Top 10 Worst AVGN Episodes

Ойындар

Maybe your top 10 list looks different than mine, this is just my personal opinion. I've been watching AVGN since 2006 and couldn't have made this video if I wasn't such a huge fan.

I'll be honest, I came here specifically to talk about the editing- primarily that he needed at least SOMETHING to start the video. I do see your argument as well, however, because digital video is still an evolving medium and KZread is constantly changing their platform(who KNOWS if written titles will be seen in the future), I would still recommend you at least preface your video before diving in. I didn't really get a sense of the creator until the end- and that could be a harm to gaining followers, and also gives more picky watchers something to grab onto instead of just the promised subject. Either way, good list- but I feel it's very Screenwave centric (not without reason), and I would suggest another video focused on his 10 worse EARLY videos, because man- there are some stinkers in there as well. Despite that, the Nerd was known for his honesty and passion, and I'm sad to see that slowly going away as it becomes more of a product. Keep doing what you all are doing, keep that same passion up, and I may jump back in if KZread recommends another of yours. :)

Every Screenwave era skit feels like a Nostalgia Critic skit, and that's the fundamental problem. James loves practical effects, and it really showed when he got creative in his first few years of Halloween episodes. But everything Screenwave has done is green screen crap. It's uninspired.

That’s the one sketch I can forgive. The sketch is supposed to based off the 1973 version of the wicker man. And I’ll admit, they got the tone of the cultist in the movie down pretty good. I’m not a modern AVGN fan all that much, but I’ll admit the plot and execution in the Shrek episode is actually well written.

Not gonna lie, I really liked the Shrek one and the Black Tiger one. I admit that might just be because I'm a huge fan of Shrek and the Wicker Man and in the case of the latter because Gilbert Gottfried carried it. Admittedly in the case of Black Tiger it did feel like the game was giving more material than was really used.

Personally my most HATED AVGN episode is the Ecco the Dolphin one. Ecco isn't really a bad game, it's just frustratingly hard. AVGN didn't even use the Passwords to get to the final levels, which is a shame, because his reaction would have been priceless, ESPECIALLY his reaction to the final boss, how different it is in the Japanese version, & everything else. And the ending of the episode, DEAR GOD, it offended me! Ecco does NOT deserve the hate, it's not Jekyll & Mr. Hyde bad, just a super hard & surprisingly weird game.

So like, I'm one of the people who through all of the years has kept watching Nostalgia Critic videos and I will say this: 100 percent, everything people make fun of, the cringe worthy skits and the fact that he's just kinda watching the movie along with you for most of the video is absolutely not good. But, in my opinion, the sections where it's legit just doug walker talking about what he thinks about a movie and explaining what works and doesn't is the one thing keeping me there. In a Nostalgia Critic episode, it's customary for me to skip past the terrible skits to protect myself from cringe. But once you get past that, he actually does have really informed opinions and explanations for why he feels a certain way on movies. The "Doug Reviews" videos on his channel are by far his best videos in my opinion, just 20 minutes of his thoughts. Honestly I would much rather the cringe skits that I can skip and a guy that genuinely talks reviews the media to an extent than what modern AVGN is at this point, which in my mind is essentially nothing but cringe skits. Like, any "review" section from a modern episode just feels so unmeaningful, and the skits lack any kind of passion and are largely just as cringe as the Nostalgia Critic thing.

I can't list them all because 2006-2013 is the best era in my opinion. Some post-2014 episodes that I liked were Berenstein Bears, Megaman, Amiga CD32, Planet of the Apes, Contra, and I really enjoyed the 12 days of shitsmas as a whole. The Life of Black Tiger’s review itself was just ok, but Gottfried really does elevate it a ton. He always knows how to nail a line delivery even if the joke itself isn’t that funny, but it was probably more script driven than improvisation driven. As for the Shrek review…….eh. As much as I love it when the Nerd goes full on horror like with the Polybius or Bearstein Bears and it could’ve worked on its own as a fun little short, Having it be needlessly tacked onto what was mostly a pretty comedic review just felt out of place

I agree with a lot of these being on the list. My personal number 1 would have to be episode 200, because it takes a neat concept (Nerd reviews every LJN game), and then spends most of its runtime on recycled clips from old episodes, with most of the new review bits amounting to "It's okay, I guess", and in doing so, it means he's got nothing left from his arch-nemesis to cover going forward. I actually don't like the Carmageddon 64 episode for one reason. It doesn't seem like The nerd actually knows that the version of the game he's playing was based off of the censored german release of Carmageddon 2, not the original Carmageddon, which has a PS1 port exclusive to Europe. Here he's just not made clear of that, unlike in the Atari Sports episode where he intentionally acts dumb just for the episode, here he's not even acting dumb, he doesn't get the fact that it was based off of Carmageddon 2. In fact, he did say that the reason why Titus didn't use the john williams theme in Superman 64 was due to it being based off the pretty awesome cartoon show, the only good thing coming from him during the Titus trilogy (which is what I call it), but he never mentioned this game being based off of Carpocalypse Now's gameplay. He also asks why Konami didn't do the console games based off the Simpsons line when he never realized that Konami never owned those console rights to begin with.

I think this really cuts to the heart of watching newer AVGN--the side parts and skits in the episodes are sooo hard to watch when they're half-assed. What's more, the years have not been kind to James' effects style and production level, as he went from legitimately the most adept and equipment-invested creator on KZread in the late '00s to someone doing it in a way that's seemingly deliberately sophomoric, even in ways that aren't entertaining. In the older episodes, the little episode gimmicks are like fun pieces of candy throughout the meal. Think Kevin's ninja in Ninja Gaiden--it's so silly and cliche, but is executed with so much gusto that it's hard not to enjoy. When you're making these silly little jokes, any insincerity in committing to the bit is going to stick out like a sore thumb. The game review content is generally watchable even when James sleepwalks through it, which is a testament to how much practice he's had making that kind of expository delivery engaging. And I'm actually going to give the slobs--err, the Screenwave guys some credit and say that they managed to replicate James and Mike's written nerd voice pretty successfully a few times, and legitimately brought some adaptive flair of their own to the narrative style over the years.

And I know people complain about "weh James doesn't even write his own scripts anymore" or "the humor isn't the same anymore" and all of that shit. But I feel that even if these problems didn't exist, newer AVGN episodes *STILL* wouldn't hit the same as older ones. That's just kinda the natural way of things. The punchline of the cult skit in Shrek is the fact that it's all reference to film "The Wicker Man" from 1973 (not to be confused with the film with Nicolas Cage). I'm not saying it's good punchline, I'm just saying that's why AVGN's crew thought it will be funny.

The worst thing about the Shrek episode for me is how heavily it relies on the really tired, outdated Shrek memes, instead of perhaps using the Shrek games to talk more widely about how licensed games always fail to capture to essence of the beloved properties they're based on. Heck, even having Shrek just show up at the end to fight the Nerd would have been better.

How many more times do you need to hanmer that shit in? "Durr I think licienced games based on children's movies suckk". God damn, I get it. That's not funny either.

The Kingdom Hearts one was just insulting. Honestly I would’ve just like if he did a episode on playing the game etc. dude had no idea what he was talking about and didn’t talk about it’s deep combat mechanics or how it revolutionized Action RPGs and action games as a whole. Since it’s one of the first third person action games that got the hack and slash combat right.

I guess I'm not only one not a fan of a modern AVGN. My favourite AVGN were in late 2000s. I'm disappointed it's kinda like a product that used to be Made in Japan now Made in China

#1 is well deserved. It is the only AVGN episode I shut off midway and couldn't finish. But that Drake and the 99 sDragons would be my #2 pick. It was just as dull and boring as Kingdom Hearts. You could tell James had never played the game. No enthusiasm at all in his acting... all monotone.

For me, the Shrek and Vegas episodes were the episodes that made me realise that AVGN wasn’t the same anymore. I found myself watching his newer stuff less and less and I never quite put my finger on it. I used to highly look forward to new episodes but I ended up not being as interested more recently, skipping out on some videos. Then I watched the Shrek and Vegas videos and for the first time, it fully clicked with me. “Wow, this sucks”. Shrek had that awful ending while Vegas felt more like an extensive parody than an actual review and that simply wasn’t for me. Since those, I haven’t seen much of AVGN’s newer videos.

Is the immortal episode on here? Because they gave a lot of people the wrong impression of that game. They exaggerated things and flat out lied about other things

This might be the first ever video in a long time where it's straight in, no intro. Wish more list videos were like this, also fear and loathing in Las Vegas might actually be my least favorite episode of AVGN of all time, when it got to that bit i didn't know that was the entire video so i just clicked off

I actually liked the Alladin review (minus how dumb the last part was). I didn't mind the genie either, as I found the bad CGI to be a part of the joke and kinda funny. Also kinda liked the Game gear tapes one.

Yeah, the bad CGI was funny, It was intentionally bad, a riff on the CGI Will Smith genie in the live-action remake.
