    The Mariner 4 has 3 layers of PVC and is constructed more like a modern inflatable Dinghy, whereas the Excursion is a raft. The PVC is very durable on both, they're not easy to puncture as long as you don't over-inflate them. The Mariner is without question more rigid and better quality, but it's also twice the price and almost double the weight at 91 lbs without anything added. If you're looking for true portability, something that can be easily transported, stowed in a trunk or pickup truck, then set up quickly for a solo fishing trip, the Excursion is the better option simply because it's lighter weight, and can be managed by 1 adult. If your intention is a portable raft for solo fishing trips, I'd recommend the Excursion 4...it's still large at 10 ft, has plenty of room for at least 2 adults, and is even more portable than the Excursion 5. IMO it's also tougher because of its shorter length...it's more stable and solid on the water, especially if you custom-cut a 1/2" plywood floor for it. I'd take the Excursion 4 over the 5 any day of the week for 1 or 2-man fishing trips. The $20 price difference might motivate more people to purchase the Excursion 5 (vs. the smaller 4) since it's quite a bit larger, but don't overlook the Excursion 4 as a viable fishing rig that is easier to stow away, set up, and take down especially for solo fishing trips. The Mariner 4, in my opinion, is heavy enough to warrant a trailer, and most won't want to deal with set up and take-down of a 91-lb inflatable. It's more back-breaking to load a nearly 100 lb raft into the back of a pickup truck. The Mariner 4 weighs more than the more expensive, higher-quality Saturn 9-11 ft dinghy boats (those weigh in at 70-75 lbs). The less expensive Saturn dingy boats are still made with high-quality German Heytex Denier 1100 reinforced PVC, which is what the more expensive inflatables (costing $1000 or more) use.

    I have used Excursion 5 for 2 summers now. Have used it purely for family joy rides in safe bays and sailing along the mountains on Hollidays. I see that mariner 5 is better built but much less space and near enough double price, therefore i believe Excursion 5 is a winner for joy rides at least. Light weighted as well. I have carried it on my shoulder 2 miles up the hill with electric motor and ores from very wild cove, where there was no way for a car to come near it. The only issue excursion 5 has is with built in hooks which are there to hold inflatable chairs in place. Do not use hooks , or they will tear causing air leaks. Also inflatable floor imho good as heaven. That extra wooden planks floor for mariner 4 just takes more space in the boot and makes you carry extra stuff

    Major difference is that mairner 4 has an extremely tough guard all around the perimeter, protecting the boat against the rocks and the rigid floor allows anglers to cast their fishing rods with much more stability compared to soft inflatable floor of excursion. Also customisation for mariner 4 is unlimited, starting by replacing the floor by one, or two, or three plywood floor covered with carpet and then allow to install an outboard with more power and speed of course.

    No mistake the M4 is a much better boat than the E5 but I made a plywood floor for my E5 and the stability difference is incredibly better that I can now stand up in it. I love the room in my E5 especially the internal floor space width. I didn't buy the E5 for speed/gas engine, I just have a trolling motor for it for calm rivers and lakes. If they made a M5 that was internally bigger than I'd certainly upgrade.

My plan is making the wood flor, and build a mount from the floor to hold the motor, so I can put like a 5 or 6hp motor. Would you say size is an important factor in between this 2? I would most likely have 2 ppl in it, but the size of the E5 seems nice to carry more stuff.

    Can you tow these with a boat or ski if you don't have people in them? Maybe just like 40/50lbs of gear tied down? If so what speeds? Where do you tie off to tow them the front grab handle, or multiple points?

  • @ChrisG9978

    @ChrisG9978

    2 жыл бұрын

    I wouldn't tow by any of the handles or the plastic rings designed for threading the grab rope...too much risk of tearing the handle off and damaging the vinyl, which would deflate the boat quickly. The Excursion and Mariner are too large to tow, they'd probably create too much drag on the water to safely tow from a typical boat w/outboard motor. You'd be best off stowing either of these boats deflated on the main boat, then inflating them and dropping them in the water, then rowing or cruising to shore like a Dinghy.

    Presence of the fabric layer with two PVC layers is essential for the good quality boat. That's why Mariner boats are perfect, as their prices are not as high as other good boats, but they still have the fabric layer in their walls. PVC wall without of fabric easily breaks with no reasons and cannot be recommended.

    umpy315 we were at a put in doing a regular floot. Bringing the boat down, son accidentally dropped his end whole trying to bring the boat down. Landed on a sharp rock but we still floated even with just 3 chambers. You can see the rip here. kzread.info/dash/bejne/q2qWuLiJe9m3htY.html

We went so far they turn into ant size still watching us. If your gonna buy a trolling motor get 55lbs thrust new vessel along with 12v 50-55 anp battery with the intex motor mount and always used level 3. You'll be good to go for a long time out there..

    @@vitornieri5700 works real well, just don't constantly use full power, (level 5).. It will get you further faster, but it can also drain the battery faster.. I would use 3 to get you where you want to fish, but you will move because of small waves, just bought a 3.5 lbs anchor I will tell you how that goes, but when your done fishing use 3 and 5 to get you back faster. Unless you find a use gas motor which I have no clue of anything about that lol.. good luck,stay safe and always have a safety vest around you..

    Mariner looks ugly as hell, it have no advantage over the excursion except slightly more durability. I've even had the $20 explorer raft being dragged and bumped rubbed against rough dock and it only had few punctures in the floor, the pontoons were intact. Punctures usually happen at bottom due to the boat being dragged and scratched, that can be prevented by adding a protective layer at the bottom. Infact some of the more expensive inflatable kayaks are made of the same cheap vinyl but are covered with a protective fabric that can be put on and off with zipper. Just buy a cheap air mattress($7-20) and use that to cover the excursion's bottom.

    Maybe you cannot currently buy the Mariner series, but for not much money like me (one dollar is 59 Dominican pesos) a good idea is to register on Amazon and apply for up to 12 months of financing without interest for some other inflatable in existence. when we really are water and outdoors lover we need to do something about!

    I can add that the Mariner 4 has a load capacity around 800lbs. Can handle a 3hp motor (max recommended). Comes with ID# recognized by Coast Guard. I have not registered mine but told I could. Sorry I have nothing to say about the Excursion except if you believe that will work you might as well by a air mattress.
