Well, there are Several things that will make Intel cry next year but honestly, AMD will likely be forced to take the consumer base since Intel has pretty much abandoned improving it. Between AMD pushing the envelope on what consumers should expect on consumer products and the fact that in a few years, the server market might manage to lock Intel out completely (ARM is HUGE in the server market and last week got a BIG win, Amazon will deploy their own arm chips instead of buying Intel's), there isn't much that Intel can bank on. AMD Zen arch and Ryzen/EPYC line continues to expand, while Intel's hold on the computing market continues to erode from all fronts. Still from the looks of it AMD might get the pyrrhic victory from this, since I have NO idea how AMD cracks into the server market without an ARM line. Simply put x86 is a crux in that market (mostly because of the massive amount of bugs and exploits on the platform that give the cloud [and sys admins] headaches) and AMD choice to focus on x86 is rather hazy when the market it shifting against it (And RISC-V is definitely on the horizon, with neither big player in that pot)...

@hdshatterify - Surprisingly, "mainstream" business desktop/laptop suppliers (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc) are slow to bring out AMD based products. It could be because "big business" purchasing agents keep checking the "Intel" box on their order forms, when placing those multiple thousand unit orders.

For the AMD vs Intel..I will compare them non-tech wise. AMD has a CEO approval of 93%. Intel has a CEO approval of 78% (Glassdoor) If the higher up makes a fucked up decision, then you are doomed. Having bad management also is a killer, bigger killer than being behind few generation in terms of tech. AMD's new CEO has a high emphasis on communication, and that might be the reason the company got back on its feet, from making losses to making profits. AMD if it changes its corporate culture which it is doing , will eventually surpass Intel. It is also not just about hiring talented folks with 999999 IQ, it is about keeping those folks in the company satisfied and preventing turnover.

Intel has saved AMD from bankruptcy several times, in order to not be a monopoly. Intel is not a monopoly by any standard, except that everyone but Intel sucked at making processors until last year. Being mad at Intel for not having competition (AMD), would be like being mad at Ford because KIA sucked... Remember the alternative to Ford, if they had never existed, was not KIA, it was a horse, because Ford invented cars. Intel invented processors, your alternative to Intel if they had never existed was not AMD, it was a pencil, typewriter, and slide rule.

@@Valhalla_Awaits94 I am an economist myself. The fact is that Intel is not a monopoly. They have competition (AMD) in large processors, and Qualcomm and others in small processors. Monopolies are only bad when they harm consumers. Not a given. That's why the law only bans anti-competitive monopolies, not all monopolies. Your opponent sucking, is not anti-competitive. Again, Intel has paid money to keep AMD in business, just to avoid becoming a monopoly. You can't be mad at a company for being successful. From 2007 to early 2017, AMD produced terrible stuff. Then they made better stuff and became competitive. That means Intel did not have an anti-competitive system in place, they won by merit. Intel invented the industry. They are better at it than everyone else. Nothing wrong with that.

But come Christmas day when he downloads and plays a bunch of games hopefully he will forget all about it.

+Fa11, they have innovated extensively. Their Core processors dominated for years, because they were the best in the world for a decade. Only now do they have competition, and they are still quite competitive. Right now, Intel is making leaps and bounds with innovation, not the least of which was their Optane solutions. Additionally, they have been working on a 7 NM architecture for some time but running into issues. Either way, this tech is expensive and time consuming to develop, but it cannot be argued that processors haven't improved massively in the last few years. Rather, Intel has been working on efficiency and optimization, and new features, rather than raw performance increases (as it isn't really a huge concern to make bigger single processor systems today). After all, we have multi-processor systems for servers and advanced computing, and we don't need really powerful processors for gaming because that's primarily GPU driven. The reality is that my old I7-920 could handle most Triple AAA games today quite well with the right GPU, and my modern several year old Xeon (basically an I7-4770) can handle all modern games on high settings with 8 GB of DDR5 graphics.

Great video and good to see that you included CAD applications to your benchmarks. It is true that almost all CAD applications benefit from clock speeds rather than core counts. However, as a design engineer myself, I have NEVER been in the situation that I will have only Solidworks/Creo/Intentor/Catia/NX openat any given time. I will have one or two of the aforementioned CAD packages open plus Autocad, plus 1 or 2 spreadsheets as a minimum, plus Outlook, plus whatever antivirus the company you work for has installed, a web browser and I will be running a 1st pass FEA or CFD simulation. On more extreme cases I will be having a full on CFD study running while I am working on CAD. That's why you need core counts.

So as I understand: Intel was holding back cores from consumer CPUs, offering them in very expensive HEDT processors. AMD comes out and offers high core count for consumers at an affordable price and forces Intel to up the core count on the consumer CPUs. Now HEDT is pointless because the only ace it had (lots of cores) is available for cheaper consumer CPUs. In addition to that, consumer CPUs have an advantage now by having a GPU in them, which HEDT does not. Is this correct?

Wait what? Other than the reliability of ECC (most stable PC I've ever used by far) and the performance of a low-end i7 at a much lower price, the main reason I got a Xeon E3 was because it had a noticeably better integrated GPU than the consumer lineup. Most enterprise applications that aren't video editing don't need a discrete GPU, but anything doing any rendering at all will need *a* GPU, and accounting I'd imagine would prefer not to allow a CPU that doesn't come with one to be installed. Nobody has a real Xeon alternative though, so it's not like they killed the server market if they did get rid of the integrated graphics. Heck, they could charge $3k for a 2011 Celeron with no GPU that they label a Xeon because it supports ECC, and what else would there be to buy? AMD Opteron is a joke, nobody wants full APUs on a mostly-headless server.

Keep in mind that it's Intel who invented Haswell Cpus. Theoretically if Intel had kept their Haswell line and then did the "Skylake and above" line completely separate, then Intel could still have Cpus competitive with AMD Ryzen. The issue here is Intel's product line-up, things like broadwell and broadwell-e, kabylake-x which is now reached its peak performance, too many coffee-lake cpus for a single generation, and HEDT. But that doesn't mean those offerings are bad, because they all perform generally around they were expected to. Intel Xeon even performs as expected. That's a lot less trash than AMD previously releasing bulldozer architecture and refreshing the same exact thing for YEARS, and not providing a suitable replacement for AMD K12 for even longer than bulldozer's cycle( another reason why Xeon has been so relevant before the release of EPYC and Ryzen). AMD is only good now because they capitalized on Intel's lack of 1. Haswell-style general performance cpus that can still compete with "single thread float-style" cpus and 2. A competent server CPU that doesn't cost an arm and a leg like a Xeon does.

  • @laurelsporter4569

It won't match a new Ryzen 5, for sure. If you can get about 100% time on all cores, it might *approach* the lowest end of Ryzen 3s, though (while using 2x to 4x the power from the wall). You should check your library's performance with Intel vs. AMD, though, and try to track how well your code actually scales out. Some perform about the same on either, while others are much better on one or the other (in the FOSS world, it's not always in favor of Intel). If it can scale out, and AMD performs well, the Ryzen 5 and 7 line-ups have a number of CPUs that are very good values. If it should perform better with Intel, though, get an i5 or i7.

I have an i7 6800 and nvidia gtx 770 on widows 10 and it works fine except when I try and edit 4K video. My pc knowledge sucks can someone just tell me what I need to edit 4K without it being laggy? I seem to have really bad lagging with my GoPro footage. My mavic 4K video doesn’t seem to lag as bad. I’m guessing it’s something with how the video is encoded but I don’t know what needs to be upgraded. I use adobe premiere.
