Installing the Frets | Project Mehr | Guitar Build Log Part 4

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We are finally gluing up the fretboard to the neck, sanding the neck up to 220, the fretboard up to 600, installing and bevelling the frets! This neck turned out absolutely incredible and I couldn't be happier. Don't miss next week where we will be bookmatching the walnut drop top and machining the body!

NIce job. First neck? Coupla small details may help you: * Use 1/2" wide scotch gift tape to cover truss rod, and leave it on. Scotch tape is quite thin, probably less than 0.003". * might want to use 2 clamps across, parallel to fret slots, at nut and heel to keep the fretboard from sliding relative to neck base. Glue ups can be very challenging because the glue acts as lube initially and everything wants to move. Or create small spot faces on both neck and fretboard for alignment with a very short dowel, coin like in dimesions. Alot of builders use this approach. * when sanding the profile of the neck I always use a 2" strip of paper, folded on itself, and sand with the grain. Cross grain sanding marks suck and very difficult to remove. Sandpaper pretty strong. * I try to use something to backup the sandpaper when i can, small sanding forms, sanding block, sanding spindle pieces, dowels, pads. I try not to use my fingers.

Yes sir, first neck! These are some great ideas! Thank you! I actually used some dowel stock and various items as sanding blocks on the flatter areas or on the transition from the nut to the headstock, but unfortunately much of that didn't make it into the video. The back of the neck and headstock/heel transition didn't lend well to sanding blocks so my fingers worked really well, but I had to be cautious to not change the geometry.

Stunning work Austin! I love the volute neck/headstock transition it's beautiful as is the piece of Wenge. We always resort to the built-in glue spreader 👍🏼 Good job God gave us fingers

Fingers are where it's at. I just wasn't getting as much control as I would have liked with the card. And thank you!

very nice work! Did you glue in the frets? I found if I don't do that, they can and will move over time.

Why not machine guiding pins and holes to keep the pieces aligned?

I thought about that, but I didn't want to flip the fretboard when I was machining it. I could have machined 2 small through holes that would be hidden inside the fret slots though. In the end the alignment came out perfext so I'm happy :) but yeah I made it harder on myself for sure

This neck is looking gorgeous, the fretboard looks really nice. You're grain filling the mahogany?

Current plan is to leave the grain unfilled. I'm going to either use danish oil or linseed oil, no top coat. But I will be doing a wet sand on the neck which will slightly fill the grain
