Inside a Mid-Century Modern House Built on the Edge Of a Forest (House Tour)
Ойын-сауық
Merricks House is a mid-century modern home that presents a bold response to a rural site in Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula - a coastal, countryside oasis. Sitting on the edge of a forest, Aktis Architects works alongside the challenges presented by the site and a linear arrangement of spaces, creating an equally robust yet elegant farm home that connects and contrasts the quintessential Australian landscape it sits within. Built for the Director of Lexicon Constructions, the brief called for a mid-century modern family house that was linear in form and worked to encapsulate a strong sense of togetherness.
Approaching the mid-century modern home, one is met with a modest elevation composed of two raking roofs, each perched above a masonry box. A gravel driveway meanders through dense planting to arrive at a porte cochère lined with vertical timber cladding. The house tour reveals a linear arrangement of spaces inside, so the need for circulation areas and corridors is redundant. The concrete frame structure is defined by a geometric architecture, whilst circular windows contrast the geometry of the home and add a sense of playfulness.
The outdoors becomes part of the interior design of the home. Rooms are built to flow into each other, and the natural surrounds maintain a constant presence in the home’s interior, thanks to a continuous glass wall. Landscaping is equally considered, with native plants dominating and complementing the timber façade. Whilst being south-facing, northern lighting enters the home through skylights, a courtyard and shadows from the pool, whilst the south-facing light gives a beautiful orange glow.
In line with its mid-century modern approach, Merricks House is comprised of raw materiality, a pared-back palette with minimal decor and applied finishes throughout. Inside, there is a distinct lack of plastered or painted finishing, and timber is used generously for wall linings and kitchen and bedroom joinery in juxtaposition to the burnished concrete floors. The simple detailing and preference for natural materials imbue the home with a warm, cosy feeling.
A mid-century modern home that is captivating and immersive, Merricks House presents confident architecture. The home harnesses the benefits of its site and landscape whilst maintaining a sense of wonder in its monumental scale.

My guess: Elaheh Mohammed (architect) does the work, and Bruce Katsipidis (director) takes the credit.
I caught myself that sometimes I don't even care about the house itself - I just watch these videos for the beautiful shots and soothing music to contemplate 😅

Well it's not hard to believe you, since this house in particular has the very taste of death. If it's not for the beautiful shots of nature or soothing songs, we'll be having a hard time between choosing to rip our eyes out or use them to cry instead.

Loved the owner’s comment about being “scarred” from the white plasterboard 😂 It’s so refreshing when seeing architects and designers return to natural, rugged, warm materials. Stunning home & property.
The 911 and the house. Guy is living the dream.
I like how this house feels rural and yet modern and sophisticated. There is nothing out of place here like a ton of marble (except for the kitchen a bit) or something luxurious that doesn't fit with the vibe of the place. Yet, the architecture is very sophisticated with that linear design and separated places flowing from one to another with the views always visible. I totally get what the owner and the architects were trying to achieve here.

This is proper modernism. Warm, organic and stunningly beautiful. Classic and current at the same time . Cheers from the States
This is the life. I don’t need the biggest house in the world. I just want a well designed space to live in with my family and a beautiful lifestyle.
Excellent material's choice. Marvelous mid century tribute.
I'd love to also hear from the lead engineer on the project, to hear about how they tackled the challenges of the land and the building process. It would make the video a bit more insightful. Lovely video as always! Thanks!

Agree but that video would be more about construction rather than architecture 🤷🏻♀️
Really lovely home. The simplicity of the palate and integrity of materials makes the home soothing and effortless. Well done.
Finally a project that light up beautiful in the interior space. I can finally see everything unlike other super dark and ghost house of local project. Good job on this one !!! FOR MAKING THE VIEWER CAN SEE THE INTERIOR.
This House is Absolutely Magnificent!
Really cool home. I love the back part of the house, especially.
The house has lots of charm but I just love what they did with the garden.
my dream is to have a home with nothing but natural strong materials- this is beautiful
Absolutely stunning!
The play on geometric shapes is epic. Great job!
Love it so much!
well done! simple, strong form, men's materials and perfect combo with 930
Very bright and interesting content!💕
beautifully built house, great use of material , i love it

Maybe nice to look at, but compared to traditional framed construction, blockwork is more expensive, environmentally unfriendly, a terrible insulator and can present health issues. All of that glazing would have to be double glazed, which would cost a bomb.. I can’t see any form of decals (safety markings) on the glazing, which is not compliant.. just form over function
Congratulations, beautiful place, architecture and interior
I love the materials and the round windows
Wow. Just wow.
Stunning
And the classic 911 in the entrance hall... fantastic!
Beautiful house! Magnificent
Absolute stunner
Past and present.... Useing what you had.....just chill vive ! I would call this house..."Earth"..😊 Love it....❤

So beautiful besides the forest 🌳🦚✨
Love all the open space, nowhere for spiders to hide.
Lovely.
I would need all the nature to mitigate the anxiety from the bare besser block. It's in every state building in Aus since childhood. Maybe I'm a tasteless caveman. Everything else absolutely rules and nice vid.
Miss Elaheh, where would i find a coat like that please, it's exquisite.
Absolute, lasting, perfection. It should be an art installation called “Levitate”. Subscribed.

I like the building. But is it just the filming, or is it a bit dark inside?
Not really a fan of the exposed bricks, but the rest is nice! Also enjoyed the rain, something I haven' t seen in the places where I live recently.

The concrete blocks in the interior somewhat ruin the warm, homey vibe for me. Other than that, this was beautifully architected to highlight the peaceful Merricks countryside. Well done.
You know you’ve made it when you have peacocks in your yard. Lol.
Gorgeous. p.s. I have never loved pizza so much, that I would build a pizza oven.
It’s like Prisoner: Cell Block H, meets Risky Business vibe. ✌🏼
It looks warm and inviting. Design invokes interest and stunningly built.

Honest natural modern rural house....
i just cant imagine kids playing in a space like this - no heart or warmth.
Well-built house & 911 that's complete
Most of these comments are so sad and bitter. I sat here and watched the whole video and it put a smile on my face. All I saw was 3 people very happy and proud to showcase their work, and for Merrick, his home. Then I came to the comments only to see the majority of people complaining about arbitrary things. "Oh this house doesnt look good to me so the owner must be depressed and suicidal". "Oh the owner has no class" ... Live and let live people

From the perspective an Architecture YES! People can be inspired by this art but, Can all middle-class people afford it? NO It goes the same with Minimalistic designs... People should spend much more than usual on it But in my heart as a Machinist I always enjoy watching this Builds @@DecoratewithAtefeh
The interior gives me a “fancy prison” vibe with the what looks like cinder block walls, narrow halls and hard angles. The bathroom showers remind me of the communal ones you see in prison or sports movies. The whole thing looks very uncomfortable and cold.

Concrete blocks are a cheap construction material that works well with mid century or modern homes.

I agree. Not to mention how cold it must get along with the giant windows. Our home is from the fifties and is completely built from blocks as well and I can't stand the look. I want to cover it up somehow.
Needs a sculpture !

The birds? Can somebody explain the birds? What are they....pets, local wildlife (free range)???

Do you like Wabi sabi? I think you can get a similar feel by using a paint color that is calming, storing away clutter and installing bigger windows even if it’s just in your living room with the floor to ceiling sheers. Start a board with images that you like and you may be surprised how you eventually get there. It may not be grand but you can get the same feeling. Good luck.
Let her speak! It’s her work too.
Why all the slow motion?!?
富豪😊
No me gustan los materiales elegidos. No los encuentro interesantes. La casa tiene un diseño agradable pero el conjunto no me resulta acogedor.
looks cold
I cant agree with exposed blocks, makes spaces look institutional. The small rooms look like an upscale prison cell

I’m having a problem agreeing with the dialect. Aesthetically it doesn’t fit to the content.
Lol would have been nice to hear Elaheh thoughts about the Design process
wait is this john wick's house?
not sure what about this industrial look feels "hommie" to people. There are elements but all in all a normal house is more relaxing than these boxes.
Was that Zaha Hadid wearing an Issey Miyake dress?
It's very nice but I don't like the exposed brick used in most of the house. It introduces an element of brutalism that I find very off-putting.
This house is for millionaires that love that midcentury/prison aesthetics.
This is straight outta a rich millionaire thriller murder movie
I watch this because i see Porsche..and that's it
I like it, but it needs color.

What kind of life is this sir? I from india. Please adopt me. I can be your house dog
What exactly is Mid-Century about this massive vault like home? All the rooms are separated and there is no real flow from room to room or use of cheap materials. It just seems to have cinder blocks and massive metal beams. It's got a facade like Le Corbusier's buildings, but with none of the guided flow or green interior spaces. It's more brutalist than Mid-Century.
Great basic ideas, but about the circular windows, Henry Cameron says "What possessed you?"
Like the Porsche the house looks more like an artpiece with it´s sophisticated exterior, interior and furniture design choices. Although I prefer tidy living spaces this one looks almost like no one is living there like in this shot 1:55

well it is a holiday home, would rarely be used.
Architects have such nice jobs. Just draw some bs lines "make it artsy" and let other people do the building. I know alot of them .... maybe 1 out of 100 has skills....
It's sad that you don't translate subtitles into Russian
Porsche advertising
I mean it's very cool and all but I dont feel like this is a good family home tbh
Kind of really weird to just have the architect sitting there and all you hear from her is "my name is elaheh mohamed ..." and that's it. Was that the purpose of her presence there? That leaves me with lots of questions. But anyway, the house looks really well thought out.
porsche...
