    This car was used in one of the most popular movies in India. I have been searching for it since 2009 and only recently came to know it was the Volvo XC90. Was very sad to know this look was discontinued, but it will always remain a dream car for me.

The ride is quiet. The sound system is beautiful. The seats are amazing. 6 months in, I’d say it’s a good product. Get one CPO if you can.

    I absolutely love this generation of the XC90, In my country these are very rare and very expensive because of high taxes, all of them were diesel except a handful of them in V8 specification of which only 1 was in my city, i got to ride in one once and it was passion red and was absolutely in love. I will at some point get an XC90, new ones however they cost the equivalent of $140k at my place with the D5 and the p2 generation are hard to come by but one day for sure.

Plus, I think that I have spotted one of these P2 Exec autos at a reasonable price (a few years older) NOW I know what to look for when I test drive it! Question, sir. They are not the most powerful but they have good low down torque and suit the car well. We got the T6 and the V8. I think we got the T5 but not sure but I don't think we got the 3.2. A shame you guys didn't get the D5 2.4 litre 5 cylinder diesel engine. These engine were quite bulletproof. The V8 XC90s are quite rare in the UK due to higher running costs (fuel and Vehicle Excise Duty). The split folding tailgate orignated in the Range Rover. That's where BMW got the idea from. They acquired the Rover Group (of which Land Rover was a part) in 1994 when the P38 was introduced so they had access to the Range Rover technology to develop the E53 X5.

    One thing to realize here is that the V8 engine was manufactured by Kawasaki. The Japanese do quite well with various engines as we all know, but it was SUPER HARD to work on…no room anywhere. The 2.5 L, five cylinder turbo was manufactured in Sweden by Volvo. It is a genuine Volvo powerplant and It’s bomb proof if you use synthetic oil and drive sensible. Well built engine (turbocharger is Japanese) The transmissions are another issue all together. The transmission that they put behind the five cylinder 2.5 turbo is made in Japan and it is amazing. The Aisin AW 55-51SN (think Toyota and Nissan) It’s probably the most durable transmission out of all that was used in the XC 90. It is the same transmission that Nissan used in their minivans back in the day and it’s very strong. The four-speed General Motors, that they put behind a 3.2 was a plagued and it was the demise of many xc90’s. I don’t know what Transmission they put behind a Kawasaki V8.

    I actually heard that the V8 was designed by Volvo and built by Yamaha (yeah, the same company that worked on many Toyota engines in the 2000's). And the V8s got an Aisin 6 speed automatic transmission.

    Volvo V8 valves don’t normally leak. The engine itself will usually need some oil leaks attended to at higher mileage but the engine itself is solid. Some techs are weary of working on this engine for some reason but maybe since I worked on these early in my career, I developed a familiarity and appreciation for this engine, so I was excited when a 2008 V8 XC90 came for sale in my budget, so I bought it. Just find a good mechanic and the P2 XC90 will take good care of you.

    Its really a shame you never got to experience the 2.4D/D5 engines. It suits the XC90 a lot. To be fair the 2.9 is a good engine but that gearbox….it has the same 0-60 mph time as the D5 version. If you want speed, get the V8. Just later versions where they fixed some design flaws. If you want maximum reliability and as new production date as possible - 3.2. Its goes kinda alright, fuel consumption is the same as the V8 but at least its even more reliable and if im not mistaken, it had the 6 speed Aisin which in itself is a huge plus.

    Question for the AWD owners, when you have get new tires or replaces tires on the XC90, do you need to change all four tires or just two?

  • @brembodream

    @brembodream

    2 жыл бұрын

    I have a XC90 T5 AWD, and the diameter should be the same, or the haldex will notice different speed and the AWD would have to compensate. I would concider not to change only one axel, but have all 4 tyres changed, and then rotate wheels for even wear.

  • @Supah_Duck

    @Supah_Duck

    Жыл бұрын

    2005 XC90 2.5T5 AWD here, and you'll find that the fronts wear slightly quicker than the rear, since the AWD is front-biased, as @BernonCars mentions, but in practice, you'll be replacing all four at roughly the same time. Here in Canada, I run Nitto 3-seasons on Touren rims, and switch to Motomaster winters on the OEM Volvo aluminum rims. Since I'm switching the tires twice a year, it's an opportunity to rotate the fronts to the back, and vice-versa, which definitely helps average out the wear. @brembodream 's advice on keeping diameter/sizing identical is crucial, and I would further suggest that you keep to the same brand/SKU of tire when replacing if you must do only two. I've always had to do all 4 when replacing: I usually get three years on average from each set, based on my heavy mileage and slightly more aggressive driving style. YMMV, obviously.

    @@BernonCars You right. I have a XC90 and doesn’t bather to tune this engine. I choose the 2.5T over D5 because its sounds better and quicker than the D5. V8 breakes itself to pieces due to balance shaft failure. Did get fixed i 2008 or 2009 though. So at least stay away from earlier V8 models. I used that money on preventive maintenance such as changing fluids all around because Volvo service program does not include transmission oil change, haldex oil change, steering servo hydraulic oil and not break fluid change either. Typical neglect of these leads to replacing brake master cylinder, load valve and calipers. Then transmission rebuild, servo pump failure and Haldex failure. Costly repairs because Volvo want to appeare cheap to service, and these fluids is all reccomended but not included in service program. At least here in europe. (I live in Oslo, Norway)

One walks in the streets where dogs (and humans) urinate and defecate, one may wear boots with black soles that mark floors and carpets, mechanics get in with dirty shoes etc. I experienced the same while working at Jaguar in the 80s, cars would arrive with the most wonderful thick pile floor mats. Yes T6 has bad transmission. If you use a XC90 for hauling heavy trailers, install a external cooler for the transmission. Especially important for D5, but these don’t have part number for it. You can use V8 external oil cooler. T5 AWD is reccognized as the most relaible drive train. A really good deal can be a were good deal, because the 2006 model has all the tech updates such as haldex gen 3 and the D5 has the 185hk in 2006 as well
