An Italian tries Southern BBQ for the first time!

Ойын-сауық

Our tour of good Southern food continues! It's time for my Italian husband, Alessio to try Southern BBQ at Puckett's. Of course we had to get him all the good stuff- brisket, pulled pork, bbq chicken, ribs, coleslaw, collard greens, baked beans, green beans, Mac & cheese, potato salad, mashed potatoes with gravy and cornbread! We also grabbed some pimento cheese bites, fried pickles, and wings for apps. Can we eat it all?!?
Thank you for all of your love and support! Don't forget to subscribe and turn on the bell so you never miss a new video! You can also follow us on our other socials below! Ciao for now! -Jessi and Alessio

I was a U.S. Marine at the American Embassy Rome, Italy for a year (1993-1994). One day I discovered an old BBQ pit hidden away. I pulled it out, cleaned it up and put it back into service. The Italians were blown away eating authentic BBQ with all the sides. Life was good 😊

Usually Italians are not disrespectful of any food and are very open minded, unless people don't try to alter Italian food claiming it is Italian. When food is good why not admit it and enjoy it?? For me it's like that at least. As an Italian whenever i go abroad i try every food before to judge or go to an Italian restaurant.

The first American pork BBQ was created when Spanish sailors met Native Americans at the mouth of the Savannah River that divides South Carolina and Georgia . The Spanish brought the hogs , and the Native Americans roasted them over coal fires like they cooked their wild game . At the time Spain claimed Georgia as part of their Spanish Florida territory . Texas BBQ comes from the Spanish that colonized Mexico and used Native Mexican cooking techniques to cook the cattle they introduced into the New World .

Southern food has it's roots in French, old UK and African cooking. Somehow...it all came together over a century or two and we have this gift. Glorious! :-) I had this experience first in Chicago, in a tough part of town where I felt like an outsider. Once I started raving about the food, it was like I was family. Since then I've had better BBQ, but THAT BBQ was still, at that time, the best food I ever ate except my grandma's cooking. I said so and everybody laughed. :-)

Yep, as a native Texan who's family competes in bbq competitions, I can definitely complement Puckett's. Only been there once, but it was great. I think they use a fruitwood in the pits and some amazing custom rubs, which gives a really unique flavor profile. Love Apple & Cherry smoked meat, BUT.. if you love brisket and ribs, I have to speak up for Texas BBQ, which is hard to beat ! But as a Tennessean now, so I can love them both. This was a great video, just watching Alessio's reaction lol!

Pitting BBQ spots in different Southern states against each other will just lead to another civil war 😂. Love fried pickles! The crunch, the flavor from the dill, and the ranch to counter it is a perfect balance. Fried pickles, believe it or not, originate in ARKANSAS! First created in the summer of 1963 by the late Bernell Austin who owned the Duchess Drive-in. Austin's son David Smith said, "He thought, well there's got to be a way to cash in on that pickle. Of course this is the south, where did it go? In the deep-fryer." Genius move. The idea was originally a gimmick to drum-up business for the drive-in that was located across the highway from the Atkins Pickle Company, but from there it just became a Southern staple once it got popular at festivals. Although the drive-in closed in the late 60s, you can still get the fried pickle made with the original recipe (only his family know the recipe) at the Picklefest held annually in Atkins, Arkansas!

It wasn't good for Canadian standards, it was properly good. The only thing that was a miss was the coleslaw. It was almost flavorless, which was a big step up from the places where the coleslaw was offensive tasting.

Love our BBQ in Texas, but to be 100% fair... we usually focus more on brisket here. I have had KC BBQ and some from the South (never tried white sauce though), and let me say that I am very proud and fortunate that BBQ is treated with such care and reverence in other southern states. Every bit I have tried has been fantastic and you can immediately tell the attention to detail these folks put in their food. I honestly don't have a particular favorite. Some people (regions) do ribs better, some do wings and chicken better, some do beef better, and some do pork better. I have never tried Hawaiian BBQ, but I hear they do fantastic pork too. That doesn't even include whole hog, which is another animal entirely (no pun intended). I am being 100% honest in saying BBQ is hands down the best food a person could eat in my opinion. Glad you guys enjoyed it, and just keep exploring. 👍
