Inside the control room: turning NFL football into primetime television
Ғылым және технология
The NFL's most exciting game isn't played on the field. It happens behind the scenes, as hundreds of cast and crew come together to turn a football game into a football broadcast, the show hundred of millions of viewers see every week. When the New England Patriots played the New Orleans Saints, we saw Fox make it happen.

This behind the scenes game is far more interesting than the game going on down on the field.

Exactly why I'm getting into sports videography. It'll provide adrenaline to catch all the action, sure there's pressure, but it'll be a great pressure

Whenever I'm invited to a football party, I just listen to the audio mix and watch the graphics to keep myself entertained.

You're the guy who need to join them.
"We'd hate to have a real job, sitting behind the desk all day" What you do guys is a real job, you love it and it's something exciting, challenging, creative, and useful. Thumbs up, I had no idea it's this complicated to capture the match, probably it's same with soccer, F1, olympic games and alike.
The sound guy mix 5.1 surround without the need of a headphone! insane listening to chaos 8 tracks at the same time and mix with feel!

You wouldn't be able to accurately hear the broadcast through a headphone. Incredible multitasking... WOW!

Hayden Allred I feel dumb writing that comment 2 years ago. After all this is vice. There was some acting and promotion element it. I was overwhelmed by vice's editing at that moment, and my logic can't function well right after watching it. After reading more and more vice. I realize how fake they were, I didn't mean they are as bad as fox. But their storytelling skill really can fool u some time In short, I realized it's a normal skill to listen on headphone and multitask.

Not to mention the Producer, the Director, Assoc. Director at the SAME time!
I'm watching this again 8 years later, and I think it's one of the more well produced behind-the-scenes documentary of a live broadcast team.

+arsquared As a replay operator, how much time do you have to put together a replay footage? And, how do you edit the footage to get exactly the shot you want and the look you want?
@nbd712
6 жыл бұрын
Not a replay op, but an engineer. You have no time to edit it. You either have it or you don't. In the video they talk about a producer asking who has the shot and relays that to the director. Once the director calls that they're going to you, you have to cue it up for playback.
Man... this makes me miss working in live TV so much.

I love watching professional people do their job. You can tell they are very smart and experienced.
This is why I love The Verge. Great content, beautiful camera work, top notch editing and perfect sounds. Please make this "Behind the scenes" a regular series like Small Empires. People only see the end result and it's fascinating to see all the work and effort put into it.
Thanks Verge for bringing this to us, really appreciate these in depth specials...
This is awesome! Big part of the reason I like NFL so much, this job is done with cutting edge tech and extremely skilled operators that know how to deliver the best coverage! Thanks Verge!

This video is great and shows what I do for a living and how much time and hard work we put in putting together a sport show for viewers to see and at times can be stressful but love every minute of it!
As a massive fan of all things tech, the verge and football I think this was my favorite feature yet! Amazing!
I am blown away about all the stuff that goes on behind the scenes producing a live sports event for broadcast. They make it look so seamless. A lot of cool technology going on there. Thanks for sharing this behind the scenes look.
The most heartwarming and inspiring team ends up being the audio and video guys, shouts outtt

Oh my gosh I want a job like this. I do the most basic stuff possible with camera switching and output stuff at my church, but I love it. This is so cool
Great Video Guys! Can You do one about the NBA control room?
Great job verge team. Great film.
This is brilliant!
Thanks for giving some of us a peek inside (area 51 !) to see and hear the guys and gals doing their great jobs for live TV. And to see how that overhead camera actually works during a game, very interesting and informative. Paul
What a fantastic video. The game they were there for was an incredible comeback win for the Patriots, and one of two games that day in Massachusetts. Later that night, 30 miles north in Boston, the Red Sox had their own miraculous comeback against the Tigers. Whats amazing to think about is FOX had to have the same kind of resources at Fenway too. Goes to show how complex sports broadcasting is.
You guys are freaking artists.
this is the reason why I watch The Verge is because of it's content. (written/video)I believe in it
What an insanely awesome video! I work in (live) broadcast television in The Netherlands. Which is a much smaller market and this smaller productions, money wise. That makes this video GREAT to watch. To see what my work would be like in a bigger country ;) lol
Great job guys.
Love this!

Awesome video!
Really sweet video. Interesting.
you guys are having fun
Love the Pong overlay on the program output at 4:47 - 4:50. Is that an Easter egg that was deliberately put in, or was it just a test pattern that they were using on the day?

Essentially it’s so you’re feeding a known, moving video rather than a potential frozen frame due to issues
The sound guy is the MVP. Never seen anything quite like it tbh.
Great video.
I just accepted a job for an MLB team getting back into the control room after 5 years behind a desk… the pay isn’t great at the level I’m going in, and the hours aren’t guaranteed, but after sitting behind a desk for 5 years I can say I’d rather scrape by in the control room than scrape by at a desk. I’m excited to go back into that world and it’s going to be worth it, I know it.
I would love to do this job. I took broadcast media in high school! :)
I used to do stuff like this and our cameras had to all be remote controlled and we’d run cables really far from each cam into the control room and it was stressful having delay in controlling the pan and tilt of each cam, but dang this seems way more stressful but fun!
Can you do a F1 version? I love this!
Oh dang! I want to see a modern one now. This is crazy!
Seriously amazing to think that tens of millions of people are listening to the audio work of ONE GUY for like 3+ hours straight. What other musician can make that claim?
Fascinating
Obrigado Gaveta
