Install Windows 11 On 13 Year Old PC Hardware

Install Windows 11 On 13 Year Old PC Hardware
Today we are attempting to install Windows 11 on a very old Dell Studio 540 which was released in April 28th 2009. So yes, pretty old system. Will it install and run? So why are we doing this? to see if its possible to run Windows 11 on a non TPM system and see if it updates. This is a 13 year old computer running DDR2 . Big Thanks to Darknido for making this video possible.

Good video! The only way I could see Microsoft blocking manual updates is through licensing like what they did with the esu updates for Windows 7. Even though users maybe able to bypass the restrictions Microsoft will continue to patch the loopholes with every update and it could end up being a never ending game if they do go in that direction.

I used microsoft's 2nd offical method to upgrade unsupported hardware (which was pretty easy). For me it worked well (because it had 4GB RAM), but if you got 2GB RAM total, it will not run Windows 11. You could however buy RAM to add/replace, but however, not everyone is real tech savvy and you can't always upgrade certain components if your computer is soldered in (making it unupgradable). If this were all the case, you unfortunately gotta get a new PC, but buy one that's 'reasonable'.

I do understand that they no longer wish to support older hardware and that it is costly to do so. But there is a line of what exactly is too old to continually support within reason. And within that statement if your system meets every minimal requirement, (with exception of processor type) it should still be allowed. My HP laptop meets every requirement except the AMD A-8 APU. I personally believe this is a farce! Yet my HP all in one PC with a Intel Celeron processor (older) passes with flying colors. You have obviously demonstrated that much older systems can run windows 11. Too many people just can't afford (currently) to just go get a new system. This is where the travesty lies, but for some reason Microsoft is being hell bent & forceful on this issue. A reason only they know and apparently have some sort of an agenda. Who knows what the future holds, things are ever changing. In any case old or older systems can be repurposed into other things or uses. They can be donated to schools for educational purposes, repurposed as a server or NAS system or you can keep as is with your useful software/ programs offline. You can even install a different OS, I hear Google is coming out with a new OS I believe called flex. So there are options, anything to keep from creating such E waste. One thing we do know is that Microsoft has never been good with keeping their word or even being honest. We know that they always push incomplete operating systems through the gate and fix along the way. They always change their mind, like making up the rules as they go along. Either from lack of interest or complaints as it was with 8. Everything lies on time and with the users.

After all that, I still could not install Windows 11 when it was released, but your video does offer me help and at last I can see a way forward, but, even if I did upgrade to Windows 11 (as I am tempted to do), surely it would only be a cosmetic change in appearance? It would be interesting to show a performance comparison between 10 and 11 on that computer. For older computers you get better performance with 10. You'll also find that many features of 11 aren't available because the hardware doesn't support them. I've been running 11 on a Q8200 since day 1, but I find myself using 10 most of the time. From what I've seen online, I believe a Core 2 Duo is the lowest one can go with 11.

EXCEPT... features like CORE ISOLATION which is a security feature hammer older CPU's that don't have a dedicated section to accelerate this. This is the REASON that older CPU's are being dropped. And most tasks are the SAME performance in Windows 11 vs 10 on older CPU's if Core Isolation is disabled. An easy check of CPU performance is to run CPU-Z and compare multi and single-thread scores between 10 and 11. And run any benchmark such as TIMESPY to check the GPU score. (I'm not counting File Manager/explorer which is a work in process. I'm talking about programs in general.)

By the way, I have a couple of DELL Optiplex 7010 PC's released in 2012 I refurbish for resale. Part of this process I update the bios. LOL. This is exactly my current computer except not a Dell but one I built, DIY. My bios date is almost the same 6-18-2009. I have the socket 775 Core2Duo overclocked at 3.00 Mhz with 8 gigs of DDR2. Brian is absolutely correct when he says how snappy Windows 11 is on an old 13 year old computer. That's how mine is, as well. I haven't had the need to part with it yet and is why I'm still using it.

Hi, I just watched your video for upgrade to Windows 11, clean install. I have the studio 540 Legacy BiOS, that is why I watched your video. My question is the BIOS firmware 1.1.3 update for this Dell that I wanted to do. I did not know about this firmware - till last year (2021) and it would not load in because my system was already running with Windows 10. Is there a way to get the firmware installed now? Oh - I did the Windows 11 update, in January 2022. Everything is working great for me using Windows 11. I just wanted to get firmware updated and then reinstall Windows 11 with a Clean Install. I want to keep this computer going for a few years more. Thanks Alden Out -

I've installed 11 on 5 2009 era HPs I recently bought for 25 bucks each. All I did was DL the ISO directly from MS, run it through Rufus. open up the files and delete all the TPM files on it. [Look up on other KZreads for that process]. I then clicked "setup" and upgraded my Win 10. No TPM hardware check and runs the setup normally. You have the option to keep all files or clean install. I used the keep files function and therefore didn't have to go through all the PITA initial setup. MY Classic Shell startup was even detected. So far all updates have been installed normally. It works just fine, as did Win 10 on my old computers. Also installed it the same way on a 20 YO Compac laptop with no problems. Also didn't need to reinstall any apps. They all work with the former settings even included.

The only drawback that I have noticed is some software does not install due to the age of the iGPU drivers. I’m not sure if trying to force a random one based on the hardware ID is a good idea either. On another note I would gut that 540, it appears to have a standard ATX layout.

Hi, I had a problem installing it from my usb stick, so I copied the iso to a directory on another hard drive on the pc and install it from there. I had to disable 'user account control' before installation. You need to turn off access to internet before installation (type UAC in search bar, open and adjust to 'never notify') and while the install is checking for updates at the start of the process, then switch it on again as soon as the update check is finished and it installed fine. Hope that helps.
