Installing a fish finder on the Hobie passport 10.5' (through-hull transducer)

If your kayak does not have a transducer cavity, and you don't want to use a transducer arm that can get in your way, then this is the best way I've found to install one. You won't get an accurate reading on water temp but it will be close and you can get that using other means. I did this on my first fishing kayak and it worked fine, as long as you don't store or transport the kayak upside down, which over time may cause the tape to come loose.

Interesting Peter, I didn’t know that the passport doesn’t have a transducer mount or wire ports built in. Thanks for showing us how you got around that!

Yeah the smaller passport 10.5’ doesn’t have it but the 12’ one does have the cavity for the transducer. Definitely not ideal but it works. If I were to buy another kayak and got the passport I would get the 12’ though so that I could install a side scan transducer.

I cannot believe that you didn't take an extra second or two to deburr the hole you drilled! Unbelievable! AND you installed the through-hull mount UPSIDEDOWN!

Hi Pete, I made a small well with the duct seal that collects the water and usually gives me a temp reading. My similar Passport installation has been bulletproof for more than a year.

That's really smart, I think the sensor is that little silver circle on the back bottom of it. The temp reading is usually pretty close, within a few degrees so I don't mind too much. Great to hear that its still working for you too, you taped it down and thats it?

Nice job Peter. I attempted to make a similar video, same boat, however my camera angles were off !!! So the footage was scrapped ! You think that "mud" will hold a battery?

Thanks Crabbin! Ah man, yea the camera angles are tough on these types of videos, especially difficult to get video inside the hull, but I hope it helps some people out. Did you also do the duct seal thing on yours? I think its best to have the battery inside a watertight container of some kind, then you can secure it however you want but the key is really making sure the connections wont get wet, and then using a dielectric grease of some kind to have extra protection.

What size of drill is that? My passport 10.5 always collect water inside. does yours too?

the hole diameter? I'm almost positive its 1.25" but I can double check...I do get water on the inside of the hull but not that much. I just always have a car sponge in the hull that I try to sponge out the little bit at the end of the outing. My hobie compass which has a front hatch gets much more water in it than this passport. So I think every hole you make increases the chances of water getting in but the front hatches seem to be where the most gets in. I also just believe that is the nature of these kayaks, they are not water tight, no matter how hard to you there will always be a little water that gets in so I just don't store anything in the hull that cant get wet and just go with it, theyr still great fishing platforms!

@@user-xf1fm8rb7i yea as long as it’s a typical sonar transducer it will go through a plastic hull as long as it’s below the water line. Side scan transducers need to be submerged below the hull bc they sent the signal out to the side but typical down sonar you will be fine. It will work

I think you can fish from any kayak really as it all depends on the weather conditions and tide/waves. Would I take this kayak into the Atlantic ocean? probably not. But I also don't have a very high risk tolerance for going out in the kayak in bad weather. I mainly fish in the long island sound which is much more protected and I make sure the wind is minimal. I'm sure there are people that would take it out in the ocean and you certainly could, but the weather window would have to be perfect.
