I saw this lecture in my first semester of ChemE in 2007... today I am a product development and process engineer for a flexible packaging company 😉 this lecture convinced me I was in the right engineering specialty.. and somehow youtube recommended this to me today.. warms my heart ❤

@@alensabu5484 yes, but your getting ahead of yourself, I'd say make sure you are good at math in general, get your algebra in good shape for what you will face in college courses for chemical engineering, if you could have a good understanding of pre calculus that is a big plus, it's the most important foundation and with that you'll get a good grasp of physics, chemistry, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, etc. again, make sure to have your math and algebra skills in check first

@@joeking3688 I just got a bachelor's degree back then, I don't really know if I have what it takes to pursue a PhD really, especially in chemical engineering, a PhD way more in depth than in an undergraduate degree and I don't know that I wanted to undergo that much stress again. currently I'm thinking of pursuing a masters degree, in materials engineering because that is mostly what applies to my job nowadays, that would help me more understand the characteristics of materials and how they behave under different conditions, specially polimers

yeah 20$ sounds like a lot especially when you know how much tuition fees are, you'd think they could cover that... but as others have said, I'm sure buying books is common practice and they can be way more expensive, and it's the US we're talking about...

Stanford has done a great thing in bringing a pioneering professor full of wisdom ,humility and fun to listen to introduce with telling facts about what is chemical engineering instead of a young and inexperience TA.
Had a great professor like this my first semester at University of Florida. Dr Gerald Westermann-Clark. Was a fantastic educator and we were fortunate to have him as our first experience in solving chemical engineering problems.
From the book "Bad Blood" by John Carreyrou Channing Robertson “maintained that (Elizabeth ) Holmes was a once-in-a-generation genius, comparing her to Newton, Einstein, Mozart, and Leonardo da Vinci.”
Down to earth Professor! Not even my major but had my full attention.

It sounds like Professor Robertson is very serious about chemical engineering being a "rough course," as I know it was for even some of THE most capable people in the College of Engineering at my own state school alma mater. But here is the thing that impressed me: he said that probably at least SOME of the TA's did NOT pass his course the first time around, so they just dug right in and took it again and DID pass it! I really admire such persistence. We NEED that in the fields Stanford has!
I don't get why just few people has the privilege in this vast world, of receiving such a wonderful lectures ...

Thank you. So many new words. Must rewatch!
I am, for so many years back, an industrial chemistry graduate, that is quite similar or even more profound in chemical processing than the chemicalE course. I found this introductory lecture very good and informative. I also found the courses very similar to each other. I may conclude that ChE will be an IndCh course plus some design courses. what would u say?
I just finished my junior year of chem'e and argh! For my transport phenomena class: open book tests, 5 hours to finish them... and still nobody would get a grade higher than a 90 I mean, there's a reason why they have such high salaries, it's a lot of work as a student

@LuisaIslas
3 жыл бұрын
@@teukurhazes3254 If you're solely doing it for the salary, then I'd suggest you switch majors, as the courses can be quite challenging. If you do well, I had friends who went straight into industry with starting salaries between 50,000 to 80,000 and they are all doing very well. No one from my class struggled to get employment after graduation. Chem'E can also open doors to pursue a PhD, med school, or law school; and the courses overlap with other science majors, so you can easily do a double major in chemistry or physics, or completely switch to those majors early on. Hope that helps! I went on to pursue a PhD in materials science and now work as a research scientist for a chemicals company.

@@LuisaIslas thats actually very helpful thank you! I took chemE cuz i enjoy chemistry a lot in highschool, but I do hear from a lot of people that chemE is mostly physics with some chemistry in it which kinda worries me a little, but i still prefer physics and chem heavy over bio so ill take it. And if I falter mid semester or sth I just gotta remind myself that its all gonna be worth it haha. Thanks again!

You most surely can go into a job to do with outer space. If that's your thing I would say to pursue it and see certain jobs that appeal to you more than others and stick with the ones that you have fun studying. And as long as you like what you're learning and know you need it for what you want to study then I don't see something as "I'm not that good at math and science'" as something that should stop you from studying what you want to learn !!!!
