Cinemassacre Podcast SUCKS! And James Rolfe should really know better.

The guy who used to make funny rant videos about bad video games from the past for some reason decided he should start a podcast. Okay, well does he have talented friends who could cohost? Nope. Not even close. Who Are These Podcasts does a thorough review of James Rolfe and his wildly untalented and uninteresting cohosts Justin Silverman and Kieran Fallon.

    I feel like the main problem with this podcast (which has been cancelled since this video) was that these guys were coworkers. They weren't friends, they barely knew each other, and never seemed to care to know each other. Also, James has always talked about how he never really cared about video games, and that the Nerd was a character based on Mike Matei.

  • @radicalcentrist4990

    @radicalcentrist4990

    Well that's the red flag right there. If he doesn't really care about video games then all of his video game related stuff is just forced, but he keeps at it because that's what made him. As far as I know he was always more into movies.

  • @kedsarama

    @kedsarama

    Жыл бұрын

    @@radicalcentrist4990 Yeah, he's always been more of a movie guy. I feel like even though he wasn't much of a video game guy, the Nerd still worked for a very long time because they were scripted videos with a lot of help from Mike, the guy that the character was based on, so it felt very natural, even though James was acting. It's become a problem recently because Mike is gone now, and these new guys seem to be more video game guys than movie guys, so they're not useful when it comes to movie-based content, and they can't really go off Mike Matei for the Nerd anymore. So now they just have no idea what to do with a channel that I'm sure they paid a lot of money to purchase.

    Yeah there's a huge difference between that. One of my favorite gaming podcasts is the Gonintendo podcast and despite it being specifically situated on Nintendo news all the people there have been best friends for literal decades and have such great synergy and humor with eachother that you could listen to it even without them talking about gaming related stuff. Like I don't even go to the actual site anymore and just listen to the podcast itself because they're just a joy to listen to lol

    James Rolfe wasn’t supposed to be the Angry Video Game Nerd after all. While he used to make a great AVGN with his (the Nerd)‘s over-the-top angry humour, this sounds like the very role Mike Matei was born to play (alongside Bugs Bunny, Jason Voorhees, The Cowardly Lion, The Joker, Leatherface, Michael Myers and even a Klingon!) because it was far more up HIS alley than James’s!

  • @sameash3153

    @sameash3153

    Жыл бұрын

    @@kieranstark7213 Notice that all of those roles involve costumes and exaggerated voices. Mike wasn't an actor, he didn't want to be on camera, especially not in the starring role, at least not early on. Mike did eventually take over the channel if you remember that, and the videos where he attempted James Rolfe style comedy and special effects are notoriously remembered as terrible videos. However, when he switched to more straightforward reviews, you could see that his tone sounded a lot like James when the nerd would have a more instructional or down to earth section in the review discussing the game mechanics. Since Mike has said that he used to help James with "research" for the games in the early episodes, my theory is that Mike ghostwrote those more informative sections of the AVGN episodes.

Mike Matei has also revealed he wrote a lot of Nerd episodes. Other KZreadrs and streamers have mentioned it too, that Screenwave pays them to write a Nerd episode and sign an NDA. James doesn't play the games, he doesn't write the episodes (anymore he used to and they used to be better) he just gets a script and reads it from a teleprompter. Apparently, it might have been Mike doing a lot of the work with James mostly being the talent. The vibe I get is that when Mike was overwhelmed and tired, he did less work, then James had to either learn how to do the stuff Mike did by himself, or find someone else to do what Mike did, which ended up being the Screenwave guys. You can see it when he talks about the behind-the-scenes stuff. He knows lighting, he knows editing, he knows how cameras work. What he doesn't know is how set up and tear down sets, among other things, because that's what Mike did. That's why when Mike was involved you got the epic fight scenes with the boxes and practical effects, then when he left you got the green screen stuff, and when it was just James in the early days he just sat on his couch. It's not that he doesn't have time, it's that he doesn't want to learn how to do those things that others did for his channel because he has nothing to gain from it, no matter what he'll always be a famous Internet personality.

    Well, yeah, he is. I thought this was an open fact, he first talked about special education in the pre 2010 era. It's why the cruelty around him bothers me so much. It's blatant ableism tbh. Not in the sense that they're shitting on a guy who happens to be on the spectrum, but because of the things they think are worth ridicule: his introversion, his failure to read social cues, his poor time management, his bizarre interests and fixations, his mispronunciations, his stutters, his inability to speak extemporaneously, etc; it's like they're literally going through an autism checklist and laughing at each symptom, because each one of these things is directly linked to his autism. Like at a certain point you'd think these guys would be like hey maybe all these things I'm laughing at are pointing to an actual problem and I'm just shitting on that problem, but they usually just laugh even more when they find out he's autistic. Saw a lot "highly regarded autist" jokes on the truth forum.

    @@sameash3153 Well, like I said I’m on the spectrum and thus have more right to talk about this topic than most other people. And no, James’ problems don’t come from him being autistic. It seriously looks like he just got more incompetent/lazy throughout the years. He has the dream job of millions of people, all he needs to do is play games, write funny jokes and throw a sponsor at the start of a video. That’s it. And he was great at doing that for years without a budget. He’s still able to do it, just look at the Last Ninja episode that was amazing. But instead he hires those douchebags that do all the cookie cutter job for him. I know his ultimate dream was to be a director, but the AVGN movie just proved he’s better at recording himself punching someone in a Bugs Bunny costume rather than making real cinema. It feels like he’s ungrateful for all the luck he had at being an internet celebrity, and treats fans like idiots that will buy these stupid excuses about “time”. Though the people in the truth subreddit do act like dumbasses quite often. Sometimes they’ll just mock James for what he’s wearing in a photo or something like that, and this is not constructive criticism in any way. This behavior just gives weight to James’ argument about the “asshole variety” and does more harm than good. The decline of AVGN has little to do with James’ disorder and he deserves the criticism, but some people will just act like monkeys in this situation and give the rest of critics a bad rep.

After watching one of the newer AVGN episodes, I decided to go back to the old catalog of episodes to see it it was just something I liked because of youth and was always bad or if the new stuff is inferior. The new stuff is totally inferior. What was meant to be just watching three or four old episodes turned into a whole evening. It holds up. It was still funny and enjoyable because there was some guys with talent helping him back in the day. Too bad James screwed them all over leading to them leaving one by one...

He just does it for the money. I feel sorry for him as he has talent and could have been a big time director, his movie could have paved the way if it was anything but the AVGN movie. The entire idea was stupid. He literally could have done anything else and it would have turned out better. Now his confidence is shot and he just goes through the motions. First, I must say I've been an AVGN fan since he was the Angry Nintendo Nerd, ages ago. James built a solid and awesome channel from scratch. It was nice see him including his likes (as his taste for horror and movies overall) and succeding in doing so. I'm no hater; all the way around. BUT Since those fat dudes took over, it's plain sad seeing him minimished; they interrupt him to say some stupid thing and he's like: "Yeah, yeah." It's depressing dude. It would be fine if they like, make a very intelligent or clever comment or shed light with priceless knowledge but no, they spit some empty argument and we all are like: Huh? I stopped watching these new Cinemassacre's videos when those fat guys started, first appearing and then talking about their lives, likes or whatsoever; I'm here for James! Who the heck are you? Anyway, I just hope James stumbles with this video and realizes what's going on. Because the consensus on internet forums and even Facebook is that Cinemassacre's is dying and rotting and not because of James, but of external individuals who weren't there when Cinemassacre was built by James. I still watch Cinemassacre's OLD vids really often; it's cool to watch when James did this for passion; when Cinemasscre was a team of friends having fun. And not a bunch of unkown retards talking bs. Peace out.

    The podcast is just unlistenable. And his friends are terrible. Even Mike and Jay had a very rocky start with half in the bag. They had to prove their worth and earn their fans. And they did because the two of them are fun, funny, they have interesting topics and interesting takes on those topics. James and his friends are just so boring. Mike Matei is better in every measure. Mike has gotten way better on his streams. Him and Ryan also started doing a podcast, but they do it so sparingly, and it's genuinely better than James podcast. If you want good old video game stuff, check out Mike Matei or "U Can Beat Video Games".

    The problem I find is that there is no chemistry whatsoever between James and the screenwave crew. Half the time either James will talk about what he is passionate about or he is silent while the others rant about nonsense. If James would stick to being on the podcast by himself and having a guest star or a regular then it would probably be alot better. As far as Rex viper goes...yeesh. Yeah, I tried to get into it, but you're right, the podcasts are boring, have no central theme, it's literally random shit and just boring. I mean, even for a random 'shoot-the-shit' podcast you have to come in with at least 1 or 2 main topics you want to cover, and you also need people good at having one story lead to the next and so forth. I have a small channel and do a podcast too, and let me tell ya, a LOT of it for the editing side is editing out the long silences, all the extra 'ums' and editing out when someone loses connection and we're waiting for them to come back on and stuff like that. Then again, my podcast is about wrestling, so it already has a theme, and even when we go on tangents, it's still related to wrestling or wrestlers.

    I watch their new podcast... and it seems like the co-hosts are better at long-form talk than James is. James is great at scripting and acting stuff out. That being said, his new series of videos of him getting emotional while reading fan letters on how much he's helped them is a little douchey, and feels like he's patting himself on the back. Also, the new music stuff is pretty cringy with his band. I think it's cool that he takes up that hobby, but it should be on a separate channel... nothing worse than nerds trying to act badass playing video game metal lol.

    I think one issue is some people like Angry Video Game Nerd and some people like all of James Rolfe's content. Like, I enjoy AVGN, Board James, and Monster Madness, I can just listen to James talk about movies for hours, but some people have higher AVGN level expectations. My biggest issue with the podcast is Justin cutting off, talking over, and essentially acting like an on screen producer all the time. That plus the guests have been pretty lacking. If they REALLY wanted the podcast to blow up they'd do an episode with James, Kyle Justin, Bootsy, and Mike. People would tune in to see/hear the old crew talk old times, what they're upto now, and go over how things got to where they are.

  • @VideoGameMasters09

    That's true. James can go hours talking about old horror movies, editing equipment and cameras and stuff, but when it's unplanned, random just, whatever off the top of your head kinda stuff, he doesn't know what to say. And I figure he can't talk about the stuff he actually can go in-depth about because well, there's separate videos for that. The other guys being boring and not knowing what to talk about also make it even worse.
