I appreciate how fair you are to James. It's easy to just mock (which a good portion of TheCinemassacreTruth is nowadays). But I think it's more interesting (and nicer) to give something a fair shake.

It goes to show that a lot of the things that make a web series unique and special don't translate well to the big screen. We let a lot of the horrible effects, bad acting, and crass humor slide because it's an indie production in someone's basement. With the movie, I think James tried to make something that was grand, but inevitably because it's chained to said shitty effects, acting, and humor, it just doesn't work. I feel bad for James. Every filmmaker has made a really shitty movie they leave in the past. It's just that for James, he's defined by that failure.

It's obvious how much James has grown to resent that movie, since he will go all the way back to the Six Snix Flix and other retarded shit he made as a child, speak of them fondly and recommend people go watch them, yet he NEVER references the AVGN movie.

Yay, you finally acknowledged Overanalyzers! That was probably that first Cinemassacre thing I just didn't enjoy at all, even as an awkward teenager, it was just bad. Everyone seems to have completely forgotten that series, the new talent in that show was also weird and stilted, oh well. A great discussion again, it was nice to hear you guys shoot the breeze about the concept of positive and negative discussion and more worthwhile discussion on James' mindset. These are always great to listen to, Frankie is such a good host, and Brian added a lot to the discussion in my opinion. I know people will cry "dead horse" and that James is living in our heads rent free, but damn these deep dives are fascinating.

I actually really liked Overanalyzers when it was new, at least for a couple of the 4 or 5 episodes - the memorable ones being Batman and the Easter Bunny. That having been said, the most memorable things it led to, imo, were the jokes made about Stephanie Yuhas and Matt Conant during the Roast of the AVGN in 2013 about no one knowing who the heck either of these people are.

You know, I have to admit, I'm a lot more entertained by the drama around the slobs than I ever was by AVGN. (Although I still think Board James was great.)

I’ve also re-cut the AVGN movie! Down to 90 minutes with credits. Not sure why except that my editor brain was screaming “and cut!” at me the whole time watching. I’d be curious to see what you cut. I mostly tightened pacing and shortened some jokes that either over explained themselves or went on too long. During the climax I totally cut the whole McButter goose chase.

Holy shit I've been waiting my whole life for this video and never realised it!

That animation program is Mario Paint, it's really easy to record on a VCR since it plays on a TV, and you can make simple animations and compose music on it, it's a great SNES game to have if you're a creative kid in the early 90s.

Seeing Jimmy with that moustache finally explains why he associated with the peso from Screenwave...

I find that part where Frankie talks about the director that suggests finding your gimmick you have access to, and making the film around that = genius. I feel like there are way, WAY too many indie filmmakers that think they're too good for that approach, and just end up showcasing their overall weak writing skills by attempting otherwise lol. This is where I think James was in fact ahead back in the day! Huge Frankie fan BTW.

I also had a video store a block away from my house as well , also a small movie theater . Then I got lucky a blockbuster came in. I had the local and a blockbuster in walking distance. I it was great as a kid. Plus I had HBO. which was great pre internet

these avgn cultists are so f'n funny to see. even as a fan, i can see where James has shot himself in the foot.

People love trash James for talking about his childhood movies so much but I have to be real, I think it's the coolest thing he's ever done. I think most artists are guilty to some extent of trying to hide our embarrassing early work and cultivate the illusion that we magically entered the world with our present level of ability. But James has always been upfront about how it took years--decades, really--of making crap before he hit it big with AVGN. And when I was a kid that was so reassuring to see. It made me want to pick up a camera and get out there because if this guy, who had a wildly successful web series, started out with a VHS camera and a paper mask, then what was my excuse for not at least trying? I think his candidness about his early works spoke to a LOT of people of my generation who grew up with the wild west of early KZread.

This is the comment I wanted to write. His childhood films really resonate with me, and I don't understand the insistance that he shouldn't call them films. How are they not films, just because a kid wrote them? Do they magically stop being a film after you grow up? Do they disappear after you make your first "real" (???) film? What makes it a "film" is that it was a feature length video with the artistic goal of presenting itself as a film, with titles, actors, stories, "effects", credits, a screening before an audience, and a physical release. The quality of it has nothing to do with whether or not it is a film. The fact that a child was able to do something beyond making simple home videos in its own right is impressive; it's the thing we're praising him for on KZread after all: he was one of the first to do something besides upload home video footage, he was doing the same trailblazing even when everything literally was nothing but home video footage. Why should we take that accomplishment away from him? It's one of the more bitter criticisms.

RE: The animation - It's possible it was done in Autodesk Animator. That was the animation program I worked in around that time.

I love AVGN and watched (and continue to re-watch) every episode... But honestly I've tried to watch the Movie two times now, and I fell asleep about three-quarters of the way through, both times. When I wake up I try to go back and pick up what I missed but I just fall asleep again. It's frustrating because I really want to like it but I can't. I'll have to try Frankie's unofficial cut.

As someone who likes to riff on modern cinemassacre, I gotta say this video was fair, solid, and insightful. It is neat tracking the progress of a young film maker through the six snix flicks, going from shakey pov cam to actual shots for example. The intros are definitely egotistical but you have to put yourself in that mindset, as a kid you're going to be inherently proud of what you make most likely, regardless of actual quality, and at least older James can laugh it off. But you touch upon the most crucial part of the whole cinemassacre drama, and it's that the same flame/passionate ideal behind those snix flicks, as goofy as they were, just isn't there anymore, and we as an audience long for it to come back for James. Otherwise Big Ryan is going to have to greenlight a Snix reboot with Justin Silverman....

I do notice that as soon as the guy on the left is about to make a point/come to an epiphany, the guy on the right immediately interjects and attempts to fulfill the thought. This lets me know you guys are truly close friends- as my buddies and I often do this to each other, we're so close and experienced so much together we often know each other's thought processes. But for a stranger listening to you two talk, and wanting to hear from the both of you, it *really* grates on my attentive ear when I am mentally prepared for one voice to finish its thought, and another voice just stomps over it and says something different. Any chance you can make overtures to try and minimize your interjections? They appear loud, fast, and often- and I can never really figure out what the guy on the left really thinks and feels because it's constantly superseded by the guy on the right.

Haven't watched these, but it sounds like there's a lot of parallels between this and the early Polonia Brothers movies, which have a similar charm. Hallucinations is def worth checking out.

Hilarious community, and I'll miss hate-watching the dumpster fire that was the self-destruction of Cinemassacre 😂. But it's probably in the rear-view mirror; CinemassacreTruth sort of engineered its own obsolescence 🤔

When is the next season of Comic Book Men coming out??? Looks just like Walt! Anyway, I'm burnt out on Nerd videos also but I've been watching them since 2008? I saw Angry Gamer or whatever his name was 1st. It was just great to see all these old games again. I liked that Angry Gamer always beat the games and showed the endings. But James filmmaking skills proved to be really great especially in the infancy of youtube. So I've see all these games again and I think I'm good for this lifetime. That being said, I can't say if James has gotten redundant or I've just played the videos out. It would be interesting to hear from others who may be seeing his work for the 1st time? How much does he pull in if that is public info? His videos continue to rake in a few hundred thousand views last I checked? I'll give him credit there. I've seen so many youtubers that I enjoyed hit their expiration date never to be heard from again. James is definitely still going if nothing else. But, Yeah, I might watch a little of his newer work and then my attention goes elsewhere these days. This comment is actually in response to one of your other videos.
