I'm constantly amazed about the new processes that happen in Additive Manufacturing. From metal printed rocket engines, to concrete housing and now this. What a great time to be in the 3D printing hobby and industry

Yea, that's going to be a big benefit to medical around blood vessels and such. Also, I like that this one explicitly commented "we HAVE released a paper", subtle shade towards what I presume is their lab mate.

wait... IS this an additive manufacturing process, though? seems to me it's clearly subtractive: you start with a relatively thick, homogeneous extrusion of material, then you pattern a volume of that material, then you process it to *remove* everything but that patterned volume. Unless I'm missing something here, the only real "additive" step, the extrusion, is no more involved in shaping the final product than is slapping a chunk of steel on a milling table; the size/shape of the blank only affects the geometry of the finished part by defining it's maximum dimensions.

You also subtract from the powder bed. In my opinion it's addictive manufacturing, because the end product has very different physical properties after "printing". If you cnc metal, the material stays the same

You could say the same about resin printing. Gray area? Maybe. But I think it's much more similar to additive techniques.

I intuitively sense this is an important process and we will probably see applications far beyond those proposed as this tech evolves. Nice report.

So are they sticking something onto the plastic strip that's getting modified, or is the strip going into a container of liquid to get adhered to? 🤔

I think conceiving of axial tomography printing as "all at once" is hindering your understanding here. The holographic technique you covered recently is "all at once," because the light is structured in 3 dimensions. In axial tomography, the light is structured only in two dimensions, like a projector; it projects a 2d version of the object, then the medium rotates and it projects the 2d image of that new angle. Rather than cure all at once, the medium is carefully tuned to cure only once a region accumulates a certain level of light over the period of a single rotation of the chamber. A similar thing happens here with the gel; the crucial rotation is introduced by the belt going over that roller right next to the projector. An unfortunate limitation would be that the gel stretches unevenly as it goes around that curve, since the part in contact with the belt pretty much stays the same length, while the outer surface stretches. I suspect this is why they're using a limited depth, though that probably hardly matters when your target feature size is measured in microns. Very cool research, and I'm glad to have gotten a glimpse of it!
