Into The Desert - Ercoupe & Stearman - Part 10
Into The Desert, an ErcoupeTV aviation travelogue series. Andrew's 1943 Stearman biplane and my Ercoupe depart on a long adventure across the US.
Fuel and coffee at Winnemucca, then we chase a freight train, fly low on a river run, navigate smokey conditions, and finally arrive back home at Nevada County Airport. Lots of ATC radio comms.
Play List for this series: • Into The Desert - Avia...
1943 PT-13 Boeing Stearman, Lycoming R-680.
1948 Ercoupe 415-E, Continental O-200.

I really did get lucky when I found this one, I think. It's been an amazing addition to my life!
Thanks again James for taking us on this great journey. I just can't get over seeing these amazing, vast landscapes with so many different and interesting geological and geographical features. It's been a real education! It would be good to see more of your friend's journey east plus a highlights / summary of the flights.
Right on James, fun to see your trip, I love that part of the country! Good ole Great Basin.
Hi James, another super video...and yes...I'd love to see the rest of the Stearman's journey and a summary of the best bits. I do so love going along with you at low level over the desert landscapes I love and miss so much. Great low level shots of the train...and the plane-spotter cow! Cheers, Graham.
That’s something a train engineer doesn’t see every day

Would love to hear from a train crew to see if they see this sort of thing often, or ever?!

That was awesome!!!
Never boring James; always entertaining and reminds me of the days I flew DC3's, by the seat of my pants. Glad you made it home safely. Greetings from Oz
"Find that train!" LOVE IT!
Outstanding as usual. Summary of what you thought were video highlights of the trip would be exciting. I really enjoyed the family flights where Diane gave a geography/ history lesson as you passed overhead. You're the gold standard, when it comes to aerial photography.

Thank you! :) I have another trip to Minnesota with Diane and Charles to edit down. Will try and get that started on soon.
Trains planes and automobiles, Cool video, James, you look like one of those old timey barnstormers waving at people! Thank you for sharing.

That is one of my goals in life, to look like an old timey barnstormer!
Thanks again! As soon as I wrap up my Private Pilot Cert, I'll be doing the same type of thing I my Colt. :^) Oh, and "yes" and "yes" on the other 2 summary videos!
Nice to see you finally back home on this trip, James. :)
Another good one James! I'm on medical leave from flying the 767 for several months. Your videos are a great escape. I watch your video on one monitor, and follow along on Google Earth on the other. Fun for the homebound!

Wow, I'm honoured, a 767 pilot watching my Ercoupe videos! :) Very glad you enjoy them, thank you for letting me know.
Nice return flight ! That was a lot of unknown terratory [ for me } ! Well done ! Take care. PS: right now the Navion is down, I'm having to replace the accessory case to cure an oil pressure problem. I feel lucky to have a spare engine I can canabalize...Lol !

How does an accessory case improve oil pressure? Is the oil pump built into it?
Great series!
Fun deal. I have to wonder what all those cars were doing parked in the middle of nowhere at the start of the trip ? Did the train conductor see you ? That was fun.
James, Loving your adventures. Also if you find yourself up near Hood River next spring, would love to try and put together a little side quest with you.

Thanks! He doesn't. He's on instagram though, as air.cooled.vagabond
For those of you that own/fly an ercoupe, can it be used for IFR flight for the sake of flight training? Should a different aircraft such as a PA-28 be used instead?

Hello. You could use an Ercoupe, but it's rare to find one with suitable nav equipment, I think. My understanding (I'm not IFR rated) is that you would need something like a G5 and a Garmin 430 at a minimum to fly useful IFR? 430's are not common in Ercoupe's. You could put one in though. I assume VORs aren't used often any more?

Another consideration, when training, is useful load with an instructor on board. You're only going to get about 450lbs useful out of an Ercoupe... A PA-28 might be a more useful option.

@@JamesGood I didn’t even consider the weight limitations. That’s a great point!. I think the Pa28 and M20 would be better options for what I need. Thanks
