Installing an Android Head Unit in a Volvo XC90

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I’ll be covering the process of installing a Seicane Android head unit in a 2006 Volvo XC90.
This is part 12 of my $700 XC90 overhaul series! Check out the playlist to see everything I've done to it!
Link to the radio I installed - The option for vehicles without AUX is no longer available here, so you may need to find another vendor or find the harness required elsewhere.
www.seicane.com/2005-2014-vol...
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
On models that do not have the factory AUX port (like this car), parking sensor beeps will no longer be heard since the amplifier is bypassed - I did not have parking sensors and learned this from commenters. The subwoofer (if optioned) may not receive signal from the new unit as a result of the amplifier bypass - my car was equipped with 3rd row HVAC controls and as a result has no subwoofer, so I cannot test this.
These should not be issues on cars that were equipped with AUX and use the later aftermarket radio harness.
If you have any questions about the process, leave me a comment!

    Thanks! I think the cars with the factory Aux in connect differently and don't bypass the amp (but may piggyback on it). The box may be the CANBus decoder which allows the radio to read certain systems in the car, like headlights, reverse signal, and steering wheel controls.

Thanks again I have the same car as you but from 2003 without the aux cable

  • @frenchineer

    With this install, any audio through the head unit comes out of the car speakers. If you have backup sensors those don't make sound anymore because of how the install works. I got this unit with the cables for a car with no AUX, but that option is no longer available where I bought mine. I am not sure where that is available, so you may have to research other sellers. I'm glad you were able to fix your airbag light!

    I think you could look at the navigation unit and remove the fuse for that. It does also seem to be a fuse shared by the optional sirius radio and rear seat entertainment, so if those are features you have and use, maybe you can unplug the navigation unit instead. The navigation unit is under the left front seat, and you could try to unplug it there to prevent it from running. I hope this helps!

    Thanks! I haven't looked into the DVR options much since I install standalone dashcams in my cars, but the product page does mention DVR compatibility with a USB camera. I am also not sure if it would also use inputs from a backup camera like I installed. There may be some android apps you could use to record multiple inputs, but processor capacity could become a limiting factor, so that's something to consider in your research.

    Hi, I just installed a Teyes Android head unit on my XC90 which is more or less identical to yours. I had the same problems with the speaker wiring. In addition to the left front speaker, the rear left speaker also didn't work for me. The assignment of the speakers (FR was RL etc) was also messed up. I probably wouldn't have managed to install the head unit without your video. One question: Does your parking sensor (rear) still work? Unfortunately mine doesn't anymore and I don't know if it's another problem with the wiring.

  • @frenchineer

    @frenchineer

    9 ай бұрын

    I'm glad you were able to fix the wrong wiring! For the parking sensor, the output is tied to the amplifier, so bypassing it means the sound from the parking sensors has no speaker to go to. This car didn't have the parking sensor option, but another viewer thought of adding an extra speaker and wiring it to the amplifier. You could probably tuck it under the center console or leave it under the seat (and as a bonus it might be a fallback if you need to use the factory radio in a pinch).

I went to the harness in the ampli and also saw a mismatch in the pins (minute 26:29 of your video), BUT unfortunately I am not able "rewire" them. • @frenchineer

    @frenchineer

    10 ай бұрын

    I found removing the pins difficult too! It took me a while. I think I ended up using one of the thin flat pin removers. I think the pins are held in by a little metal tab on either the top or the bottom. You may want to try to push the wire towards the connector while working to release the tab from the pin side, then try to pull the wire and pin out. Once you have one out, you can label it, and hopefully it will help you with the second one since you'll be able to see the tab that holds it in. I hope this helps a little!

    @frenchineer, How good are these units? My biggest concern is actual processing speeds and software security. Last thing i need is my phone to get hacked because of using some open source software. Im looking to upgrade my 1st gen XC90 and unfortunately these are the only units out there that fit on the middle console speaker as opposed to a double din replacement. also how does it interact with the OEM radio? does it work in tandem or does this unit act like an AUX audio source?

  • @frenchineer

    @frenchineer

    5 ай бұрын

    In terms of processing speed, I haven't noticed any issues. As far as security, my unit isn't connected to any network, and for Android Auto the radio is only used for the display and audio/microphone. I had no issues with the quality of the unit. For sound quality, that may depend what year your car is. Mine is an 06 and did not have an AUX input, so the harness I have bypasses the amplifier (the factory radio no longer works and the speakers are driven by the new unit). On later cars with the AUX input, my understanding is it that it ties in to the AUX system and uses the factory amplifier.

  • @ullarvastrik6601
    @ullarvastrik66019 ай бұрын

    Hi! So, the new screen/headunit is not using OEM amplifier? How is the sound quality, still powerful? What source you will have to select from OEM radio, to listen sound from new screen, for example youtube? Thanks in advance!

  • @frenchineer

    @frenchineer

    9 ай бұрын

    If you have the no AUX model, the amplifier is bypassed, but if you have AUX I believe you retain the factory amplifier. Without AUX the original radio is bypassed, so it should just stay off, with AUX I think you would need to use AUX input. The onboard amplifier for the new unit sounds good, but it may have a lower max volume. Unfortunately I was not able to compare the levels.

    Yes that's true! I think if you want to use an aftermarket amplifier you could connect to the speaker wires that come out of the amp (where my harness connected). Just keep in mind that if you have parking sensors you may want to add an extra speaker to connect to the factory amplifier so you can still hear the beeps.

    I don't have experience with aftermarket subwoofers, but it may be possible to use the RCA outputs from the head unit to send signal to the amp/sub. You can see the audio inputs and outputs on the product page to see if what you need is there.

    Hello I am considering buying an xc90. Could you delete the OEM unit without too much trouble. I see it as being quite large and obsolete. Maybe with a blanking panel or something, you could use that old space for USB ports or something else.

  • @frenchineer

    @frenchineer

    9 ай бұрын

    Unfortunately the OEM unit is interconnected with other systems in the car, so it does need to stay in place. When I turned on the ignition with the factory unit disconnected, it set off an airbag light on the dash that I had to reset.

    @@frenchineer hmm.. was there room in the dash where you could hide it - still connected? The space could be used for USB ports, 12v outlets, switches etc - as I would purchase an xc90 for overlanding and camping. I have a background in Japanese cars, pre-00s, so moving to later model European will have a learning curve. Cheers!

  • @frenchineer

    I think that would be tough since the HVAC and original radio are all in one housing. I guess it could be done but it seems like a pretty significant undertaking - though if you can go check one out in a junkyard you could probably get a better idea by pulling out the original radio and checking the available space. Since you're looking for something for overlanding, are you also considering vehicles with 4x4?

    Thank you! The install should be very similar, there is a speaker or a panel instead of the GPS screen on your car. My radio came with two harnesses, and I think one was for cars without the amplifier. In that case, the connections would all be behind the original unit. If you are unsure, you could also take a look at what the connections look like behind your factory radio, and compare that to pictures in listings for this radio or other similar ones.

    Hi there, excellent ideo. I would not be able to install mine without watching it. I had to remove the pin for left speaker as well. I cannot get the canbus module workoing. The steering wheel buttons do not work. I also lost the parking sensors. Did you manage to setup the steering wheel buttons?

  • @frenchineer

    In my case the volume buttons worked without any setup, but no luck with next/previous track buttons when I use Android Auto. EDIT: I checked again and the next and previous buttons do work in Android though! I may need to see if there is a setting to pass the commands to Android Auto, but Volume and Track next/prev did work out of the box. Regarding the parking sensors, my car did not have them, but my understanding is that the sound goes through the factory amplifier. Because this radio requires you to bypass that, no sound from that system reaches the speakers after the install unfortunately.

    @@azingo67 I am thinking of a workaround on the parking sensors - based on which connector I put into the amplifier I can either have the old factory radio making the sound or the new head unit - so I will have the original speakers connected to the head unit and at the same time connect the output from amplifier to a new additional speaker (I will leave the legacy radio switches off and use this speaker for parking sensors only). Not sure, what to do with the canbus module, which is useless - the support on the aliexpress or from the producer is non-existent

  • @frenchineer

    @frenchineer

    Жыл бұрын

    I think the dedicated speaker for the parking system is a great idea! It would probably also allow you to use the factory radio if you had an issue and needed a backup. Regarding the CANbus module and support, that's very unfortunate... It seems like experiences can vary from one supplier to the next.

    Because you have a later model year, any radio you get should connect using the AUX system instead of bypassing the amplifier, so your parking sensors should continue to work. I'm not sure how the backup camera integrates though, so I recommend checking on some Volvo forums to see how others have done installs with factory backup cameras. To use both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, I recommend getting a CarKit/CarlinKit to use with the Autokit app the radio.

    It looks like for the 2007 XC70 there are dash kits and harnesses that would allow you to install a double DIN head unit (Metra is a reputable brand for the kits). You would have to choose a head unit with android auto/carplay capabilities. There may be some info here: www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=94578
