This made me very happy to hear! I am a student at a low “semi target” and love it there, but also received one of those guaranteed transfers to a target school and turned it down. I’ve got to say it’s been hard on me seeing all of these people on the internet saying it’s ivy or nothing, and target school or don’t even try. Despite some doubts and worries I’ve been having since researching finance jobs more, this video’s message makes me feel like I’ll ultimately benefit from the hard work I’m putting in to college at my current institution :) thank you for the helpful advice and encouragement!!

Thanks for this Bryan, it really helps affirm what I knew and puts my mind at ease. I think to add on, this should apply to breaking into major asset / wealth management firms too. The amount of effort you'd need to put into networking is tremendous, let alone refine the "technical skills" needed. The reality hits you hard by the time you get to little over 50 rejections. All the best to anyone out there looking to break into these areas.

There are guys who have channels basically saying “buy my course I’ll help nontargets get jobs” or some bullshit. You see a similar thing popping up for FAANG companies (I’m in tech). Respect for giving the cold hard truth.

is finance a stem course? if not is it worth it for international students to come to the USA and study finance? courses to do for investment banking ? and requirements that schools see in a student to select? best country to study finance and ending up having a good career?

Companies regularly come to my school for recruiting but most students who finish our banking programs end up studying in other areas while they are working in their first 2-3. I always wonder why this is cause every year we have someone who is a local big name in banking that says everyone from this school is awesome or something like that, so I wonder why that is.

I think tech IB is booming and will continue to boom - completely personal opinion

I went to a really great school, consistently ranking in the top 5% of business school aptitude tests for the MBA benchmark, but because it is so affordable compared to the Ivy Leagues World News was not interested in ranking it. So I totally see what you mean now; I was oblivious this culture even existed until I visited New York for the Quinnipaic GAME forum. That was an eye opener, it almost felt like Grad School racism LOL There's no other way to explain it haha

That sounds like pure classism. A degree itself is a privilege in this country and I believe education should be accessible to everyone just like many countries in Europe.

What was your major in college and I know you said that being proficient in Excel is a must in IB but do you also have to be good at any type of Math like calculus or statistics, and do you have to be great at punctuation and grammar as well? And has your career in IB taught you to be a good investor or find new investing techniques?

I studied accounting / business - I would not say you need any complex math to be good in IB specifically but any level of math is helpful for any job nowadays in my opinion. Definitely helps in an "investor" perspective in terms of undersatnding the market a little more

Summary: -It’s not necessarily a negative to attend a non-target school, instead a lot more challenging to break into the IB industry -However, a plus is that if you do manage to break in it suggests you put a lot of hard work in and show tenacity hence long term you’ll benefit more as you’ve proven to go beyond the limits Also thanks bryan❗️keep them coming

The work life balance definitely is rough... I'd say it's all about maximizing every free minute you have of your life (for me it's making youtube / calling friends etc) and also planning longer term goals. Also reality is for most people IB is not a lifelong career, so there's a light at the end of the tunnel

Could you transfer to one of these schools for the last 1 or 2 years of college to gain an advantage while minimizing overall college cost?

it is growing at the same rate as the average job. It's not like software engineering where the growth is astronomical. But even if IB goes south, there are still a lot of exit options if you get into a bulge bracket bank or even some tier 2s and 3s.

I just got into high school and in my 10th grade my marks were not the greatest and im scared due to this mark i wont be able to go to top colleges and full fill my dream of becoming an investment banker any advice whould be grateful. It's not like I just want to do investment banking due to the pay but the whole finance industry brings me joy and I believe it's perfect for me (late realization)

Let me know your thoughts about british business schools and on-line programms like global MBAs. For many professionals is just not easy to quit and go to Wharton for one year in order to get a Msc degree. I have on mind a MSc in Finance at University of Manchester (on-line). How do you see this?

I think it really depends especially considering some non-target schools might be "better" schools than target

What do you mean by target school? Not everyone lives in the U.S., nor can go there. If I'm going to a top business school in my country (Spain), that already has a harsh entry, does that counts as a target? All the big investment banks come to my school, JPM, GS, MS, Citi, Barclays, etc... So I obviously have a chance. 65% of the Clubs are finance-related. But still, I want to work either in London, NYC, or HK in IB. I'm also applying to LSE, Warwick, and Kings in the UK. Wish me luck. I saw that J.P Morgan COO went to a random Argentinian university, so everyone can do it, folks.

Most firms I know of either have a GPA cut off have a 3.3 or a 3.5 "cut-off" but I've also seen exceptions made to this

Would you say Ohio state is like a semi target school? The finance program ranks 11th in the country on US News but it obviously isn’t on the same level as some of the clear target schools.

I'd say difficult in the sense that the barrier to entry is hard in a getting to the interviews sense but the prep anyone can do

It's easier than if you were to go to a non-target or a semi-target, but you still have to prep and network hard to get a shot. If you start prepping for interviews early (like start reading guides and joining relevant clubs in your freshman year) and keep up the momentum you should be able to land a BB position in NYC from a top target.

Is Northeastern University a target or, at least, a semi target? Because, I’ve realized that there are people on LinkedIn who have gone to NEU, and they’re working at some of the top Wall Street firms such as Goldman Sachs and so on.
