The Satanic Philosophy of King Diamond and Mercyful Fate

Welcome to the debut episode of The Metal Mystic, where we analyze the occult philosophy of some of our favorite metal artists from an Orthodox Christian perspective.
Today we're taking a look at the satanic philosophy of one of metal's most influential and enduring figures, the master of the metal macabre: King Diamond-- both with his original band, the legendary Mercyful Fate, as well as his self-titled solo band. King has always been an out-spoken proponent of Anton LaVey and the Church of Satan but, as we will see, he also holds his own unique spiritual beliefs.

KD said in an interview a version of “just because we believe different things, doesn’t mean we can’t be friends”. I believe that’s a very tolerant and open position for someone from any belief system to espouse.

I saw Mercyful Fate in Jacksonville, FL back in the 90s. They did not draw much of an audience there that night. King D came down into the crowd, shook the hand of everyone there, looked us individually in the eyes while doing so and said : "thank you". I do not see satanism as an enlightened philosophy or belief system as it basically is the glorification of our animal natured limbic system , but , King is a true gentleman nonetheless and I will never forget his kindness that night.

This is the first time I’ve seen LaVeyan Satanism accurately and objectively described from a Christian perspective. So many Christians are reactionary and Ill-informed on such topics. There are parts of LaVay’s philosophy that I like but there are too many overlaps with Nazism there for me and LaVay himself was a rather dubious, though entertaining, character. Never listened to King Diamond/ Merciful Fate before. Great channel. Looking forward to watching more videos.

I saw King on the original Abigail tour in Chicago in the 80's. Some friends and me waited in the ally behind the Aragon Ballroom and hung out with the opening band Metal Church. King came out and talked to us, totally in character, some odd dude kind of came out of nowhere, whispered something to King and gave him a trash bag with something about 3 feet long in it. He took it and thanked him. When the guy walked away King turned to us Now totally out of character and said "People are fucking weird man" it was a human leg. The odd guy had told him he "Found" it and wanted King to have it.

What an amazing video. Let me start with this.. I identified as a Satanist up until very recently. This is the most comprehensive deep dive that was intelligent and not biased in any way and was a fair and honest look into the way I believed for my teenage years,up until recently. This video solidifies the hunches and personal skepticism that i had all along ( I'm intelligent enough to have been aware of the campy nature of it all,the pageantry and everything, that I could never REALLY believe all that,COULD I?? Lol) I grew up and to this day a King Diamond fan. Went to the shows, had the records, and would take it to the point of painting my face and I even got the brimstone symbol that he uses in his logo on my right wrist. This may sound strange, but I've recently become a Christian. I think I may have to do something about this tattoo. 🤔 I've become a Christian that will be open minded about other's beliefs, however flawed I think they are,I will try to do as Jesus did and go by everything written in red in the Bible and live like that, and I'll be shown the way by a different "Them"...the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit! Lol

This just came up in my front page recommendations, and I'm so glad it did. The spiritual outlooks of metal artists and their lyrics have been of interest to me for as long as I've been listening to metal. I'm also something of a Christian, though I'm only on the shallowest surfaces of it, I'm getting more and more interested in the traditions and philosophy of the high churches as I see the world rapidly degrade before my eyes. I really hope you're working on more of these.

Great documentary! King Diamond is super talented, yet very confused about the Christian Gospel. King said @15:37 "if God is all-powerful why doesn't he come down to earth and show himself" Great question. God already did that in the Incarnation. Jesus, the God-Man willingly came down in perfect humility to live the perfect, sacrificial life that we couldn't live (and what God requires) and gives us that righteousness if we repent and trust in Christ's life, death, resurrection, and ascension.

Quotes from famous musician and High ranking Church of Satan member and very close friend to Anton LaVey - King Diamond "Satanism is about the Powers of the Unknown. I have had hundreds of strange supernatural experiences with the occult, the other side, the beyond, whatever you want to call it that proves there is a spiritual world that can cross over into our world. Satanism is a life philosophy so within it you can have your own religion, any religion you want. Or take from various religions or your own whatever makes you happy. I have my own beliefs and Religiously Satan on a spiritual level stands for the Powers of Darkness, the Powers of the Unknown which are always all around us at all times. This is the best way to talk about these Spirits and Powers. Not a god or a devil as both of them are christian god's and that has nothing to do with Satanism. Of course there are different types of satanism. And I never wear gold as that is not healthy for you! Must need something bad and use that during ritual then you might be able to get help from these powers I believe are all around us. But that is only if they like you. I do not believe in the two christians beings god or the Devil, I believe in the Powers of the Unknown, Powers of Darkness, The Powers of the Occult what ever name you want to use. . I have done Satanic Rituals and have seen and heard spirits. Some people like to call "Them" God or the Devil or whatever, but I do not believe there is all one good and one all bad power. I believe there are many, many different Spirits and Powers that exist and that they are not good or evil, like humans they have both inside of them and I always treat them with the highest amount of respect and feel that respect returned by Them. It is massive mutual respect. Not Power, but Powers, Big difference. I believe we are one and the same me and these Unknown Forces. You really have to respect them for the incredible power they have. I believe they come to those who they feel can handle it and who will be faithful believers." In the song "Welcome Princess of Hell" you hear me singing to these spirits and powers and they sing back to me. They came to me to let me know they are here for me on my journey and that they are behind me and that they wish me good luck so I see them as my protectors almost like guardian angels. We all live several lives so that our powers/souls can grow in order to reach a higher plane and join with something greater. Our powers live in a human shell several times that will enable us to go on to a new life form a higher plane of being or join one day with a larger greater force. But 99 percent of the population live by the Satanic Philosophy whether they know it or not. As Anton LaVey even told me that Satanism is simply a life philosophy and NOT a religion. Satanism is based on logic and things that are proven which is why it could never be a religion as religion is based on things that cannot be proven. And that’s why I say that these powers of darkness are always welcome in my home. It’s as if the powers of the unknown came and said ‘Hey, we will stay with you and help you.’ That’s what I feel.” When I almost died during surgery I saw my body below as a demon tried to enter my soul and I had to fight him! These things are very real! Personally I do not use electrical lighting at home and on my Satanic Altar or in the studio when I record vocals, only black candles as electrical lighting drives away the spirits and I love having them near me. People who see Satanism from the Christian view point are not treating these powers with respect and that is very dangerous. I once actually summoned a spirit in order to prove they are real to a girl who doubted and Satan came. My wife will not look in our mirror in fear something will come out. In Satanism you are your own God. LaVey felt and I agree that we are all individuals born with different needs and views and so he felt everyone should make up their own mind about what to believe in spiritually if anything at all which is why he left a huge void in the Satanic Bible when it came to spirituality or any kind of religious beliefs and so within the Satanic Philosophy a person can still be a Christian if that fulfills their spiritual needs. Satan also means the Opposite, Inverted, Reversed which is why we wear the Satanic crosses and pentagrams. Satan means the opposite of religion. Satanism is living out your feelings and instincts without feeling it is a sin, enjoy yourself while you are here now while you can and have your own individual beliefs. One thing I consider almost mandatory though is believing there are powers around us. And you can use these powers to help yourself or those you care about. Or throw these powers at people in a negative way. I am not religious at all but you can say I am spiritual due to my experiences and beliefs. The Satanic bible is not really a bible because a bible is for religion so it should be called a book of philosophy instead. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. When people see the word ‘Satan’ they see only negative. Satan is not only bad, to me. It represents both sides of everything. I don’t believe in the Christian devil. “Christianity has both God and the devil. I believe there is neither of these two. I believe in the powers of the unknown, which I have experienced many times. I know that rituals work. I don’t do them often because you can easily misuse them. They will get back at you if you don’t respect them. Rituals can channel the forces that surround us all the time but I respect the powers and will not abuse them in any way. The Satanic Bible is 70 percent Philosophy and 30 percent magic. Satan is the power of the universe. Satan to me is the Powers of Darkness, not a man with horns. Some people think Satanism is what the Christian church portrays it to be. If you are as bad and as evil as you can be and you think that’s Satanism then you have become part of the Christian religion. That is Christian Satanism which is not what I am about at all. I know these powers are good because they saved my life many times!

Great channel and video. I too am an EO convert who still has an appreciation for heavy metal. I think the quote from Fr Seraphim is spot on. If Satanism is just an abstract idea and a generic stance of rebellion, it's awfully interesting that the iconography, lyrical content and overall vibe of heavy metal remains remarkably consistent over the decades. They always seem eager to handwave away the unsavory stuff that couldn't be more explicit. If it's all just a big joke or you're doing it just to troll Christians, that's a lot of spiritual energy being spent on a lark. Just saying. Also, I'm guessing Tool is on your radar screen for a video. They seem VERY serious about their occult fascinations. Danny Carey is basically a living grimoire. His book recommendations are straight up Crowleyan.

It's cool to see an open-minded and intelligent look at the world of metal. Great video! I agree that much of modern Christianity puts less focus on spirituality and more emphasis on the church/clergy and physical aspects of life. Albeit I don't adhere to any faith, I tend to agree that Satanism has taken a form in popular culture and indeed appears to manifest in a cabal like Lavey mentions, however like Christianity it takes various other forms. I do agree with concepts of objectivism (doing what is morally right based on experience) and natural law. I don't however agree in the cynical concepts whereby one places focus solely on the individual. This (objectively) should be the first point of focus, but for me I feel as humans we are social and synergistic beings (like other groups of social animals) and thus we should seek to support each other for the sake of the whole, in which I mean to accept our differences, look to core values and seek common ground through mutual respect. Nothing is very black and white in the world however and bias creates rift, especially in our ever more complex and divided world. Writers like Nietzsche had some interesting points and I do feel that people should be able to express ideas freely without being attacked, ridiculed or dissuaded into other ideas. Instead I feel people should (as a whole) present them as an offering or as food for thought. For this reason I do respect many Christians. Although I may not agree with everything they believe, I do feel there is a disproportionately vast and false stereotype of how they conduct themselves. I feel that the religious 'fanaticism' is by far the exception and not the rule. They are also generally well-intentioned and altruistic people. Sorry for the wordy ramble by the way... 😕

Raised Eastern Orthodox, been listening to metal since age 11. You can tell that his perception of being raised with God being presented as a comic book character and a lack of free will being explained as part of life as part of his perception. La Vey also had a western christian experiences pretty dominantly. (It's why he wrote the black mass out of the catholic mass... To a degree it would also make sense to.) And yeah, the point of christianity is about growing past a primal self. If the focus is the earthly word and what's going on there, you're not gonna get the idea of the above. It's the difference between looking up and just looking around.

Norway and Sweden lead the charge for myself because understanding Satanic Rebellion as a liberation from Theocentric anti-intellectualism, and the dangers that may come from the newfound freedom are sung about without ambiguity. At the end of the day, I just tune into the lyrics as traditional ghost stories and fairy tales, which often run on much the same cautionary themes of arrogant people messing around in things they don't understand or should have left alone, and living only long enough to regret it. King Diamond is very good at that sort of thing. I've never had much use for the satanic philosophy per se - and I've never been entirely convinced by it: King Diamond is also an extravagant shock-rock carnival/pro-wrestling-style showman who seems to be willing to claim just about anything to sell his act, with pretty much no line at all drawn between Kim Petersen the human being, his over-the-top King Diamond stage persona, and the King Diamond character from the songs: there's only the rarest moments where I've seen him break kayfabe long enough to laugh self-consciously about his roadies telling fans that he writes songs in a castle lit only by candlelight and sleeps in a coffin full of Transylvanian dirt and kills fans who disturb him, or explains how one of his stunts went wrong and almost got him killed in a burning coffin on stage, or whatever.... I mean, I guess he MIGHT take the philosophy as seriously as he claims he does, but he seems far more like one of those old-fashioned horror hosts who dress up in ghoul makeup and light up a few candles and puts on a little Halloween show for the boils and ghouls watching some old-fashioned Hammer vampire movies, Roger Corman Edgar Allan Poe movies, Universal werewolf or mummy films, or whatever the monster-of-the-week is this time: there's a little more Monster Mash kitsch to the act than usual for this sort of thing, which I think actually helps King Diamond stand the test of time better than his more "serious" looking counterparts in, say, Mayhem or Necrophobic or whatever are likely to....

ATTN INCOMING CURIOUS METALHEADS: Read this first. I really appreciate how much effort you put into the research side of things, especially parsing out King's beliefs through the years. I guess I should have read the blurb before the video, because I did not expect this to get super preachy at the end. What started as a great comparative analysis quickly turned into a "Now this is why this all wrong" preach akin to a to street corner sermon. Again, great analysis early on, but then just backtracking on how King's and other Satanists "belief" systems are wrong in the eyes of orthodox theology diminished a lot of the enjoyment of this video. I am not slinging mud by any means, I just think I will watch other metal analysis videos that don't such a "gotcha" message.

Hey man, phenomenal video. I'm a Christian myself and have been a huge MF and KD fan for a very long time. One reason I've never identified with Satanism is because it just didn't age well at all. With all the enforcement of hedonism, selfishness, lust, pride, greed, etc, it really just reflects on the shallowness of the world today. Especially in modern western society. And there's nothing rebellious about being so sucked into the worldly things. However there is something to be said about standing your ground and doing what's right in the midst of being surrounded by pressure and bullshit from everyone else. That's the type of fire Metal lights in my soul. That's actually the type of mindset Metal was built on with some the things Black Sabbath sang about as well as a lot of the Doom Metal bands. but I digress, because even if it didn't age poorly on a cultural level there's just nothing fulfilling or deep about that mindset and it will only lead to the destruction of our real intended human nature. A lot of these satanists, atheists, nihilists, hedonists, and even just ordinary shallow sheltered kids of today tend to think that human nature is still a a very primal animalistic thing and we should just adhere to are very desires because it just is what it is. But they forget what makes us humans special. The fact that we have a deeper intellect and emotional capacity to us, and that gives us the ability to decide what even right or wrong is. So we could live amongst each other in the upmost joyful way. Let's just hope some of our favorite musicians come to understand that.

Their obsession with winning the culture war was their greatest downfall. Why? Atheism isn't a cultural glue that holds a civilization together.

Our witness is the best interpretation. All the world has is Christian Witness. It's important to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

Although he doesn´t seem to really believe in Laveyan Satanism, despite being closer to his philosophy.

I've been a King Diamond fan since the release of "Abigail". It's hard to believe that was 35 years ago now. I think the video is pretty good where analyzing the CoS is concerned, but I'm not convinced it correctly reflects what KD actually believes. That he was an avowed follower of Laveyan Satanism in the past is indisputable. I think it's also indisputable that his belief system in the same was in many ways a reactionary rebellion to Christianity and especially of some of the activities of Christian leaders. One of the best examples of this view can be seen in the album "The Eye" which is largely based on a number of true events during the Inquisition, and in general, he has always particularly held up the Inquisition as a prime example of why he considers himself in opposition to Christianity. That being said, even though he was an "open Satanist", especially in the early years, this does not actually appear to be the case in more recent years. On several ocassions in the last decade he's been quoted as saying that some of his beliefs have changed, though he really has not gone into any details. In particular, he has stated that he no longer really considers himself a Satanist, but again, he has not went into detail. For the most part, whatever change in ideology has taken place, seems to have originated around the period of his big health scare, as well as him settling down to a domestic life in recent years. In addition to making a lot of physical life changes in the last decade, it's also apparent that he's also undergone some sort of spiritual change as well, even though he has not said much about it. What that change is, I guess only he knows, but it seems that his belief structure has changed in some way. In that regard, even though a lot of your observations are probably pretty accurate of the King Diamond of 30 and 40 years ago, I think a lot of it is less applicable now. I doubt if he's become "born again" or anything remotely like that and it's clear that the same things continue to interest him, but at the same time, it seems that his beliefs have evolved in some other direction in recent years.

Hey! Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I think you're right about King kind of settling down in recent years and maybe not being 'hardcore' about satanism. He talks about this in a MetalSucks interview from a few years ago. But in that interview he does say that his fundamental beliefs haven't changed at all. Thanks again for watching!

King is an atheist. Satan is a symbol pure and simple. You could say he lives a good basic moral life without God or the devil. But the question is, can you live a good moral life without God or the devil? Definitely King does not want to be controlled by any organized religion. He's a shock rocker and an artist. It is hard to know what he believes in. I guess all he believes in is himself. Love his music and MF, btw.

As a Christian and loving Metal and King Diamond, I like horror films, but to me it’s like I’m watching a movie when I listen to KD. I love his lyrics and stories, he’s an intelligent guy. What I don’t understand is why be called a satanist if you don’t believe in satan? It makes no sense. When you serve something regardless of what it is, you are a follower of that. There just seems like no foundation into what you believe in when you want to be referred to as a satanist. I’m a Christian so I’m a follower of Jesus Christ. If you are a follower of Lucifer, you are called a luciferian, if you are from Iran you are Iranian, see where I’m going. It needs to be called something else. If you are a satanist you should be a follower of satan, but that’s what doesn’t make sense. It’s kind of stoopid, I hope I’m making sense here. The similarities of this self gratification is that’s the temptation of Lucifer himself. He does anything that he can to keep you from finding Jesus as a savior, in the end though, when we die he is getting the last laugh cause he tricked you and you believed it. Please don’t fall for the trickery. If any one has insight and I’m wrong about anything I said I’m ears to listen. God Bless you all.

King Diamond himself has actually said that yes, you can be a christian and a satanist as Satanism is life philosophy and not a religion and does not concern itself with the religious/spiritual side. And because of that within Satanism you can have what ever spiritual beliefs work for you, including Christianity. And I have met people in the Church of satan who were also members in the christian and catholic churches. Even King has his own spiritual beliefs that answers things for him, but are things not in a book or part of religion and not part of satanism. it is his own personal beliefs. other Satanists have also said if belonging to a religion and going to church brings you joy then it is very Satanic to do so

King deals with metaphor and a lot of other esoteric ideas. He had a mentally ill grandmother who disowned his mother and some of those albums deal with that. The 9 album actually spells out his “actual” beliefs more than other albums. Take “Last Rites”: “I don’t believe in Heaven, I don’t believe in hell, so save your god for someone else, save him for yourself!” An ironic fact: his favorite meal is the “traditional” Danish Christmas dinner, no joke!
