Guess I'll chime in. James just issued his apology: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iYKHubCFncynqsY.html The plagiarism in the first episode was a huge mistake and misunderstanding and that first script was definitely plagiarized after looking into the online software. We noticed a few issues with other scripts, mainly Bad Taste, which was replaced by The Host. Since the incident the uploads had a few issues with pulling a few trivia facts, which should have been cited fully, but didn't have the damning issues that the other two scripts had. Yes, I agree, James SHOULD write ALL of the Monster Madness content, but needed extra help this year and trusted us to get it done. Aside from that, a lot of these films, being Around the World are out of James' wheelhouse, more obscure international films, especially countries that only have ONE horror movie or you need to know about anime or something, so we enlisted some help. Which bit us in the ass. Regardless, he wrote a ton this year, or added his input and opinions into each script. And in 15+ years of Cinemassacre and 5+ years of Screenwave we have never had issues with plagiarism. This was a one-off issue which we are fixing. -- Aside from that, Screenwave Media DOES NOT own Cinemassacre. We are just partners. I am an employee of Screenwave, not CEO, and I help produce Cinemassacre as half my job here. James is still 100% in charge of his channel. And, by the way, props to the weight loss. Gonna watch your video on it fully, really interested, think it will help motivate myself to shed pounds. Thanks. -- I'm a bit too busy, not a lot of time to do podcasts right now, but I would love to come on your show and lie for two hours straight in the future. That's a joke by the way. I know this will be spread around.

I'll resist the urge to make a No Time joke! Really appreciate the corrections and additional insight. And thank you for clearing the air on the ownership thing - lots of people went out of there way to tell me Screenwave Media owned Cinemassacre, glad to hear the truth from the source. Would love to chat more sometime, online or offline, about this, my struggles with weight, and anything else.

James was never used to any sort of criticism, and when it started he reacted a bit like a child would when the teacher asks him about the homework. "I haven't done it because my dog ate the books". And when he got help with the video production, without telling his viewers excactly how much help he got, the small white lies grew to bigger lies and he kept a straight face about the whole situation. He absolutely knew what he was about to do when he gave away the whole Monster Madness trademark to some other guy. He thought he could trick the viewers yet another time, but the gun blew up in his face. The untouchable all of a sudden stood there with his pants around his ankles. After that he did what every adult would do in his situation; he uploaded an unlisted apology video on the smaller channel.

All people want from Monster Madness is a brief overview, a few highlights and a recommendation. It was a nice look at the interests of a guy whose videos I watched. If Monster Madness isn't James' thoughts, they might as well not bother. Even without the plagiarism, I had no interest in Justin's, Kieran's, Tony's or Newts views on anything, they are nobodies.

So apparently someone also discovered that Newt plagiarized a ton of jokes from the James Rolfe roast. Given that three Monster Madness reviews have been plagiarized, this wasn't just some one time thing of "Oh shit I have a week to write 20+ scripts" (the amount that Newt claims to have written). This is very much a crutch he's casually leaned on several times. I'm sure Screenwave's kind of shitting bricks right now, not just for the material they have to remake, but because Newt's fingerprints might be all over years of work. What the hell happens let's say if an AVGN episode was plagiarized and then sold on a bluray - if the original author(s) finds out....

I agree that a big point of contention here is James' unwillingness to be candid about essentially selling off Cinemassacre to a third party whose sole purpose is to farm low-effort content (using James' likeness but not made by him) for profit. If he'd been upfront about that, there wouldn't be so much controversy. But, since they are trying to pull it off that Cinemassacre is still James' passion project, and that he creates the majority the ideas/content on his channel - people sense bullshit there because it's obvious the content is not made by him and is awful at that. It's that hypocrisy that is causing so much friction, and makes James a fraud.

@@sororitysleepawaymortuary1659 People are feeling betrayed either way. They're losing subscribers either way. The disingenuousness of it all is what rankles the most for me, and for a lot of people. Cinemassacre always prided itself on its DIY, low-tech, independent, small-team-operation aesthetic. It was very explicit that everything produced was part of James or Mike's personal vision. To hollow that out and treat it as a facade behind which a corporate entity is churning out material on an assembly line... it's really disconcerting for a lot of people. You can see that in the people who are only just discovering, via this plagiarism issue, that James no longer writes the material himself - I've seen a tonne of genuinely hurt and saddened comments from people who were previously oblivious. James wanted to have his cake and eat it too - he wanted to preserve his image as this DIY independent auteur, while at the same time clandestinely turning his company into a corporate cash cow. Treating his audience that way is disrespectful, and slowly but surely it's coming back to bite him.

I am also looking at it this way, a lot of us have jobs that we hate and would be grateful to be doing what he does if we had the skills and the opportunity. I don't want him to piss it away to where he has to work at a job he hates. I am sure he has to deal with stuff thats not fun behind the scenes as well as good stuff, but I bet it beats other jobs. Also if he has to go back into the job market employers won't listen to "I have no time, or but I have kids." Of course that is an important priority, but so is feeding them and if this goes away he will have to answer to somebody who doesn't care and possibly doing something he hates to feed them. I really want the best for him and the rest of the people that work with him and I hope this lights a fire under him to have more oversight of his content.

I think you hit the nail on the head that these new Monster Madness episodes, while it’s cool to have them and it’s a neat concept for a MM season, just don’t quite feel like James’ old charm. It feels more “researched” in a way which takes away from this sense that James was just talking about movies he likes.

I'm around the same age, and have been a casual fan of AVGN over the years (just avgn not mm or any other cinemassacre stuff really) and even to me the decline in quality and lack of authenticity is SO obvious. And the constant over acting/fake emotion with the stupid gaping mouth face is SO annoying!! I can't stand it lol

Didn't Bootsy leave because cinemassace didn't pay him or some compensation dispute? My theory is Mike left because of the direction Cinemassace was going with the Screenwave merge/buyout. Honestly, after rewatching the 2019 monster madness. I would have been fine with unscripted 31 horror films like rental reviews.

This is an old video but I thought I'd leave a message here. It's been this way since around 2016. When James started to "review" games from the ps1 era like RE survivor, I noticed that it wasn't him playing, and they actually lied about the version they were using and were emulating it instead of using proper hardware, which caused ALOT of bugs they wrote down and claimed are part of the actual game in order to keep the episode going. So yeah it hasn't been james writing, playing or doing much for years now, he's just the voice, nothing more.

I wrote a comment on Jame’s apology video which was uploaded to the “cinemassacre clips” channel. The video has since been taken down. Well that didn’t last long. I guess they realized that admitting that James wasn’t writing the scripts was worse than the plagiarism.

Every October since the one where some random annoying dudes started showing up in Monster Madness videos, I've set up a yearly thing for myself where I have a list randomizer choose me 31 MM videos to watch (mostly videos from the same date, like the October 7th '07 video on October 7th '21) and, though I've seen all of them and pretty often end up remembering them, it still feels like I'm getting a true Monster Madness. I knew better than to expect anything significant out of what they were gonna do this year but still looked forward to at least seeing how *EHHHSS* it would be. I searched for "Monster Madness" on KZread, nothing new showed up, so I went to the Reddit, first thing I saw was the word "plagiarism" and I was like "mhm yep time to randomize a list again".
