Do or do not this is dumb as hell
The documentary about this was wild. On the last day they went out to eat and they all had the same thing, like no deviation. Apparently that was one of their rules you did things exactly the same as the rest. Women and men had to wear certain clothes, even had to shave a certain way. They would switch who would go out to work vs who stayed at the compound They even had to pour pancake syrup in a particular direction, they had them under a heavy thumb but made it seem like a blessing that they were able to partake in this lifestyle because they alone would cross over to a higher state of being Until the Lady died of Cancer and dude had to quickly come up with an explanation since she wasn't supposed to die like a normal human So last ditch attempt he killed them all, only ones left alive were those who were able to successfully leave, and the one young man left alive who arranged everyone just as instructed and then made the call to police.

Fun fact: This cult is featured in Rockstar’s popular game Red Dead Redemption 2. There is an Easter Egg at night where an alien will actually appear and scan the bodies.
The heavens gate cult was literally my last years research presentation for school. I love this cult (not as support but as interest) *Fact about the Cult:* All 39 cult memebers wore black & white nike's (The Nike Decade's) on they're death bed. The employee was so happy/enthused about the fact that they had bought 39 pairs of shoes. Only to their surprise.

what're you, in a cult? no one forced you to do anything, get out of here and touch grass
You forgot to include a couple of key/crazy things about the cult. Marshall Applewhite was actually a music teacher until he was fired for having an affair with one of his male students. Marshall was deeply ashamed of his sexuality, so he and many of his cult members went down to Mexico to get themselves castrated. Bonnie died of cancer and her kids from a previous relationship didn’t know about her death until much much later, Bonnie’s death and the passing of Haley’s Comet set the wheels in motion for the mass suicide. And finally after the mass suicide sales for the Nike Air Decade exploded and are now collectors items.
"Because I spend a lot of money on ugh, Chinese equipment." I see what you did there and the joke is appreciated. I laughed out loud.
Thank you for shining a light on this weird perception people had. I always wanted to visit the museum that has the bunks set up with mannequins and the clothing they wore when they committed suicide with the cloths over their face and everything with real handwritten notes from the people before they died.
You missed some interesting details. They all wore the same Nike shoes upon death. Also, there were 2 cultists that chickened out, but later, after being interviewed (where they said they regretted not taking part) on television, they took their own lives in the same manner.

@crlody3045 OK, yeah, a minor detail I got wrong. The 2 didn't chicken out. I still remember that they interviewed them, and they committed suicide shortly after
I love that he's calling a sewer slide. Also this cult was referenced in Red Dead 2. There's a house you can find that had a group of corpses either sitting at a table or laying on bed. And at some point, there's a beams from a space ship
Yesterday I spent hours watching their final interviews and his final speech. I even checked our Haven Gate website. I think the most disturbing thing is how happy they were to end their life. Did Bonnie die before they killed themselves? I was confused on this aspect.
@Old_Klepto_Nite

Yeah, she died of cancer. I can't remember what the dude's excuse was but it was something about her needing to prepare for their exit or something like that

I was so scared back then because my grandpa knew a guy who was in that cult. I was scared my grandpa would go there and believe craps like that cause I already heard about the 1978 Jonestown mass suicide and the order of the solar temple. Then this suicide happend in match 1997, when we saw the pictures of the corpses covered in purple sheet. I was traumatized cause they took their own lives for nothing. My worst memory in the 90s. Also family guy’s first season got inspired by that event where Peter unconsciously saved Meg from a cult.

So, I was in 10th grade when this happened, my mom and aunt used to talk about this cult like it was interesting, because they were really into spirituality... And when THIS happened I remember my mom and aunt saying...."Well, we don't know if they DIDN'T get into an alien spaceship." Thanks for covering more cult stuff. No matter how many times I watch documentary or commentary on cults, I still find it interesting to hear another take. I remember when this happened very well as I am quite a bit older than you.
“and the one woman watching” i feel appreciated
I lived next to the house for 6 years and still go back regularly- it got torn down but the area is so creepy
Fun fact: Every time the cult leader saids “father” his voice breaks, remembering his own father. Even if its the Heavenly Father
I was 17 when Heaven's Gate rode the sewer slide to board their spaceship. Crazy and manipulative? Absolutely. But as cults go, they were on the tame side. At least there was no SA or child brides, afaik.
their website is up & still running, last i heard, in the same state that they left it in. several members were left behind to keep it running, or at least that's how the story goes. i first heard about heaven's gate in middle school, and emailed them, not really expecting but still hoping, for a response. i got several, to my surprise. they were nice enough, to a kid bothering them on the internet, lol. still kind of funny seeing them in my old emails.
Even though I’ve learned about Heavens Gate before I never watched the documentary and when I heard him say “the earth is about to be recycled” I freaked out bc that’s literally the opening line of Leave with Us by Chelsea Grin and I never knew what it was from 😂😂
At least there was one winner in all of this. That insurance company made BANK.
Oompaville blesses us once more with an absolute banger of a video.
The funniest thing I ever saw on SNL was a fake commercial for their preferred brand of shoes. Using the Beatles "Revolution" (which their preferred brand was using in their ads at the time) as the sound track and video of the Heavens Gate scene, focusing on the shoes. And ending with the caption "(MAJOR COMPETITOR) WORN BY SANE, REASONABLE PEOPLE"

this is so crazy (thanks to oomp and editor for these amazing vids)
I don't know how to feel about the Heavens Gate cult because unlike any other cult there was no coercion or negative repercussion for leaving the cult.
