Inside a Magical Restored House Originally Built In The 1960s (House Tour)
Ойын-сауық
Though Moore House was originally designed by Craig Ellwood in 1965, the newly restored house by Woods + Dangaran is a respectful design that enhances its rich history for both the owners and the wider Los Angeles architectural community. However, once owned by a local band that left it in disrepair, the home needed a complete renovation of both exterior and interior design. Tasked with this challenge, Woods + Dangaran has infused contemporary design methods that restore the midcentury home’s character in a modern light. As the architect and interior designer, Woods + Dangaran were able to save the home through a thoughtful and delicate renovation. From the street, the finished design of the restored house appears above the carport and unfolds in a rectangular form, where the majority of the original structural and interior elements have been kept.
Throughout the restored house, two of the main kept character elements are seen in the two bookends of the original home. The first bookend holds the new fireplace, which is maintained in both its original proportion and location and modernised with a patinaed brass that wraps around it. The second is a galley kitchen that allows for more functional space within the restored house. Additionally, the original, white-painted drywalls are upgraded to a Burmese teak panel and, to showcase a consistency through the interior design, the hardwood flooring is the same Burmese teak finished in a similar proportion and layout as the original home.
As the owners wanted the contemporary design to play on the high contrast of Moore House’s original form, Woods + Dangaran employed marble and stones throughout the home. Additionally, a tile splashback in the kitchen acts as both an art installation and a link to the small porcelain tiles used in other areas of the restored house. Furthermore, the interior plumbing fixtures, door hardware and detailing have metal inlays that are all lacquered brass and will patina over time to be more consistent with the home’s original design. However, to reduce the amount of attention paid to permanent materials, Woods + Dangaran places attention upon the home’s drapery, furnishings, rugs and textiles found throughout the interior design.
Built into the hillside of Los Angeles, the home’s landscape is lifted up from the city and given its own private oasis, with gardens to retreat to and a pool to enjoy. Adding to the sanctuary-inspired yard - and as requested by the owners - is the original koi pond that was kept and restored to complement the gardens and lead to the newly built pool. Often thought of as an original part of Moore House, the pool is a new addition that has been built with concrete masonry units that were found on the foundation of the original home. Wanting to respect the history of Moore House, Woods + Dangaran stays respectful to Craig Ellwood’s design whilst also giving its owners an iconic midcentury home that empowers the history of Los Angeles architecture.

A great example of restoration and thought addition (to the interiors and the pool). It looks holistic and in good taste. Wood interiors work really well with that midcentury style.
Love this. Showing so much respect for the original property. A home for life, living and for the future. Timeless. Elegant and thoughtful. Thank you. One of the best on the channel.
The architects must be so proud, this house is amazing.
I always have a soft spot for mid century modern houses.. this is an incredible project.. I love the mix of the original with the new restoration as if it’s always been that way.. ❤️

We agree!
I think this is the most beautiful house I have seen you guys tour😊❤
What a beautiful space. I love the greenery visible out of every window.
Fantastic restoration. I also enjoy the simple calm explanation by the architect. No tired cliché jargon so many architects think they need to throw out.
My dad was an iconoclast designer of iconic mid century homes. Love this work!

I am just curious: did you follow in his footstep and became an architect aswell? I would be so proud if my father had designed this house. Greetings from Camilla in Denmark

what's iconoclast about what we've just seen? It's utterly conformist, they've been doing the exact same thing for sixty years.
That's a thing of beauty. The teak and brass components might be my favourite.
Wow. The backslash is gorgeous, along with all the brass detailing. Adore the high contrast, and the warmth of the wood. Also, the greenery and clean feel. OK, I love it all.

Spectacular house. Love that Sticky Fingers is seen spinning on the record player but overlaid with spa music because of Local Project vibe consistency and copyright 😂
I'd love to know which band had an Ellwood as their party house!!! Brilliant restoration. Classic but contemporary finishes and it's so organic and warm. It's a beautiful home.
I love the design...simple & comfy...look clean but warm to be life in 😊😊😊
Now this is a house design that I can get behind. I am definitely building one like this possibly within the next year for sure. Beautiful house.
This is my home now. I noticed a lot of Dwr Furniture. Everything matches this vibe of teak. So nice.
GEORGEOUS AND THOUGHTFUL!!!!! BRAVO
I've watched this 4 times already, love this design. It's perfect in it's simplicity and flow. I think i love the teak the best, you're surrounded by it. And i love how wild the landscaping looks.
Wonderful property. Can’t even imagine how much it must cost given its location. Would’ve been nice to see some “before” pics.

It would have been nice to see a few before photos since the key seems to be that it's been restored. Lucky people who got to do the before and after walk through.

agreed! but if you google Craig Ellwood Moore house, you can still see the real estate listing from 2018, with pictures and the asking price of 2.695 million dollars... the interior seems to have been very white indeed!

I would be intrigued by that as well but having watched local project for some years now I think before pics would relegate it to a ‘normal’ format. Local project is about living in the present in a beautiful utilitarian house that brings contentment, contemplation and a sense of natural beauty to the designed space.
This is my kind of style - love this vibe.
Every detail is exquisite.
Love the home! Glad you jept the koi pond. Great selection in the original features that you decided to keep. Really well done! Great job at ingrating a pool and making it look original.
Beautiful. Just beautiful - by all means. Thank you.
This residence exemplifies impeccable mid-mod preservation, harmonizing iconic retro charm with contemporary enhancements. Kudos to everyone involved!!
Well executed.
Lovely home with abundant natural lighting.
Great job by the architects/family - timeless elegant quality nestled in the LA hills. Bravo!
My kinda house xxx
My dream home
That woodwork and backyard👀
Love the attention to details. With that being said, it feels like the staircase leading to the pool was a missed opportunity for a thin Neutra-esque steel railing, or floating cement stairs :). Although, what a beautiful and thoughtfully considered design. Well done!
If only dreams came true. 🙌
The Moore house feels like a resort in the middle of a modern oasis. That's the vibe it gives off. Thanks Local Project
Respira mediados de siglo y sencillez, es elegante . Gracias por la realización.
Absolutely breathtaking..
What an incredible restoration! 👏 💗
brilliant!!... I own and live in an architect built inner city home that is inspired by Elwood and can see the similarities in my own houses designs... great style in deed and fab resto project, well done.
This is just perfect!!!!
Gorgeous. Good job guys (and girls) !! 👍
Absolutely marvellous house ❤❤❤👏👏👏 I love objects from the 60’s and 70’s 🫶 to keep them as much as original and adapt to the modern world is very exciting 😊 great work 👍👏❤️

STUNNING! (I'm so jealous.) I would love to see more 'before and after' of the home(s) featured.
Flexible designs often anticipate changing needs and theme advancements. With the output of restoration, the entire style can be adaptable in any kinds of theme combinations. 💯💯😉😉
Stunning renovation and so tastefully done.

Lovely project!!
Magical!
What a lovely space. It looks very comfortable for a $3M home! Oh, I forgot, LA. $5M😂😂
Love it!
Amazing
Awesome home. Wd have a lot of MSM homes in the Phoenix area, never get tired of touring them when the chance comes up. It's very clear that builders today don't spend 1 second (other than maybe a few high-end custom builders) thinking about the legacy their creation might leave.
So cool.
You should be very proud, excellent work.
I dig this home 👌🏼
It's beautiful
Finally, Los Angeles Here 💯
That is a teaking beautiful house
Love the way this has been completed respectfully of the original design. Use of materials that reflect the era is problematic as teak logging is now illegal in Thailand. Teak products from Indonesia are plantation teak which are kiln burned which involves exacerbating deforestation by burning timber in these kins to harden the plantation teak. Burmese teak is directly linked to the regimes war on its own poplation as minority groups are moved from their traditional homes in military operations, and the regime profits from logging in these areas.
I am in love ❤
Really gorgeous! PS: Those koi are hungry! 😁
love it
❤❤❤
While we're on the subject of tropical midcentury modernism, we really need a Brazil series!
Nice house
Soooo goood
I love it 😍 🌊🌊😇🌊🌊😍

2 mill at least for sure
What was the name of the band that once lived and partied in the Moore House designed by Craig Ellwood in 1965?
Harika
Absolutely gorgeous home! Except for the backsplash of course, which nearly derailed the entire project, but otherwise, fantastic!
What sort of a budget do you require for such a project please?

Does anyone know what band owned it? I'm guessing a Skid Row or Poison, vibe ...
This man has an unusual cadence to the way he speaks
The garden makes the house.
They could've cleaned the pool and the paths and stairs before filming... Inside it'd be then tiles and the taps and brass accents... Great house though, seems one of the few which actually feel livable.
Soooo basically a super fancy double wide mobile home?
I got like 15 bucks I could give u for this house 💯💯💯
