Fantastic letter I agree with Elvis bracking down barriers. His music his voice his personality and his grace. Reached the souls of people no matter the colour of skin or any religion. He truely was a blessing sent down from above.

The man kicked down the door for greats like Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Fat's Domino, an others of whom he was a fan and who could not break through as Alan Freid was trying to do on radio. . What more do you want.

Great letter great insights! I heard that during Elvis first live performances it were the black teenagers who went wild watching him perform. Elvis was the first white singer to bring black music in front of a white /mixed audience which was unheard of back in those days but then again only a musical genius like Elvis was capable to blend gospel rythm and blues countrymusic rockabilly and present it in his own unique style moving and singing like no one else before or after him.

My Grandmother was born and raised in MS, and saw Elvis when he was starting out I believe in 1953. She had 3 children at this time and this is what she told me." He was playing at the little community center we went to for live music, but we went to hear fiddle players but instead when we got there Elvis was playing, but the fiddle players were going to play after he was gone, so we stayed. The teenage girls were all google eyed over him and he was in the front of the dance hall with that dishwater blond hair down in his face. Then some guy started yelling at his girlfriend that was flirting with Elvis, Elvis said something to the guy and the guy pulled a knife. Hon I'll never forget the look on Elvis face when that knife came out. Those with Elvis stepped in and the guy left and Elvis & crew left and the fiddle players started. " Needless to say my grandmother disliked Elvis very much, she saw him as cocky and a show off. I always thought it funny how she would point out Elvis dyed his hair black like she knew some secret. However my father played music and was a teen in the 50s and idolized Elvis, Daddy also had a band he formed in the late 50s and actually made a living. I was born in 61 and my birth certificate says his occupation was musician. So this mans email is correct, my grandmother couldn't stand Elvis....but she loved Conway Twitty...go figure!

what fan would not agree with this email? what is unfortunate is that the misinformation (due to lack of knowledge, interest) concerning Elvis has lasted for so many years that we still have to redress the situation today. It is much easier to always go towards the clichés and the prejudices which have been hammered home for too long and have become « realities » to be corrected. With Elvis we will constantly have to put the work back into practice, which is certainly why the fan base is so solid and important. Bravo to the person who wrote the reality.

Very points made in this email Ed, thanks for reading the email. As a black person myself, I've recently been struck by the number of much younger black and white adults doing Elvis music track reviews. I do tune into one or two at times and really enjoy their enjoyment and awe of discovering the music of Elvis. Two themes tend to come through, his looks but most of all his voice. Combined as we know as generational fans put all that together, the moves, the charisma and persona and it's no wonder he's the ultimate generational superstar. Rock on Elvis Presley 🎉🎸🎷🎹🎵

Elvis opened radio air play for racial music. I was at Rock n Roll shows in ‘ 55 and ‘56 in Brooklyn the black artists dominated the shows and it was peaceful. Elvis opened the door for DJs to play mixed music. Check billboard charts for 55 56 and 57 and see the massive changes that took place

Excellent commentary . Many of Elvis's fans are very articulate, and I have been keeping some of the best posts on various channels, by copy and pasting to Word pages on my computer. It is not online where anybody can read it - just for me to go back and enjoy the comments when I need inspiration. Some people such as your anonymous email friend should be writing for publication.

Elvis has recived criticism all of his performing life to this day because of jealousy from all inferior performers and critics who just didnt like his kind of music.
