Inside America's Billion Dollar Divorce Industry

Ойын-сауық

There are one million divorces in the United States every year-that's one every 36 seconds, nearly 2,400 per day, and 16,800 per week. It's hardly surprising, then, that the divorce industry is worth a whopping $50 billion annually-that's a hell of lot of heartbreak.
In the latest episode of our series on the love industries, we delve into the growing industry offering people alternative ways to split. In the divorce capital of the world, New York City, we explore the industries making heartbreak bearable and learn that-whether it's divorce merchandise, "conscious uncoupling," or "reverse-wedding" planning-people's attitudes toward the sanctity of marriage are changing, while Americans in particular are adopting new-age rituals as a way to call time on their relationships.

I think most of your dislikes came from just the first 2 minutes XD Valuable snapshots of this little-known world so I like it, but calling these "new age" seems like a forced low-blow against any actual new age type group. Consider the opening soundbite about love as a chemical - which is how cynics who don't know anything about counseling method speak of emotions and human motivations. In "New Age" groups like holistic counseling one sees the leading edge of knowledge on how to do effective CBT or other ways of transforming human emotional patterns: we have the better tools and knowledge on the subject compared to someone with the anti-new-age "we are nothing but chemicals" mindset. We know pharmacology, but we also know that practical knowledge of humanistic counseling and mapping out a person's implcit beliefs is far more relevant to issues of love. New Age, Progressive, Integral, Holistic... these are words don't deserve the cyncism people direct at them after they learn about some oddball groups and then stereotype everything that simply reminds them of those groups. We "Holistic/New Agers" tolerate the strange folks because we are learning compassion and confidence that both their social group and the whole living system of human society will slowly continue to learn better critical thinking skills and emotional awareness, and continue self-actualizing in the long term. Happy marriges will certainly increase in proportion to the rate that practices of self knowing (i.e. psychological counseling and meditation) become a facet of mainstream life.

***** The most people get married not because they love each other, they get married because they like each other and maybe sex is good. It's like buying a car. You like it for couple of years and then you get bored and wish some changes. You can't change your loved one, so you get divorced. Love is about trusting each other, be for each other no matter what, but the most people don't care about their partner.

I hate how they/We used celebrities as examples for relationships. If anything celebrity relationships are as far from normal as possible. The average couple in America doesn’t live their life infront of the camera, constantly being followed and harassed or talked about in the news and magazines. The gossip in Hollywood and all the hate from fans, all those things impact relationships and it’s no wonder why celebrities don’t last long in them. That’s not in any way shape or form how we, the average, should view relationships or how we should strive to be. All that matters is how you choose to love, not how the Kardashians get married and divorced every few years or so. Relationships to me should be more private than public. Not everyone needs to know EVERYTHING about you and your boo, cause when everyone knows everything it’s not personal.

I don't blame this lawyer or his antics. The real issue is media transparency. Too often we are sold the happily ever after disney bullshit without a disclaimer attached. Relations are hard. Very hard, and piss offish. Women are annoying, selfish, dependent and plain stupid at times, but so are men. If you want to make a relationship work, honesty, sacrifice, understanding and patience are prerequisites. Also don't rush into anything, similarly don't rush out.

Divorces don’t have to be all bad, my mum and dad were together for 35 years but they one day decided they didn’t want to live together anymore, my dad moved out and my mum, me and brother got a house. My mum and dad still are good friends, my dad regularly helps me, my mum and brother with anything he can. I know it can sometimes go horribly but just thought I’d at least put a good one out 😊👌 Id like to point out I’m 20 and they were very open about the whole divorce bc they didn’t have a bad reason about it, they both seemed a lot happier after too ❤️

I don't know if it's the same in all countries, but here in Australia if you have been even living with a partner in a de facto relationship for 6 months and break up, they are entitled to take half of your ex-partners stuff. It's sick!! Some people are out there doing this constantly to people, shacking up with them then taking them to the cleaners. And this isn't just women who are doing this. There are men finding women who are doing well (have a house they own, have a job, have a car) to do this to. But that is the thing. We should be making sure to find partners who we can love and trust the rest of our lives, or at least when you go your separate ways you both aren't trying to exploit each other.

No the divorce rate is so high because of the narcissistic trends that have been going on since the Baby Boomers started getting married. Everyone is me me me and not willing to work or deal with some hardships to keep their marriages. First sign of a problem and they want a divorce.... But America by whole is narcissistic country.
