Iraq Uncovered: Investigating Shia Militias’ Alleged Abuse of Sunni Civilians (full doc) | FRONTLINE

As ISIS was pushed out of areas of Iraq, FRONTLINE correspondent Ramita Navai made a dangerous and revealing journey to investigate allegations of abuse of Sunni Muslim civilians by powerful Shia militias. (Aired 2017)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate.
The Shia militias were a crucial part of Iraq’s fight against ISIS and were supposed to answer to the country’s prime minister. But “Iraq Uncovered” investigated how some of the groups were accused of kidnapping, torturing and even killing Sunni civilian men and boys, whom the militias often saw as ISIS suspects.
Navai traveled to areas of the country where few journalists went, talking to Sunnis who said their relatives were abducted and abused at the hands of the militias. She found a makeshift militia prison crammed with men the militia admitted had been held there for months without any charges. Navai found that people in refugee camps were “as scared of the militias as they are of ISIS,” and she spoke to leading Sunni and Shia politicians as well as militia members themselves.

Why doesn't PBS publish recent data about Afghanistan, how Sunni Taliban kill and mistreat Shias in Afghanistan (cp. my channel), and in Bahrain and Saudi-Arabia, U.S. allies, where Shias are oppressed. And in Palestine, how Sunnis get killed by U.S. weapons? Because it's all U.S. propaganda.

US state-run propaganda. How can it be journalism? Shias treated Sunnis badly (that's why they publish it in their news) and Sunnis treated Shia badly (that's why Saddam was bombed by USA). But what is not covered, is that both Shia and Sunni, were killed by USA. Why doesn't PBS publish recent data about Afghanistan, how Sunni Taliban kill and mistreat Shias in Afghanistan (cp. my channel), and in Bahrain, where Shias are oppressed. And in Palestine, how Sunnis get killed by U.S. weapons? Because it's all U.S. propaganda.

I think this piece is missing the absolute brutality of ISIS (Sunni) that was perpetrated on the Shia. Shia mosques were attacked at prayer, Shia markets bombed, Shia murdered left and right. This became a blood feud. Lots of innocent people were swept up on both sides. This is why strong rule of law and professional law enforcement is vital to any society.

I am from Diyala Al muqdadiya but now we live in Germany. Firstly i thank you for this doku and may god portect you where ever you are, you shows the people in out side of Iraq how is bad the situation there. Because the majority could not illustrate savagery there and thay thought we exaggerate when we talk about the brutality of the regime in Diyala/Al Muqdadya. i was kidnaped by militias when i was at beginning of 15th year. They kidnaped my 2 uncels after that and killed them even though we payed 250 000 $ and 2 kilo gold. When i was 14 i saw with my eyes how militias of badr killed two persons near the police, and the police did not do any thing. They let peopel free from the prison and killed them in the out side of the prison because they could not killed them in the prison so that no one say that they ( The regime ) kill prisoners in prison and act against human rights. May God have mercy on my uncles where ever they are.

Shias were never really relevant in Islamic history, sadly they’re known for this bloodshed against Sunnis, and disrespecting the prophet Muhammad wives and friends If you ever wondered why people in Iran are not religious at all it’s because they follow this cult. @henryjackson370 I was thinking the same way you're thinking. Channels like these are very suspicious. Why didn't they investigate the crimes of ISIS which are far worse vis-a-vis the Shia community by bombing multiple times their mosques, markets etc? It is really a lie when she said that the Shia militias were committing these atrocities when the west was busy fighting ISIS. In actual fact we have the Shia militias to thank for defeating ISIS who looked set to expand their mindless terror to other parts of the world including to Europe. Don't forget that they started an armed rebellion in Marawi in the Philippines which lasted for about 3 weeks about 10 years ago. All the while, the US army showed their meaningless "fights" against ISIS by showing some meaningless bombings of ISIS "hideous" etc that would not secure a victory against ISIS when actually it was these Shia militias that were fighting ISIS on the ground and sacrificing thousands of fighters in the process (and the Hezbollah was taking on ISIS and defeated them in Syria at the same time). ISIS also had always worked for the US, UK and Israeli interest, and hence the rebellion against President Bashar Al Asad (an Israeli foe), many bombings in Iran (a US and Israeli foe) and the recent massacre they perpetrated at Crocus hall in Russia (a stretegic foe of the US) while at the same time never firing a single bullet at the US, UK or Israel. Lastly, that look of concern (for the supposedly oppressed Sunnis) on the face of the presenter of the documentary looks so fake and actually there are no enmity between Sunnis and Shias except when there's a portion of them who got influenced by the propaganda of imperial powers such as the US to divide them, make them fight each other and try to rule over them to steal more of their nations' wealth.

Let's be reasonable. These militias are focused on saving civilians from ISIS. That's heroic. In the meantime they try to pick out the ISIS fighters from these big groups. They don't murder indiscriminately. They try to find the fighters and bring them to court. That's extremely careful and civil, considering they have seen gruesome actions from ISIS. Maybe there have been made mistakes, but that's not their goal. They are extremely civil considering the harm that ISIS did.

You must hold America and its coalition accountable, which destroyed Iraq and took lives. More than 500 thousand Iraqi children. America and 34 European countries fought Iraq, destroyed it, and returned it to the Stone Age after it had been the greatest country in the Middle East.

The perpetuation of horror...incomprehensible to those not yet affected by such life traumas... What would you do if this was you... Peace is a short...not particularly extravagant...five letter word... The power it has could be monumental... And yet... 🇿🇦

I don't know what to make of this since Sunnis and Wahhabi Muslims have been fighting and killing Shiite Muslims ever since there's been that separation and in Iraq, the Sunni minority under Saddam Hussein was brutal to the Shiite population. I mean really it's Sunni and Wahhabi that historically have done the most killing, and are the people who create and carry out global terrorism. Shiites have tended to stay away from global terrorism but certainly have militant groups IN that region, not around the world. So, same same? The Sunni leader before the US invaded Iraq and deposed of him used chemical weapons to kill thousands of people, both Shiite Iranians and Kurds in northern Iraq. There's no love there in Iraq between these groups and if Turkey weren't so hateful towards Kurds it would probably be better to break up Iraq into 3 countries. It's not like there' a historical contest for that country. It was artificial lines made by the UK.

Ugh, you are simplifying the story a lot. The biggest problem is the violent foreign policy of the USA, overthrowing governments, which although dictatorships they brought regional stability, peace and a basis for future development. In Europe, Spain and Portugal had dictatorships similar to those of Saddam Hussein (Franco en Salazar), but they were not overthrown violently and traumatically by foreign powers, in this way they were able to slowly but decisively transition to a future of peace, prosperity and freedom for their citizens. Countries need time and space to develop... Now Europe, which has the Middle East as its backyard, is suffering the consequences of this disaster, receiving thousands of Iraqi, Syrian and Afghan refugees (soon also Palestinians and maybe even Iranians and Yemenis due to the usa and it's wars in the región).....

Most of the killings of Sunnis have been done by Shia and forcefully converted them to shia practices.the killings by abbasids and eliminating majority Sunnis from iran by force are clear examples. Even today in iran Sunnis are on the paraphries of the country, where they escaped for safety against persecution of shia. Go to the north, south, east or west of the country you will find Sunnis, while they are haunted, persecuted and not allowed to pray and freely preach, othewise the Iranian will know the facts of their beliefs. Shias do not stay away from terrorism rather follow terrorism agaist Sunnis with the support of America and the Christian world otherwise they will not allow shia iran for one day on the world map. It is because shia dont belive in freedom fighting or resistance to crusaders and therefore stay away from supporting freedom fighting of muslims in Palestine , kashmir, Afghanistan or iraq. For shia mullahs Sunnis are non muslims and they even preach against the marriage with Sunnis unless converted to their faith. Shia mullah also doesn't allow their followers any teachings from Sunnis to keep them ignorant of the true teachings of the holy prophet pbuh. the ordinary shia is however a sincere follower of the faith but misguided by their mullah. The mullah called waez use occasions like Aushora to keep his followers in the same line and pollute the innocent minds with his ideology. He portrays sunnis as useruppers of khilafat and responsible for the Karbala tragedy to keep them to their beliefs . Before the US invasion of Iraq, on false pretext, Iraq was not ruled by sunni alone rather majority government was shias and also contained Christians. It was a secular stat under Baas Socialist Party, whose founder was a Christian, named Michael Aflack. The same was and is in Syria. These were to contain any Muslim uprising against the colonials and many more such leaderships were installed to crush any possible uprising. Others were controlled using the tool of religion.

For your information wahabism did not exist historically till the dismemberment of the Ottoman empire when they were introduced officially to devide Muslims. They are equated by enemies to Sunnis as a propaganda tool because the latter participated in Afghan freedom fighting against former USSR.

@@polunga7989 LOL, why are you always trying to draw parallels with the west. Muslims have dictators because if they don't have dictators they would elect the Muslim brotherhood, the reason overthrowing sadaam was so bad was because if you acted crazy and support isis he would kill your entire family. Same with Assad, we saw how as soon assad started to lose territory all the chiristans and the yezidis were killed.
