Inside a Space Age Modernist Home Positioned at the Edge of a Canyon | House Tour

The Liebner Residence was designed and built in 1961 by former General Motors engineer Robert Liebner, who moved to La Jolla, CA to work in the aerospace industry. Liebner beautifully cantilevered the home over a hillside overlooking the ocean and was one of the first homes to be built in the neighborhood. The home itself is unassuming from the front facade which you find at the end of a cul de sac, It's only until you start to walk the pathway to the front door that the home really starts to reveal itself. When you enter the residence you are instantly taken back by the unique fireplace and expansive views. Not much was known about the home due to it staying with the original family up until 2019 when it came on the market for the first time.
Current owners Gary and Joan are no strangers to modernism. From their Chicago Keck and Keck home to their Palm Springs Harold Levitt home to now their Hillside La Jolla home design by Robert Liebner. The Gand's have really pushed the preservation movement in Chicago and now in California. In 2004, Joan and Gary started Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond, a nonprofit that provided tours, lectures and educational events about Modernist architecture and design to even being a Co-Author with Julius Shulman on the book titled Chicago Mid-Century Modernism which released in 2010. Gary and Joan have done a phenomenal job at curating the period furniture and ceramics throughout the home that really ties everything together.
Following a sensitive Renovation/Restoration by John Vugrin, the future of the Liebner Residence is poised to stay intact for future generations to enjoy.

Thanks for having this made. Robert Liebner and Becky were my grandparents. We lived in this house with her for a summer, and otherwise only lived a bit up the coast while growing up. My mom (Renee, one of the two pictured as young kids) and all 3 of her siblings grew up in the house, with the youngest 2 having been born to Bill Ivans, the glider pilot. We continue to appreciate the care you've taken with the home, as well as the attention you've brought to its unique design and location.

That's an amazing story! This home is off the charts! Very thankful for this video! My grandfather was an electrical engineer who worked on the Texas Capital but my grandparents home was a phenomenal flat roof modernist home he designed. The architecture students at University of Texas still drop by to see it. From a very young age I didn't know I was being exposed to this but knew it was very different and exciting. Shaped my world along with Frank Lloyd Wright. Cheers!

Native San Diegian. Dad was an aerospace engineer. We knew about this house of course and would drive by and around to get a look at all the angles. Building off the side of a cliff was indeed a very new idea.
These videos reminded me fondly of NOWNESS's videos of homes which kept me going during lockdown.

Incredible-- looks to be in impeccable condition. Fabulous site, yet good proximity to amenities (I imagine, which I feel matters for everyday life.) For me Wright is the ultimate, however it may not be possible for me to say this house is not his equal. This house is definitely simpler, yet does not look visually diminished. It lacks the scored, red floor that I love, but ditto, Wright's Pew house so there you are. Anyway, fabulous house, fabulous couple!!🙂🙂❤️❤️💯💯

Gorgeous home, gorgeous view, fireplace, guitars (Gibson ESP etc) and that mustang convertible.

This house is as taut as a bowstring. The gorgeous deck and stair railings reinforce this and contrast marvelously with the billow of the trees. I can't help but wonder how those railings would have worked out at Fallingwater?
What a find, what a treasure! And it has found its perfect residents. My heart melts when I see something like this.
I would love if this couple would adopt me so I can come over to Mom and Dad's house for visits, stayovers, dinners...I'm not much younger than they are, but that's ok. 😃 Stunning home, furnishings and I bet there are some amazing stories more than what was shared here. That home is breath-taking.

"International Orange" -- a.k.a. the Golden Gate Bridge's color! Beautiful home. I'm excited to hear that the owners are interested in promoting modern architecture. I hope that at some point there may be a tour of wonderful modern homes including this one.
Fun fact! International Orange is the same color they paint the Golden Gate Bridge!

Admittedly I'm not a fan of most Modernist home architecture, however occasionally there will be one that is so aesthetically pleasing and harmonious I am blown away. This home is one of those times, absolutely beautiful attention to detail.

It’s impossible to choose a favorite house. They are all different, err well, at least should be. But when they said this was designed by engineer, that sealed the deal.

I absolutely love this! You guys are an inspiration. Can I ask for my learning though, this clearly has many modernist influences, but would you say this has signs of early postmodernism? Challenging the norm with ‘far out’ design. Attention to aesthetics over function? Etc. I’d love to hear what other people think? Thanks heaps

This house could have been a lot nicer if the wall running from the kitchen to the dinning room wasn’t obstructing the beautiful view off the cliff. If the wall was replaced with glass it would also let in a ton of light and highlight the sculptural fireplace.

@10:25ff The only thing I would want to change is adding big windows on that big black wall, to open up lighting for their spectacular view.
Why was Wright (mostly) uninterested in using (exposed) steel in his domestic commissions? Who knows? Perhaps he just found it too troublesome to deal with?? I would love to hear a good explanation. He definitely skimped on it at Fallingwater.

He didn't really have to "deal" with it. With Fallingwater in particular, contractors went off plans to shore up weak spots in Wright's design. It probably didn't help that he drew them up hastily when he found out Kaufmann was on his way to visit after several unanswered letters asking for status.

I’m in orbit over this…
Modernism preceeded the sixties, so rather than being changers as people of the sixties you embraced the establishment, modernism and the financial and title systems that allow you to own a property. Funny how people want to change a world that has evolved pretty well given the scale of "making the world a better place".
