One thing I would like to know is how an Islamic state was actually structured, as opposed to the modern Westphalian nation state. Probably shown with diagrams and stuff or drawn on a board.

There is a lot written on religious toleration with regard to monotheists. However, there is little discussion of polytheists which seem to have less protection... although I recall that a few Sufis had ideas which would encourage some toleration - it really isn't that discussed. I'd love to hear more about any jurists or Islamic philosophers who present any basis for toleration. This is an important topic for various Indigenous religions in different parts of the world which could be interpreted (rightly or wrongly) as non-monotheistic.

@@jelumbard I am scholar myself but of Near Eastern history and Geopolitics - But I love how you said there will be another Abu Hamid al-Ghazali video in the future - because the pun here is that there will never be another al-ghazali - The man was a mastermind who was far from a deviant like many of the modern day salafists like to believe - For example, his tahafut falasifah is not even his best work, but the way he set that up with the maqasid (though yes he was younger when he wrote that) but to see how he essentially said in the tahafut the ol’ “okay your muslim, but wont accept scripture when it clashed with your ideals of of logic ?…. okay, okay, ill leave scripture alone and ill beat you at your own game”, and that he did - and did it in such a fantastic novel way, it was like reading a polemic debate … I respect ibn Rushd very much so, but his rebuttal was so all over the place and never met the crux of ghazalis main arguments But from ihya ulum ad-deen to the Iqtisād, and so on and on - I have so many of ghazalis works - He not only stood up for Islam but showed how one can venture into these other sciences without becoming heretical - speaking of the iqtisãd, the modern day najdi dawah movement (who has a historian, I can tell they have no clue that al-Wahhab actually did to fellow Muslims) but anyways, they in the last year have been getting heavy into the kalam cosmological argument and I dont even think they realize that sina, but ESPECIALLY ghazali, is the reason that such an extraordinary argument for the existence of Allah (the necessary being) is out there - because many of them call him a “deviant” and “heretical” ….. simply because of tasawwuf and his reasonable understanding of using tasawwuf for the pillar of ihsan - is honorary title was well deserved great stuff, keep it up PS - i just realized this is old - so you may not see it - but this is the first video I came across on your channel !

Greetings Dr Lumbard I would like to hear more about the Gender relations of Islam. How does Islam see Women and Men? Are they spiritually equal but corporeally unequal according to Islam? what is the status of Women in Islam? During the discussion on this, I specifically look forward to hearing from you the following points, A) Guardianship of men Over women in Islam - Both in general terms and in financial terms B)The relevance of verse 34 in chapter 4 in the modern context C) The inheritance laws of women according to Sharia - what was the opinion of the ulema past and present of Chapter 4 Verse 11 in the Quran D) Sharia on women acquiring leadership positions. Has Islam historically discouraged women from occupying political/ juridical positions?

thanks in advance for your effort. I'm wondering if there are plenty of scholars, books, scientific and philosophical issues that have been lost through history because of many situations like, the burning of Baghdad and Cordoba libraries, and the crusader invading of Levant and Spain and Monglis one of the east side of the Islamic empire?? In addition to the inner Islamic conflicts within the Islamic borders ... and so on and so forth.

  • @jelumbard

There are many books that have been lost. Bit one aspect of Islam having such an extensive book culture is that many manuscripts are found throughout the Islamic world. So most manuscripts destroyed in the Mongol invasion for example, had copies in other places. Nonetheless, many books have been lost over time.
