It's funny how my last game the only pieces left were pawns and opposite colored bishops, I offered a draw, and offered a draw by repetition, but my opponent never accepted and blundered and I won.

Opposite color bishops are drawish when no other pieces are on board. But if you have other pieces, those pieces can unleash their full power to attack.

Soltis has said (though he doesn't take credit for it) that "in middlegames with bishops of opposite colours, the player with the attack is a piece ahead".

@@mikekeenan8450 Yes, the defending side has 1 less piece for defense (the bishop cannot help), like in this video, Nelson's opponent has to defend rook+bishop with only his rook

Awesome game Nelson. 6:50 the idea behind Bd8 is that when the position at 7:20 comes up, you can sacrifice the bishop for the pawn instead of moving the King, and after fxg5, Kxg5. Black is now down a bishop for a pawn, but has escaped the mating net. Still a losing position, but Black has fighting chances if white blunders or runs into time trouble.

Engines can find insane defensive resources which makes playing bots really weird, they play couple book moves, blunder half their pieces then defend for 20 more moves.

@@mariuszpudzianowski8400 Agreed, but in this case, I don't think Bd8 was such an engine move. I saw the logic of it as soon as the position at 7:20 came up. Very difficult to find in blitz, but in a longer time format where you have a couple minutes to calculate, I have no doubt a player of this level would see it. Although by the same token, I doubt such a player would find themselves in such a mating net to begin with in such a time format, which is what makes blitz games so entertaining.

I'm sure that you know it Nelson but opposite colored bishops are drawish when there are no other pieces on the board. However, when there are rooks and/or queens on the board positions could get very sharp.

Bf8 holds because you can sacrifice it on g5 to stop the mate. However in the following endgame (piece for two pawns), you'd probably have won anyway.

Won't pretend I didn't use the engine (I was curious and couldn't see the logic behind the move) but the idea of bishop d8 is so that it can take the pawn when you take and deliver check on g5. Sacrificing the bishop to avoid the checkmate.

Completely unrelated topic, but I recently played a game where I had two brilliant moves. I sacrificed a bishop to win my opponent's bishop and prevent castling, and I sacrificed a knight to force a checkmate, but my opponent resigned. I'm 900 ELO btw.

Good game. I don't know that many openings, so I often try and mix things up and play tactically after the first moves. But that can mess up if you go down the wrong line.

Another great lesson. I suppose black could sacrifice his bishop (@6:45) with rook to C8 to prevent the bishop from going back rank, but that would still be a losing move being down a bishop in the end game? ( though not at my elo). Thanks for another grit lesson. You really stretch my brain.

the mistake your opponent made was putting his kingside pawns on the same color as your bishop. Otherwise the game is an easy draw. Whenever my opponent is down to a single bishop and no knights I put my pawns on the opposite color

He is reversing through moves here (if you pay attention to the last-move indicators you can see this) -- the rook wasn't ever actually hanging.

yes I agree there is an element of "bluff" in chess especially at beginner levels (where I am). sometimes you can disguise an attack by pretending you are doing something different. in this particular instance, probably the time trouble impacted the decisions of Nelson's opponent, otherwise at 2300+ level he would have probably reacted properly

@@realmahadeo You'd be suprised at how long this keeps working, GMs fall for "sacrifices" in classical games and they have multiple hours to realize that you can't in fact just take "free" piece.
