    I can’t remember if I used a 3 or 6 stop. The modifier was used to block the Sun on some and then moved on others. You can also see how much the light is controlled in the raw files

    @@BrandonColePhotography i love your work, but you can CLEARLY see the softbox's shadow being cast in front of the model, no where near over the model. You're still getting great images obviously because you're lighting your model with plenty of soft light. Here's a prime example of shading your model with your modifier. kzread.info/dash/bejne/laKLkrmJds7LhZM.html

    @@charminbaer2323nderstand you might not see the entire softbox cover her body. I don’t need too. I only care about the face area. When you can mix ambient and flash PROPERLY images turn out like that. Lol I don’t understand why you so hung up on what is shaded and what’s not. It’s about advice , helping others and creating banging images. As long as that is achieved I did my job.

    @@BrandonColePhotography “I’m hung up” on something because you’re saying you’re doing one thing, but you’re clearly not. You’re not shading even the face, which is ok, because the flash is doing it’s job. I’m just giving some constructive criticism here, not here to talk trash. Any other photographers care to chime in will say the same. I mean, you even have the flash on the same side as the sun and you even admit that.

  • @JEDINITE30

    @JEDINITE30

    In this example, the softbox wasn't shading her face at all, it was shading her lower body. The shadow cast by the softbox is where the shade is at and it is on her legs; and in some shots it was directly on the sand and missing her completely. The angle of the softbox to the subject must match the angle of the sun to shade her face. In this case the softbox angle didn't match. The softbox was too low and the sun was too high, so the sun could still "see" her. We are not blind and video doesn't play tricks in that regard. The only thing video can fool you on is dynamic range because cameras have less of it compared to our eyes (not where the shadows are falling). The shots were still nice because of the under-exposure of the camera, which still lowered the light shinning on her face from the sun, low enough, to not register in camera as much. The technique in question requires full shade cast by the softbox to completely block out the sun. So essentially, you are cutting bad light and adding good light. Light is additive, so some of the light in the images was coming from the lower exposed sun, mixed with the light from the softbox. That is why she still had a hotspot close to the top of her forehead. Still, great images though.

    Bad advice? So your saying me as a professional photographer. Regardless if the softbox shaded or not at some points in the video, the information I gave, the tips in shooting off camera flash in midday sun is bad advice? If something doesn’t happen or if “seems” not to happen in the little time content creators put these videos together for photographers who are learning doesn’t mean it’s bad advice. Let’s stop going after people. You are more then welcome to find a beach, get a model and let’s see you create in mid day sub with nothing to hide from.. and post the raws. Id love to see your work

    @@BrandonColePhotography Your are right: the adice to shade to model with the softbox is valid and helpful. And I use this technique quite often. My only complain is, that in this video you did not follow this technique and the video and the pictures do not demostrate this technique. The viewer is to some extent mislead between your pictured and a proper application of this technique. I am worried about you emphasing being a professional. Being a good photograoher often in not related to having the need to earn money. Often times this even is a contradion. And even being a good photography educator is not related to being be good photographer. In your video you could be have mentioned that the technique of shaing the model has not been perfected executed in this single instance. A shooting is rarely perfect in all regards. At least my shootings. However being hoenst is good idea. And a suggestion: As is said I use this technique quite often. However I often have the issure that the edge of shade can be seen in frame. I found some techniques to hide the shadow by means of foreground grass oder by a low perspective. I would have been nice to your see your approach.

Since I dont show you the entire 1 1/2 hours of the photoshoot, I can see how some images may appear that the model may not be in the shade. However that does not make the actual video and message unusable. In the future I'll ensure I hit on those issues more clearer. I appreciate your comment.

    using your modifier to shade a subject is a common practice, especially if you don't have assistance and without a big scrim. we talk about ND filters like they are new. they've been around for years and if you're caught out there once: it won't happen again I can tell you that. They're other professions that don't care about using ND's because they want to avoid color casting/unnecessary editing and they surely don't care about flash power. but hey I get it. just another solution to a problem you face based on your shooting conditions...

    Hey, Brandon. Not trying to be the bearer of bad news, but you are setting yourself up for unnecessary criticism. Shade is shade. Whatever that shade is blocking, it's going to reflect that on The ground. So if you have two shadows on the ground. One Of the Modifier and one of the model. That says your modifier. Is not shading your model.

You can’t criticize good work. and when you shoot on a BEACH, In the sun as bright and as high as it is, trust me, seeing a shadow is barely visible. I don’t think it matters seeing a shadow or not. What’s important is the information being put out so people can learn how to shoot in situations like this.
