-------TODAY’S LESSON
In today’s lesson, we discover the differences between question words: question, inquiry, enquiry enquiries and query.
Experts often disagree over the correct usage of these words, but we’re going to keep it simple. By following my straightforward guidelines, you will have the confidence to get these confusing words right every time.
For each word we will review the noun, preposition and the verb. I will also provide handy use cases for each word, so you have a clear understanding of when to use them.
Are you ready to discover the differences between questions words: inquiry, enquiry and query?
0:00 enquiry vs Inquiry Introduction
0:37 Question meaning

- Use case: A legal or governmental investigation into something.
- Noun example: For serious things, there can be a governmental inquiry into something to find out what happened, such as an inquiry into the Iraq War.

- Preposition is 'about'
- Use case: a formal way of asking a question

“When I was younger… I mean when I was a teenager.” Gold 😊
Interestingly, never in 70yr have I ever been taught or taught that enquiry is pronounced same as inquiry. I do appreciate your excellent explanations of meanings. Thanks
And query is used in data analysis as in SQL (structured query language) to mean a specification of a selection of information from a data source.
I love how you act and that makes me not forget the lesson. I already put that I like the video, for the record.
I really like your hand gesture when teaching to stress words rightly: it makes it easier to remember. Thanks a lot for your lessons: wishing you to be followed as you deserve.
Thanks! I loved your short lesson! Cheers!
I clicked on this even though I'm a native English speaker (from the US) because I wasn't clear about the inquiry/enquiry difference. It seems that in American English, only "inquiry" is used today. Indeed, I use the Grammarly app and they try to correct it when I type in "enquiry," lol. And, as you mentioned, we often use inquire as a verb, as in "I'd like to inquire about the item for sale," though that sounds formal and today we're more likely to just say "ask."

How she says "WE brits dont Say enquire!"!!! Like it's so important whether they Say it or not.
I always thought of enquiries as a polite or soft questioning. Thank you.
Good job differentiating between American and Brit English. We don't use 'enquiry' much here in the US (I have because I used to work for BP!). Etymology might help folks. From M-W: Middle English "enquiren", from Anglo-French "enquerre", from Vulgar Latin "inquaerere", alteration of Latin "inquirere", from "in-" + "quaerere" to seek. So, it has similar origin to the word "quest".
Thank you for the lesson! 🙏🌸
Actually, the teacher and the lesson are beautiful. I helped me a lot learn the difference between these words.

As an American- An inquiry into the slogan of The Enquirer "Enquiring minds want to know" from the '70s changed it to the more grammatically correct "Inquiring minds want to know" , even if it didn't help the tabloid's content.
I like your seriousness, teacher. We mess it this time. 🌷🌷

thank you so much , God bless you dear
When you question someone you are intgerrogating the person, as you rightly said, but when you question something, you doubt its veracity! Enquire can have several prepositions, but to alone is not an option. It is possible to say: enquire as to, also : enquire after, of, into.

Thank you! With the i and the e in inquiry and enquiry, this reminds me of the difference between insure and ensure. Would you agree that nsure means to guarantee financial replacement and ensure means moral or non-financial support?

Mohamed, you're really rude. In the West you NEVER say to someone to smile more. It's her business whether she smiles or not. If you're learning English, please also learn what is rude or not rude to say in the UK.
¡Qué hermosura de lección!
Thank you. Also, may I enquire: "to question" as "feel or express doubt about; raise objections to" - is this meaning not in the British English?

*A good title is LIKE A DREAMT BOOK HALF-READ, that's why we've come.* _And you are right ... you can cause & provoke smiles, but you do smile so rarely._ If I may, I do remember such cluster-like titles from a very catching Michael Swan's 1984 'Practical English Usage', most complete work on the topic. Please do follow Person of Interest's with Amy Acker. You are so much alike, and she has started to smile not long ago.
great
I think most Americans would stress the first syllable of inquiry, instead of the second. With regard to enquiry, the second syllable would be stressed, as in British English. Any thoughts?
If I were to be able to like this video 1000 times I would.

After I have explained something to a group of people (typically during a business meeting), how do I best ask for a confirmation that what I expained is clear to everyone, without sounding harsh? "Did I make myself clear?" - doesn't it sound a bit like an aggresive colonel expecting immediate results and obedience?
@JadeJoddle

There is a problem with phrases like this because people have a tendency to answer 'yes', even when they really mean 'no'. You could try saying 'need me to go over any of that again?' This is because it takes the spotlight off of the audience.

Oh Jade you ask me if i like this video?.i think your video liked me because i found it just one minute before you begin the lesson.I came here to delve (new word i learnt);this video, to know more about your character, but i found you willing to inquire about us.Ok , speak very well ; look vey well , new hair.
All these words seem to be based on the Spanish word "qué" ('what'), and the Latin word "quid" ('what').
What does"going to do something"mean in English?
So inquire is not used in BrE, so what is then?
Very very useful and good video. But before posting , please check your videos especially for lighting and impression of writings(ink). This video has light patch which is very disturbing. Writing is very light so please use a dark coloured ink , not blue. Please bring in voice modulation to emphasise on important points and to distinguish different words. Otherwise very very good. Keep them coming.
