Drilling holes/wiring Garmin transducer & fish finder for 2021 Hobie Compass kayak

It's always a bit daunting to drill holes in a kayak, especially one that's brand new. However, with sit-on-top kayaks in general, as long as you are drilling above where the water line will be, you shouldn't have any issues with minimal sealing/gaskets to prevent over splash from getting in the hull. And once you've overcome the initial fear of doing it the first time, its not that bad to do it again.
In this video, I show you how I drilled/installed the 2 ports for the transducer and fish-finder, and the wiring that connects them to each other and to a battery (power source) on my new Hobie compass 2021 kayak.

This is the most detailed/helpful video I have found on doing this. I’m finally gonna install a unit on mine, where can I find those plugs you run the cables in? Or what are they called?

Thanks man! I’m so happy to hear that and I hope it works out for you, def worth it I feel. Those plugs came with the hobie compass and they label them compass small parts but I found them online called the “through-hull wiring kit”. Here’s a link: www.outdoorplay.com/hobie-thru-hull-wiring-kit?gclid=Cj0KCQiAieWOBhCYARIsANcOw0zdKe_YrFBtK8LCdgOIOFSD9KiDiH86B1CtmsfNepijX47kQnfLUKMaAkrwEALw_wcB

@@hookset_em5255 ah man that’s lame. I’m sorry I didn’t realize they wouldnt come with the gasket. I think the gasket is important, I would go to a local hardware store and ask for one. It’s pretty common I think for like hose attachments. Should be 1” to 1 1/4” like this: www.supplyhouse.com/Viega-15549-1-1-4-EPDM-Flat-Gasket?gclid=Cj0KCQiAosmPBhCPARIsAHOen-PffyIDdZn9bNzimiqggXN3lWlVOwrMBGbvmkhb0NXAKiMWRpsaTlEaAtwEEALw_wcB

thanks, Yes these ones came with my hobie compass in a bad of "small parts" but you can buy them online: amzn.to/3QwPoty I think wilderness systems has a cheaper kit thats about $25 and does the same thing basically. search: wilderness system through hull wiring kit kayak

So nothing wrong with having the hole in that location for the transducer wire, especially since it’s easier to reach. But it should go on the firewall (side, not top) based on the manual and new design. It was a pain to try to get an explanation on it since there were no videos on the install.

I didn't even think about putting it there but that's prob a better idea since it's a vertical face, then there's less chance of water getting in probably as opposed to a flat or horizontal surface like the way i did it. But my location is at least in the raised area of those drain indents so I'm not too worried.

@@PeterRanieriII yeah! It won’t be an issue at all! I fault Hobie for making the instructions unclear and providing a 1.5 inch thru hole plug and a 2 inch, when the instructions say use two 2 inch thru hole plugs. All in all, you’ll be just fine!!

The manual says two 1 3/8 inch(three way plug) holes, one on the firewall(didn't say it top or side) and one on the side. However, the kit only provides one 1 inch single-way plug and one three-way. This a known issue of their assembly line and should have been fixed already. I'm debating whether to rig it on the firewall or just do like you did(all other models and previous years compass).

@@xuanzhang8808 Yea its crazy, I feel like hobie is learning as they go as much as we are! Like Sunny mentioned, it may be a little tough to maneuver the cables and screw on the piece from the inside if you do it on the side of the firewall but that is the way Hobie says it should be done. All I can say is I'm happy with the way I did it under the seat, no real problem to report as of yet.

I just bought a 2021 Compass. What is the bungee cord that is between the one for the seat and the round hatch? I see mine has the 2 clips but it did not come with any bungee there. Can you tell me what that is for?

Great question. I’m surprised it didn’t come with yours, The guy at the shop where I bought it told me it’s for grabbing the mirage drive pedals if you want the fins to be held in the horizontal position. I’ve never used it for that purpose, but I haven’t taken it off bc sometimes it’ll hold my fish fisher mount or something else down during transport

@@PeterRanieriII I will be doing the exact same install this week on mine. I see the suggestion of putting the transducer hole on the vertical firewall but how could you possibly reach that far back to screw the backside bracket in? It seems unreachable? Hobie is not very good about explaining things that are basic upgrades most customers do.

Also, my dealer installed the rectangular hatch so I assume they removed my bungee and then never put it back. I wouldn't use it so if the need arises I will just use one of my own. Thanks for your reply. VERY helpful video. It is what I am using to follow my fish finder install.

@@allenuconn correct, that's why I didn't even think to put it back there, I really don't think Hobie has thought this all through yet. Up to you where to put it but I will just say that I haven't found any issue where I put mine so far, and I think in general, water gets in more around the hatches than these smaller holes.
