Introduction to Finnish Mythology - Animated
#finnishmythology #finnishgods
Finnish mythology is fascinating yet relatively unknown. With gods like Väinämöinen, Ilmarinen, Ukko, Perkele and creatures from Iku-Turso and Näkki to trolls and elves, it has influenced Lord of the Rings and countless metal bands. This video, using hand drawn animated illustration, covers the basics of our mythology and legends.

So many ppl in Finland thinks Perkele = devil, been trying to tell them it's not the devil it's the thunder but they just laugh at me. Also fun thing, I have heard that during the war between Finland and the Soviet Union. @@Winland88 Going even further, Satan himself didn't even exist in the original beliefs of Judaism and Christianity but was an embellishment made up in the middle ages. The term "satan" in the original Hebrew texts apparently meant "adversary" and was an angel tasked to "oppose" Yahweh's ideas so he could see if they were good or not, giving a second opinion so to speak. It's quite funny and interesting how mythology keeps evolving like this, so who is to say the modern interpretation of Perkele is any less valid compared to the origins.

The dominating god of a religion that was then subdued by christianity would be degraded to an evil god - Satan. That is clearly the case here with Perkele.
Good to note that the first version of Kalevala was a lot more "pure" collection of poems and folklore, whereas the new Kalevala is, like you said, edited by the author to make up a sensible story.

Oh boy... You witnessed his powers first hand.
Despite having no Finnish blood, nor any Scandinavian generally, I found a fascination with Finland that began with an unexpected delve into metal music during high school (Insomnium, Ensiferum, some of Amorphis). From what I could gather from interviews, online claims, lyrics and renditions of melodies stemming primarily from these artists, I decided to read the Kalevala in the form of the available compilation of Lonnort and translation by Bosley. I will not pretend to have understood all of it, perhaps not even most of it. I was a bit pressed for time when I decided to read it during my senior year, so I actually made it into an assignment for my English class. That assignment was originally supposed to be chosen from a specific list of approved books. I think the only reason I was allowed to deviate was that the Kalevala was a very impressive choice with a deep history. That was roughly 12 years ago. I still remember a bit of of it. I didn't fully realize that my copy was a selective compilation of countless stories over countless years, let alone a perhaps inherently flawed translation. Subscribed now. I look forward to your content and to see if I can begin the appreciate the Kalevala to a further extent.

@@Anttimation I recall a past English teacher describing me as "eccentric". I think I must have taken that to heart and stopped caring too much, at least for the rest of high school and some of college, about so-called correct responses to things. I don't know if it was outright courage to chose the Kalevala; it might have simply been me saying that I'm picking this and the teacher being too curious (or maybe resigned) to make me opt for something I apparently didn't care about. I'm afraid I do not remember all of the assignment so I can only be vague in what I think I actually did. There were a couple things about the assignment. First was an in-class writing prompt, for which I briefly told of Kullervo who struggled to do anything well, never truly received much in life, sought revenge for his ails, and ultimately died by his own hand. Next was a short paper, for which I think I focused on "The Golden Bride" (Chapter 37 - I'm flipping through my copy here for name spelling), as pursued by Ilmarinen. If I remember right, Ilmarinen sought a new wife after Kullervo in prior chapters set up his then wife's death. No matter how precious, gold and silver do not forge living and loving beings. Final few lines, spoken by Vainamoinen, "Don't woo a woman of gold Or work on one of silver For the gleam of gold is cold And silver's glitter is chill", evidently prompted me to write a little note at the end, "Never have more true unspoken words been hidden beneath the true lie of our values, emotions, and thoughts" (I'm not entirely sure what the hell I meant there now). Last was an individual oral presentation with the teacher, I think just elaborating on writing prompt and paper. Forgive me if I've gotten some things wrong. This is as best as I can remember right now. Just tried to be as thorough as I can with editing.

Perkele, Piru and Ukko are the same thing. Perkele name only appears a few times too in ancient runos, and in more modern runos with often other Christian characters. I think it was Christian missionaries and priests that introduced the names Perkele and Piru in Finland, because Christianity came from Novgorod to Finland, and these priests knew pagan Russian god Perun and Balts' Percunis and Perkons. They realized Ukko was the same god, and demonized Ukko, In Finnish speakers' mouth the names Perun became Piru, Percunis and Perkons became Perkele. Another possibilty is that Perkele/Piru were sacred hidden names, and they weren't used in runos: instead Ukko was used. But I think this is less likely than the first explanation. Perkele and Piru have a very Christian connection. You can check Perkele in Wikipedia, he is connected to the same indoeuropean Perkwunos god, that all these European thunder and sky gods are versions of, a smith god who wields hammer and axe and casts lightning and whose holy tree is oak (because oak and lightning have a connected word root). That is also the description of Ukko.
@Anttimation

2 жыл бұрын
Why do you say Ukko was demonised? There's no trace of such demonisation to be seen, whereas most Finns don't even know Perkele was once something else than what he now is, after the Christian missionaries were done with him. It would seem more logical that Perkele/Piru already were entities known in Finland in some form, but due to what had been done to them already in the South (Baltic region), they were turned into the devil also here. However, who can say what happened with Ukko? It would be easy to say the church tried to trivialise him or maybe make him the Christian God's alias, but in the latter case, it wouldn't have lasted, probably on purpose. Trivialisation most definitely did happen, seeing how "ukko" now means nothing but an old man. If Ukko was demonised, it would now be an offensive word. Calling someone "ukko" will only count as an insult if the target is looking for a reason to be insulted. Little demonisation there. But try to say someone is perkele or piru himself. You'd definitely find trouble.

Finns generally did not use the actual name of the god. Perun, Percunis and Perkons are millenias old names, the name comes from Bronze Age. Why do they appear only in Christian era runos (edit: in their Finnish form Piru/Perkele)? My guess is because they were used by Christian priests/monks.

@@herrakaarme Maybe Piru and Perkele in runos appear in Christian era, because using the name of god was no more a tabu. Tursas/Turisas or Iki-Turso/Iku-Turso wasn't a war god. I've searched the ancient Finnish runos database and the names only appear a handful times and either as a sea monster or a name of a person. If it really was a god, there would be hundreds of times, there would be prayers and spells. Kristfried Ganander who in Mythologica Fennica claimed he/it was a god, cllected runos himself, and in one of his collected runo the name appears... as a sea monster, with nothing to hint it would be god.

@@Anttimation sike (probably from the word "psych"), is slang in the US, you say it when you wanna take something you previously said back. sometimes it's used when you've said something nice to someone, but wanna take it back just to be rude and make fun of them, but it's almost never really used seriously. sorry for the confusion 😅

However, the Perkele is not a Finnish god. This was a modern theory originally made by some anonymous amateur historian at some online forum. And this amateur historian put forward that Ukko was originally Perkele because Finns use the word Perkele often and a lot. But no one actual scholar has supported this theory and it has since been called pseudoscience. The Perkele doesn't appear in the tradition, folklore and written sources as a god but as a troll-like or demon-like mischievous creature and is synonymous with Piru. And this is also the case in all Balto-Finnic languages. Mainly they are either evil creatures or some wicked place. According to Ulla-Maija Forsberg, professor of Fenno-Ugric studies, these related words that corresponding to the Finnish word Perkele are, for example, the Estonian Põrgu (hell), Votic Põrku (death), and the Karelian Perkeleh (evil spirit).

@@Anttimation It can sometimes be encountered, especially if you surf the internet. This theory first appeared on the old Sinikivi online forum about 10 or 12 years ago. After that, the theory became popular, but as I said, no one actual scholar support it. They have more information and are more knowledgeable about these topics than anonymous forum users. And that is why we also should read academic papers and books.
