Injection Training for Male Cougar 'Odin'

We’re purring with excitement - it’s #NationalCougarDay! 😻
Our resident cougar, ‘Odin’, is enjoying his golden years at 15 years old. Considering the median life expectancy for male cougars in human care is 13 years, Odin is truly remarkable for his age!
As with many senior zoo residents, Odin receives specialized care from our dedicated Animal Care, Health & Welfare (ACHW) team. They support him through age-related health concerns, such as stiffness and arthritis, with various methods including habitat modifications and cartrophen injections. 🩺
Odin voluntarily participates in injection training to ensure he feels safe and comfortable during these procedures. Utilizing a target-training method, an Animal Care Technician guides Odin into the desired position by having him touch his nose to a target mark. Odin’s favourite treat, horse meat, serves as a positive reinforcement for his cooperation. While Odin enjoys his snack, another Animal Care Technician simulates the injection with a practice needle that has a blunt end. This needle doesn’t pierce the skin but mimics the pressure Odin will feel, helping him learn what to expect when he receives the actual injection. Way to go, Odin! 😻
