you wouldn’t think of and you also get flaky little bits of pie crust all through it.

There was a fancy diner just down the road from my college dorm that I made my parents take me to when they visited (couldn’t afford it on my own dime, that was for sure). They had the BEST milkshakes that they would make in those tall steel cups, and they would fill up the tall glass and also bring the steel cup with the leftover shake both to your table. You got every drop of that overflowing steel cup. Yummmmm! Strawberry is always my favorite, extra thick and with chunks of real strawberries jamming up the straw.
I’ve been to ice cream places where when you finally read through all the different flavors of milkshakes you’ve forgotten the ones on the list. Frank’s Diner in downtown Spokane WA makes a milkshake that looks like the ones you see in the movies.
But, but, but... We DO love Grainne...
The hard thing about 'American' milkshakes is that every place has their own way of doing it. Some are mind blowing and some are just meh. There is no ONE American style milkshake. The other problem is you get milkshakes that were made there in Ireland and called "American style" but they really aren't.
@FireMahoghany

While I agree on the no specific "American" milkshakes, I would say that typically a diner has a decent representation on the "classic American", specifically when they offer malted versions. However, one could definitely argue that many ice cream parlors have some of the best, since their focus is main ingredient. My preference, however, is those available at Stewarts Shoppes (regional, I know), because they source ice cream locally, and you can make ANY flavor into a milkshake

Anything that has chocolate in it , should have a chocolate base , Oreos, cookies, and cream ie chocolate milk . Mint chocolate chip ie chocolate milk etc. etc. the same should be applied with Malts , but with Malts you should always have extra Malt mix added into it , it just makes it taste that more better .
As an American, I have never seen a Kinder Bueno or Brownie milkshake... BUT blending candy or candy bars into a milkshake IS very much something we do here so I assume it's happened somewhere as I HAVE had a Baklava Milkshake AND several cupshakes (that's a milkshake with a cupcake blended into it - frosting and all) at a couple of local shops here.

Americans have preferred flavors too. There's a whole thing about our fondness for fruit-flavored candy, particularly citrus and apples. We're basically the only place that eats pecans or even remembers what they are, and a lot of other places don't like mint because they aren't used to it being in things that aren't toothpaste.

_I_ just about did, and I was just watching.
I spent at least 2 years (well, summers) slinging ice cream at a takeout place at one point. I used to love making shakes the most b/c of the possibilities. It was basically 5-7 scoops of ice cream (depending on the size & type of ice cream used) along with about 2/3 cup of whole milk, about 3 tablespoons of flavored syrup (we had vanilla, strawberry & chocolate, as well as unflavored simple syrup) then 3 minutes on the blender. There were recipes for specific, frequently-ordered ones, but I used to like making up my own. "Creamsicle" or "Super Split" - 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream, 3 scoops of orange sherbet, use orange juice instead of milk, and flavor with vanilla syrup Caramel Nut - 3 scoops of butter crunch ice cream, 2 scoops of vanilla almond fudge, milk, drizzle in hot caramel (from the sundae station) during blending.

I just realized that I had forgotten Gráinne's absolute desperation to get a cookies and cream milkshake.
I think a pairing of Graeme and CalleyAnn trying anything would be mind-blowing! So much energy!
I can’t remember if you ever did this on any of your channels, and even though I personally wouldn’t care for them, but I think you guys would go crazy for boozy milkshakes, especially if it had Bailey’s in it.😄 for examples: Bailey’s and strawberry, Bailey’s and Oreo, Bailey’s and chocolate. For Dermot, a red velvet milkshake made with Bailey’s red velvet, red velvet cake with cream cheese icing and vanilla ice cream. 😂 You could probably make several episodes just on Bailey’s milkshakes.
Thomas, I have got great news for you! A "concrete mixer" at Culvers is basically a milk shake made out of custard. It exists! Culvers is mostly a midwest USA chain, but there are hundreds of them.
Snorkling Grainne made me laugh and further cute hoody-ness kept me smiling. Good pairings and much fun to finish a funky week - thanks everyone! (Repost - evidently got vapourised earlier for some reason)
Heath or Snickers Blizzard from Dairy Queen, AMAZING!
I have no idea what a kinder bueno is, but I think I might need it in my life...even though milk messes my stomach up, I take the discomfort and frequent bathroom visits because a day without ice cream or especially a day without cheese, is a day wasted with just breathing.
