Introducing BuildPicker - A Dynamic PC Build Configurator (& We Need Your Help!)

Ғылым және технология

Check out BuildPicker - buildpicker.com/
We've built a tool to take the pain out of picking PC parts. It's a dynamic PC build configurator, that uses curated build formulas to find the best parts for your next PC. We've assessed and graded PC parts and it uses this information to filter and select parts based on purpose and budget of the PC.
We're looking for your help to try it out and suggest improvements, so leave us a comment below telling what you like and how we could make it better!
How it works:
1. Parts are assessed and graded into tiers. Amongst tiers, parts are equivalent. These tiers are used to form builds. We only recommend parts we trust and would use ourselves.
2. A build formula is defined for every build. The formula picks parts from those tiers and creates the PC build. Every formula is unique depending on the use & budget.
3. Find tuning for every builder with upgrade & downgrade pathways for parts - allowing you to modify the PC build to your specific needs.
4. Pricing is checked daily and this refreshes the builds with current parts and pricing. This means the build is always selected with the best value-to-performance and in-stock parts, every day.

Used the PC Builder, it picked the same CPU and Motherboard that was already my top candidate - instantly upped my confidence for this new build. Thanks!

I've seen this concept on some SI build sites, but it's nice to see it carried over to a DIY setting. I have a couple of suggestions. The monitor option for Flight Sim 2020 is overkill at 144Hz. Sims like that are more about visuals than high refresh rates, and a steady 60 FPS on ultra settings is still considered a Holy Grail of sorts for most users. When surpassing about 40 fps, I think that's when users start increasing their graphics settings, and very few get reliably over 60 fps without killing the resolution or details. An IPS panel at 60-90Hz would be preferable over a VA panel at 144Hz for this sim. A feature request would be a build upgrader. This is more of a long term idea (I'm sure you don't have enough data to implement right now), but an option to input your existing specs, then pick your desired usage. The site would then give feedback on what your first, and possibly second upgrade should be to get the most bang for your buck, or show what your existing bottleneck might be. For example, if what you want would be a big jump in performance, it would flag that to let you know your first upgrade should actually be the PSU before switching to a high end GPU, or at least done in conjunction with the GPU.

Thanks for your feedback! The monitor selection is driven by the best value and quality available. Whilst 144Hz isn't a necessity for Flight Sims, it just so happens that the best monitors in terms of other specification have higher refresh rates. We've also found that variable refresh rate is a very useful feature even at lower refresh rates. And of course people don't *only* play flight sim, so may appreciate higher refresh rate for faster paced games. The build upgrade idea is very interesting and one we have been considering as an additional feature to add later, but we want to make the main site as strong as it can be first.

Good job! Imho mobo should be listed too in build's overview. Some info about future upgrade path would be useful too. For example, if mobo is B660 Mortar, it probably will be able to sustain top 13th gen CPUs or at least 12700k right away.

This is really good idea and I can see could become a big hit in the long run. I would step it up with people can save their existing pc /desired pc. And price changes/better options can be alerted to them. Strike a deal / discount with merchants to offer. It does not allow you to select multiple purpose. I use mine for work, Gaming and video editing. So imo people should be able to select the priority order in which they need the build to be including Price, Power consumption, Future proofing, AAA gaming . I think this should some kind of fundamental definition of the priority, order and MUST have and Nice to haves before the build process.

Very impressive tool, but doesn't give me nearly enough choices. I wanted an EVGA 750W PSU, but was only given a choice of 3 650W units (Cooler Master, MSI and Corsair). I also wanted an i5-12400, but again, I only got 3 choices (12100, 12400F and 12500).

You don't need anything monsterous, and it does depend on your Software. Adobe prefers Nvidia and CUDA, So I'd start out with an RTX 3050 or 3060 which get you 8/12Gb VRAM respectively and a decent enough GPU core to help render out video. Davinci Resolve is more forgiving of AMD Architecture, so an AMD RX6700XT is a good 12Gb option, or a 6600XT for 8GB. If you want to game on it, then just the appropriate gaming card for your monitor and it will be 'overkill' for Video editing. Pugets systems have some great benchmarks on the higher end cards in various software packages. www.pugetsystems.com/recommended/Recommended-Systems-for-Adobe-Premiere-Pro-143/Hardware-Recommendations

@@FernandoBea Thanks for that. It looks like we could have done a better job of separating the options. They are equivalent and the semi modular is a few cents cheaper so it gets picked! The fully modular option is really just a preference rather than an all round better product. But it could be better explained. Thank you for your feedback and follow up!

They are there, where they make sense to recommend. Prior to Alder lake this would have been largely AMD Zen 3 builds. No doubt the tide will turn again at some point, perhaps Zen 4? We're hardware agnostic, we'll recommend the best value and performance products for any given purpose.

I love this idea and you run a great channel. I love how level headed and matter of fact your reviews are. Thus far I have only looked at builds in my price range. One issue that I see is that when I select a $1000 bang for the buck, I don't see the msi b660m-a pro as an option for the motherboard paired with the i512400. This is in contrast with your recent review of b-660 motherboards. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y21hutyTddvRodo.html

  • @BuildPicker

    @BuildPicker

    2 жыл бұрын

Yep - that's honestly sort of by design. Whilst given a free choice that would be our pick, the fact is that there are several 'perfectly good' options for mid range B660 Motherboards to pair with an i5 CPU. So the sensible thing to do if the B660M-A is unavailable or over priced is to choose a more cost effective option, which lets you dedicate money to other components that get you more performance (like the GPU) or just brings down the cost of the build overall. This strategy aims to overcome the problem with static parts lists: When everyone decides the B660M-A is the board to have, it sells out or goes up in price, meaning it's no longer the best option! If you definitely want that board, you can always delete the motherboard from the list and use the build to help you choose the other components to complete the PC.
