Infinite-Minded Metrics | Simon Sinek

There's nothing wrong with having goals. But in business, these metrics don't actually constitute the end of the game. Instead of focusing on which milestones we've reached, in an infinite game we should focus on which direction we're trending in.
Recorded at Madison Industries: Owner's Day Event, August 2021.

Simon! Ever since I adopted an infinite mindset and applied it to my life, it truly has changed the game for me. If I I fell short meeting a goal in the past, I thought it was the end of the world - now that I recalibrated my mind to view things infinitely, I acknowledge my shortcomings, and I strive to get better from lessons learned. These days I carry myself with more confidence than ever, personally and professionally! And now I'm trying to convince my colleagues at work to view things infinitely, in a notoriously finite field (education). It's hard though, some seem to insist on measuring things based on status quo rigid parameters (academic assessments being the prominent indicator of students' growth for example) instead of taking on a more holistic view. Anyway, no more taking "wins" on a good day and "losses" on a bad day for me. Only ahead days, and behind days! I'm set on leaving this world better than how I came into it! Thanks again!!

I think Simon has the ability to be relatable which is a huge strength. However, I might not always agree with what he says, but he has an art of expressing his views by being very simple in its meaning yet powerful.

I think that this is really an excellent ideia. The next step is clearly giving some content to the idea itself. I see this transforming not only leadership but also things like productivity. For many years productivity was related to the efficiency or effectiveness or the hustle culture and now, with this new ideia, it's more about the sustainability and innovation and things like that. The theory is becoming better and as it normally goes, the practice will follow the theory and I'm really excited to what will change, specially in the game of productivity.

This thinking is exactly why I did not loose the 2016 or 2020 Primary Presidential Elections. They were just 2 mile markers for the Infinite Game of the pursuit for the recalibration of the USA Political System.

Metric is something finite. To have an infinite metric sounds oxymoron. To have finite plays in the infinite game is the only metric we need, The infinite game I feel does not require a metric of its own

I think what Simon is getting is that traditional metrics are absolute, independent, and in-the-moment: I have sold X units by Y date. How many units I have sold previous have no real bearing on that measurement, other than perhaps defining it beforehand (sell 10% more units than last time). Infinite metrics would then be relative/comparative and focused on understanding the trend; it would be gathered from multiple data points over time.

@@PhotonBeast I could see infinite metrics having to do with interpersonal relations on a team, how is the teamwork, do teams trust each other, etc. Those would be infinite metrics that I could see having affects on the trends over time.

There’s nothing in it. It removes a need to know their choice by the event management, can be reused if unused, it’s the best hydrator for a speaker, and comes prepackaged in an easy to use container that doesn’t clutter the table. No conspiracy or political angle.
