    Enjoying watching this trip. It was a pleasure meeting you at the fly-in. I will be interested in seeing how you document all the stuff at WAAAM.

    My carb heat knob does the same thing...wants to creep in when landing. But I was taught and did teach my students to keep the carb heat applied until on the ground to avoid icing at reduced throttle settings. I know you were taught differently assuming you'll have full power should a go around be needed. Only, it's a real shocker with carb heat off to advance the throttle and find you have no power due to carb ice. So, if a go around is needed, full power, carb heat in. easy. I'm preaching but had a fellow CFI in Hawaii practicing engine out with a student and when landing was ensured, they advanced the throttle and got nothing. Forced them into the sugar cane field, destroyed the airplane.

    Got to fly a hop with Ercoupe legend Paul Prentice in my Coupe at Bowie Tx back in 2002. Also met Coupe designer Fred Wicke at a Coupe fly in 80's. Both signed my logbook. Great memories in 99391 and 3676H.

    Wow, I'm sad that I never got to meet Fred Weick, I would have loved to have done so. I'm currently reading his biography 'From The Ground Up', which makes me think I have met part of him.

    @@JamesGood he was brilliant and took some time with me to discuss Ercoupe and Cherokee wings. A very kind gentleman. I believe the fly in was at lake Wales FL? I can check my log book. Paul wrote an Ercoupe book "Fly about adventures and the Ercoupe" as well. Your plane is beautiful btw...Regards.

    It's a little riskier than the I-5 route up past Shasta (the sea of trees over to Quincy), but after that, about the same. I kinda like this one though. And the I-5 route isn't exactly comfortable as you go past the Crags. Let me know if you do it, maybe we can fly together!

    @@lisakienholz9828 Cool! The biggest problem with the Hood fly-in is the September timeframe. I was blocked out from going for 3 years due to intense wildfire activity around then, almost IFR conditions. Hopefully we get some better years coming up!

    @@JamesGood Yep! I tried to fly up to Oregon/Washington those same years. I finally went early June this past year to get ahead of the fires. I made it but I dealt with am fog and rain instead. Finger's Crossed! Weather, even in CA, has been the most challenging to me flying this Vintage VFR airplane - I'm a planner and weather hasn't been participating with my plans. :) Thanks again for sharing and let us "fly" along with you.

    Nice groundspeed, just remember how great it was when you turn around and go the opposite direction! You seem to get lots of time on your tail cam. Mine always seems to go batteries dead when I want to use it. I've got the GoPro remote but it doesn't seem to talk to the camera when on the tail. My iphone is set to control my in-cockpit camera and often wants to communicate with the tail camera. I guess I need to unsync both and resync only the in-cockpit one...then sync the remote again to only the tail??? I dunno. But, once I do that, I still have no knowledge of how to actually make a video. (Not near as computer literate as you). Really nice video! looking forward to seeing some of your painted Ercoupe models before I order mine.

  • @JamesGood

    @JamesGood

    There is a trim control on the left cockpit wall, beside the yoke. It moves for and aft. Always have it set to the aft position for takeoff and landing, move forward in cruise. I seem to be very good at covering it up in my videos. Will show it in a future one!

    Why not take 80 and head north from there? Such a minor detour as opposed to mountainous terrain you flew over. Wife and kid to think about - I don't get it. The best advice I heard was a bit of a joke. "What does my plane say when I close the hangar door after a flight?" "Next time I'll kill the SOB!"

  • @JamesGood

    It's a valid observation... I've done this trip multiple times following I-5 up from the valley, that route has its risks as well, going up past the Crags. I would miss flying around my local area, if I decided it wasn't worth the risk. I know the risk, and mitigate best I can. I wouldn't drive (or bike) to the airport, if I wanted to remove as much risk as possible. You buy the ticket, and you take the ride...
