I think the part of your video that hit me hardest Dylan is when you said that you felt devastated that you hated the AVGN Movie. I think we all felt this... We all felt terrible that somebody we were rooting for, admired or even were inspired by...had made something so important to him but was so bad that we couldn't even lie to ourselves that we liked it. So bad that it practically ruined his chances for a future in what he wanted. So bad that we couldn't blindly support it for James sake while keeping our integrity in tact... It IS devastating to have to do that, felt like I was telling a family member that their hard work failed.

Great interview. I'll add I always thought the 'you take this too seriously' charge is kind of funny, because James taking the production of the show seriously was and is part of the draw. High effort, guerrilla filming wasn't really done in the earliest years of KZread. James not only took it seriously, he treated it like a show until it just became a show. It's ironic now that people act like no one should critically assess it as art, almost as if it was one of those filmed-on-a-webcam, no-effort first year KZread shows all along.

@@haveanotherpinacolada Yes I am! I was an unpaid Production Assistant for Suburban Knights in 2011. I worked from 6am to about 8-10pm each day on the production, and got roped into a lot of their dysfunction. They were down a person, and so I became "Cloak #2" in the film. During the filming of the final fight, the guy who played Malachite botched a stunt, and stomped my knee in (in front of everyone there, I might add)). Since I was a production assistant (and not on the site yet), they didn't have me sign the waiver when I got there, which stated they weren't responsible for injuries. I hobbled my butt back to the house, and no sooner when I sat on the couch, Rob Walker stuck the form in my hands sign. TBH, I don't remember if I did or not (I suspect I did), but yes, that absolutely did happen!

This was another great collab, it was cool to hear you guys and Dylan discuss a lot of the psychology of his video. While I do think it could have been more concise or quick in parts, I did watch it in full when it released and thought it was very thorough. I feel bad that people still blindly think simple discussion and analysis videos like Dylan's and Red Cow's are like blind attacks against James. Often I think they have a point with some of the fans growing up and growing distant from the show, but it is subjective, and I can explain what makes the older videos still work for me. It's just weird how it is still perceived by some fans that saying "this doesn't really work for me anymore" equates to shitting on everything James does or has done. But whatever, it is fun to dissect the oddities as they drop from the ceiling. Great video again! I didn't even catch the "Crow" typo at all, haha.

Alot of James videos remain to this day some of my favorite videos on KZread ever, but I'm on board with the fact that they drastically have dipped in quality. However I remain a supporter of his in hopes he will one day start doing what he wants again. Although his most recent uploads seem to be a step in the right direction, I believe he needs to go through some kind of metamorphosis to become great again. How? Oh boy there's so many possibilitys. The 6 hour concern is a sad reflection of our attention spans. Many of the people complaining spend 6 hours in front of a screen everyday anyway. But they are just watching 2 minute videos. Why does a well articulated essay focused on a fascinating topic with tons of information scare people away? Sad

  • @Hobojoe4464

People are weird, they'll have a short attention span for one thing, but they'll binge watch half a season or more or a show in one sitting. That's if they are even "watching" it in the traditional sense (actually having their eyes on the screen instead of elsewhere) I know Dylan's video would work as a podcast as was discussed, but when something is primarily a visual medium, and you ignoring the visual part by "multitasking" then you can miss alot. If you're rewatching something it's a bit different to when it's new to you. I watched the video on and off last weekend.

Not all people, lot of us enjoyed it. Some other bloke did a 7 hour and 11 hour video on Morrowind and Oblivion and they were popular. Different types of people aren't there, some like 6 hour videos on AVGN, some like tiktok.

@@Hobojoe4464 I mean if you're going to multitask while "watching" something, this autist's overly-long Cinemassacre vid should definitely be it since the viewer can't make out most of the visuals anyway.

Be real, two hours of the video are totally unnecessary, it's literally just him going through every episode one by one until he eventually gives up in the middle of the series and goes straight to the criticism of the nerd, and it's like, why even commit to that bit to begin with? Should have been cut. Stopped watching two and a half hours in. No doubt there was more that needed to be cut.

For what it's worth, I'm a little bit older then AVGN. I've watched his entire career as an adult. So I have no childhood nostalgia connected to him. His series dropped off and became tired a long time before Screenwave (but those episodes are noticeably worse). It's been middling for a good 10 years. The problem is, he not really a critic and everything is pretty surface level. As a result the shtick became older much faster. As he come across as genuine nice guy so I think a like a lot of people hold back on saying he probably doesn't have skills (emotional or otherwise) to be a real filmmaker. I say that with no joy. I also work in distribution/production and have worked with countless filmmakers so I think I'm in a good position to make that assessment. I can't imagine he even wants to be a filmmaker anymore. It's clear his focus is his kids (so it should be). Hopefully, he's invested his money well, and AVGN will allow him to provide for his kids , and give them a good future.

The formula to a good/classic style AVGN episode is super simple. James' anger needs to be genuine, he needs to be a sarcastic asshole while talking about the game and he needs to sputter his words a lot as if hes too frustrated to talk coherently. Talking about how unfair the game also helps. His current episodes follow some sort of weird formula or checklist where it feels like some sort of build-a-nerd that they think the fans will enjoy

  • @NavySharkz
