Intro to Big Water - How To Kayak

Фильм және анимация

P5 and I join James Burleson and his crew on the iconic Tuckasegee River Section 3. This is a classic NC run that is not too challenging, but yet offers a great environment to improve skills and expose newer paddlers to the concepts and experience of kayaking big water. As P5 progresses in his kayaking, I have been carefully selecting runs and river conditions that will challenge him, yet not overwhelm him. On each occasion, he has risen to the challenge. I really appreciate the invite from James which offered us the perfect river, at the perfect flow on the perfect day! Come along and experience the Tuckasegee!

I’ve been paddling a 95 for the past two years and for whatever reason, I’ve struggled with it (stability/control). Just went with a older Nomad and it’s gave me so much more confidence. I hate it, because it’s a super nice boat.

  • @RiverKingsKayak

@@j24dup one thing I noticed right off the bat on the first day I paddled it, is that the low Chines behind the seat really do tend to stay engaged. That leads to a feeling of the boat isabout to dump but it would always seem to land on secondary stability without really having to do anything but it did give me a really weird first 10 minutes. I have since just learned to come to expect what it's going to do and combat that with a lean. I love how fast it is but my Jefe is my gold standard for a boat that I always feel super comfortable in. I'm looking to try the Delta 88 and the alpha... that's the thing about boats, you really have to get in there with some big water to see what they really do and to see if they match how you like to paddle. The 95 was the first Big Creek boat I've had that seem to want to catch that Stern rail like that. It was something I immediately didn't like about the boat as well. Once you're going forward it does really Hold the Line well and that can help in big water

  • @j24dup

Good note man. Hopefully I’ll eventually get comfortable with it. I’m gonna spend a little longer in the Nomad, (build my confidence back up), before jumping back in the Squirrel. See you on the river!
