Mercyful fate would officially form in 1981 and after a couple of line-up changes the members would be King Diamond, Hank Sherman, Michael Denner, Timi Hansen and Kim Ruzz. This line-up would span the first era of the band up until 1985.
Satanism would play a big part of the band's image and philosophy right from the start. It’s not exactly clear when King Diamond first got his hands on the Satanic Bible, but he states that he lived by its teachings long before reading it.

Being a Mercyful Fate fan back in the early days, it was a wonder that no one knew who they were (outside of a niche of hc metal fans), it's nice to see in later years, the band and KD finally getting the acclaim they always deserved. Mercyful Fate is a band who's originality and influence are beyond measure.

I was really into heavy metal since the mid 80s. Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Slayer, etc. I was never really into King Diamond, but it wasn't fear of Satan or anything like that. The imagery was just seen as cheesey. About 15 years ago, I gave them a listen, and I was pretty impressed. I wish I had really given Merciful Fate and King Diamond a chance back in high school!

Superb indepth dive, journey, and summarization in these workings of Mercyful Fate & the taste of the next adventure, King Diamond, RAWMUSICTV! The thumbnail, is the photo from inside the jacket of "The Beginning' CD. Back in '84, i first heard the intro to the title track, 'the Oath' via my brother (in his bedroom), as he tried to scare me, by turning the lights off and cranking his stereo's volume while playing the LP....the music didn't frighten me, just his tight grip on my arm (as a young boy) did. Give it 4 years later, i was buying my first cassette tape, Abigail. Soon after, i started i had Fatal Portrait, THEM, Conspiracy, and The Eye, all upon release. In 1990 (when CDs fitst debuted), The Eye was the fitst digital disc i ever bought. From that time til now, i've collected (all in CD format w/ the exception of the cassette tape of 'Don't Break The Oath,' the following... Mercyful Fate: -The Beginnimg -Return of the Vampire -In The Shadows -Time -Into The Unknown -9 King Diamond: -Fatal Portrait -Abigail: Collector"s Edition w/ Bonus DVD (Import) -THEM -Conspiracy -The Eye -The Spider's Lullaby -Voodoo I did try to order the CD of Don't Break the Oath, only to discover that the imaging of the disc, was cancelled a while ago (Melissa, was never digitally imaged on disc/ at least not in NA). I'll eventually find sll others that are 'imaged Retail CDs' but if not, it's ok. Regardless, your expertise in research of All Docs, is/are from beyond & top notch! oUtstanding, RAWMUSICTV! ;) *EDIT: Practically, almost all of the concert footage of early years of Mercyful Fate and King Diamond shown here, is on the 'bonus Imported DVD of Abigail Collecto's Ed. CD.' So, seeing it within your doc, was and still is awesome!

I listened to hair bands like Motley Crue; ratt ; Cinderella and all that crap them listened to this band and wow i outgrew that hair band thing. Venom ; Hellhammer ; Mercyful Fate and Bathory the first wave of black metal eras were awesome 🤘

There was metal for the casual listener, like Metallica, Ozzy, etc., but if you wanted to step it up a notch, then old MF, KD, and the emerging death metal scene was where you wanted to go.

When I first discover M.F. I didn't like King Diamond's vocals but, the music itself was so good I couldn't stop listening to it. Eventually King's voice grew on me & kind of like it today. Too bad they broke up though, I was a bigger fan of the M.F. stuff than any of the solo albums, although I haven't heard all of them.

Don’t Forget Uriah Heep as an influence. David Byron is Kings favorite singer hence why he named his son after him. Just wanted to point that out. Also even Though The Beginning was considered a compilation album it did have songs that were not on either first 2 albums and different versions of songs. I consider that to actually be its own album and would definitely listen to it before Melissa. That’s just me though. As far as King Diamond albums…Them and Conspiracy are horror albums as well. Horror stories most definitely. I usually dig your documentaries but this one is like 10 minutes of documentary and the rest song lyrics and the explanation of the concept of Abigail. I feel you missed the mark on this one.

Quotes from famous musician and High ranking Church of Satan member and very close friend to Anton LaVey - King Diamond "Satanism is about the Powers of the Unknown. I have had hundreds of strange supernatural experiences with the occult, the other side, the beyond, whatever you want to call it that proves there is a spiritual world that can cross over into our world. Satanism is a life philosophy so within it you can have your own religion, any religion you want. Or take from various religions or your own whatever makes you happy. I have my own beliefs and Religiously Satan on a spiritual level stands for the Powers of Darkness, the Powers of the Unknown which are always all around us at all times. This is the best way to talk about these Spirits and Powers. Not a god or a devil as both of them are christian god's and that has nothing to do with Satanism. Of course there are different types of satanism. And I never wear gold as that is not healthy for you! Must need something bad and use that during ritual then you might be able to get help from these powers I believe are all around us. But that is only if they like you. I do not believe in the two christians beings god or the Devil, I believe in the Powers of the Unknown, Powers of Darkness, The Powers of the Occult what ever name you want to use. . I have done Satanic Rituals and have seen and heard spirits. Some people like to call "Them" God or the Devil or whatever, but I do not believe there is all one good and one all bad power. I believe there are many, many different Spirits and Powers that exist and that they are not good or evil, like humans they have both inside of them and I always treat them with the highest amount of respect and feel that respect returned by Them. It is massive mutual respect. Not Power, but Powers, Big difference. I believe we are one and the same me and these Unknown Forces. You really have to respect them for the incredible power they have. I believe they come to those who they feel can handle it and who will be faithful believers." In the song "Welcome Princess of Hell" you hear me singing to these spirits and powers and they sing back to me. They came to me to let me know they are here for me on my journey and that they are behind me and that they wish me good luck so I see them as my protectors almost like guardian angels. We all live several lives so that our powers/souls can grow in order to reach a higher plane and join with something greater. Our powers live in a human shell several times that will enable us to go on to a new life form a higher plane of being or join one day with a larger greater force. But 99 percent of the population live by the Satanic Philosophy whether they know it or not. As Anton LaVey even told me that Satanism is simply a life philosophy and NOT a religion. Satanism is based on logic and things that are proven which is why it could never be a religion as religion is based on things that cannot be proven. And that’s why I say that these powers of darkness are always welcome in my home. It’s as if the powers of the unknown came and said ‘Hey, we will stay with you and help you.’ That’s what I feel.” When I almost died during surgery I saw my body below as a demon tried to enter my soul and I had to fight him! These things are very real! Personally I do not use electrical lighting at home and on my Satanic Altar or in the studio when I record vocals, only black candles as electrical lighting drives away the spirits and I love having them near me. People who see Satanism from the Christian view point are not treating these powers with respect and that is very dangerous. I once actually summoned a spirit in order to prove they are real to a girl who doubted and Satan came. My wife will not look in our mirror in fear something will come out. In Satanism you are your own God. LaVey felt and I agree that we are all individuals born with different needs and views and so he felt everyone should make up their own mind about what to believe in spiritually if anything at all which is why he left a huge void in the Satanic Bible when it came to spirituality or any kind of religious beliefs and so within the Satanic Philosophy a person can still be a Christian if that fulfills their spiritual needs. Satan also means the Opposite, Inverted, Reversed which is why we wear the Satanic crosses and pentagrams. Satan means the opposite of religion. Satanism is living out your feelings and instincts without feeling it is a sin, enjoy yourself while you are here now while you can and have your own individual beliefs. One thing I consider almost mandatory though is believing there are powers around us. And you can use these powers to help yourself or those you care about. Or throw these powers at people in a negative way. I am not religious at all but you can say I am spiritual due to my experiences and beliefs. The Satanic bible is not really a bible because a bible is for religion so it should be called a book of philosophy instead. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. When people see the word ‘Satan’ they see only negative. Satan is not only bad, to me. It represents both sides of everything. I don’t believe in the Christian devil. “Christianity has both God and the devil. I believe there is neither of these two. I believe in the powers of the unknown, which I have experienced many times. I know that rituals work. I don’t do them often because you can easily misuse them. They will get back at you if you don’t respect them. Rituals can channel the forces that surround us all the time but I respect the powers and will not abuse them in any way. The Satanic Bible is 70 percent Philosophy and 30 percent magic. Satan is the power of the universe. Satan to me is the Powers of Darkness, not a man with horns. Some people think Satanism is what the Christian church portrays it to be. If you are as bad and as evil as you can be and you think that’s Satanism then you have become part of the Christian religion. That is Christian Satanism which is not what I am about at all. I know these powers are good because they saved my life many times!

I remember when I was a freshman in high school, I had to stay after for detention, and I got stuck having to walk home, and on my walk home a couple seniors in a fox body mustang flew by me then slammed on their brakes, then slamming it in reverse, raising the ass end and spitting backfire flames while the supercharger winded out loud, backing up to me, a door flies open followed by a giant cloud of smoke pouring out, driver telling me "get in kid!" They were blasting "A Dangerous Meeting", and passing a bowl around that was made of air hose fittings that they assembled in automotive shop, and I remember there was a huge monster tach on the dude's dashboard that had a purple shift light that would make the inside of the car glow a creepy purple, and it was the first time I ever rode along for a "burn cruise" and the first time hearing Merciful Fate 💀 🔥 I cherish those days. Heavy metal, fast cars, faster woman, good weed, and good friends. 🎸

Hey, one thing to consider: why would Jesus appear for those who believe and worship an entity considered evil? It's a simple concept; while you worship what's perceived as evil, we worship God because we understand that despite worldly success, finding inner peace remains elusive for many. Recognize that even amidst blessings, there may be demonic influences. It's time to accept the reality of a world that has become increasingly chaotic in recent years

@@RAWMUSICTVDo you know at what point King Diamond put the number "9" on his forehead? He appears pretty young in the video clips, but I don't ever recall seeing him wear that makeup scheme. The footage appears to be high quality & more recent. Do you know the year, or which album was promoted at the time those videos were shot? Thanks very much!

I assume this was during his solo career, specifically when he released the album "Abigail" in 1987. In the song "Arrival" he sings the lyric "If you refuse, eighteen will become nine" referring to the story itself, if the couple ignore the warning of the 7 horseman, Natias (18 years of age) will become pregnant with the spirit of Abigail and give birth to her after 9 months. Or it could be from Mercyful Fates record, "9" released in 1999 as part of its promotion.

Huge fan of KD/Mercyful Fate. I loved 'em for the music and unique vocals rather than anything else, although I found found the dark themes very entertaining. At the time I even named my black greyhound bitch "Mercyful Fate". She was lightly raced but won some good races. Great memories!

Corpse paint came from Dead of Mayhem and Morbid. Obviously he wasn't the first to do that look but he was the first to do it in order to look like a corpse. So it comes from Dead, not King Diamond

So his gripe with "God" is that he doesn't come down and show himself and that makes him evil. That's just foolish. "Satan" doesn't show himself either. It sounds more like an occult fetish with political undertones than a well thought out world view. With that said, aside from his cartoonish persona, those Fate albums had some amazing musicianship and sound.

I think his gripe with god was the fact that god didn't show himself as being real and if you didn't believe in him based on pure faith, he would send you to hell.

But that's not what the scriptures say at all. That's a man-made narrative. Hell isn't an actual place in the Bible. Just like Babylon mostly refers to false religion rather than the actual city, or Israel mostly refers to God's people rather than the actual country. If I listened to all the man-made narratives about it without researching it myself, I would hate God as well.
