Indiana Jones & the Dial of Destiny: Did It End The Franchise On A High Note?

Ойын-сауық

This is it, folks! It's time to blow the dust off the fedora, oil the whip, and venture into the unknown one last time as we celebrate the end of an era with a look back at the fifth film in the Indiana Jones franchise, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny!
Unleashed 15 years after Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and presented as Harrison Ford's final performance as Dr. Henry Walton "Indiana" Jones Jr., Dial of Destiny finds a disillusioned Indy haunted by a villain from his past and pulled into a chase to recover the Antikythera, an Ancient Greek hand-powered orrery capable of predicting astronomical patterns and eclipses in advance. When released in the summer of 2023, it underperformed financially and was ill-received by many franchise fans. Looking back after a few months, did it deserve a better fate?

I say this in defense of Crystal Skull: Indy, although older and grumpier, is still more or less the same character as he was in the Original Trilogy. And the Movie ended on a pleasant note, with him becoming Dean, marrying Marion and having a Son who may or may not inherit the Fedora at some point in the future.

Right. Only that Crystal skull is an abomination, yet, better than the current movie, but stil - I cannot forgive the introduction of Aliens after Indie found the ark and the holy grail.....it does in no way fit the Narrative....and it is where the ridiculous chase scene thing started off.....It still could be a good move, given the actors and that one day they possibly could decide to make a significant recut and re-release as directors cut...

By this point, the Raider ran a horse into the sunset with his father. And became the wise Teacher who got a second chance at happiness with his first love got married had two Heirs Short Round and Mutt to look after his legacy and got a new job. It makes you wonder how was this movie ever going to top off both those endings that gave both sides of Indiana Jones the Happy Ending he deserved why did they need to water all that down to having Marion show up to the very end of the film to mourn their son off the screen and we'll never know if Indy gets a second chance with Marion since they are going through a divorce is just an awful way for the good Doctor to end his career.

The comment 'Speilberg wanted to pass the torch' is hopelessly naïve. He was attached to the film, he saw what the script was like and did not want to be attached to it so left - managed to keep his dignity in doing so which sadly the rest attached to this lost.

This is just false. When Mangold arrived the scripts where completely re-written. Spielberg's Indy 5 took place in China and had a totally different story. It was scheduled to start filming in April 2020. After covid hit, Spielberg (who contributed in the writing of the script and was satisfied with it) said that it would have been too difficult and would have taken too much time for him working on the movie with covid protocols, time that he would have rather spent making more "personal" movies like The Fablemans. So he quit and he chose Mangold. Mangold hired different writers (the Butterworth brothers, who worked with him on Ford V Ferrari) to rework the script, making it totally different. Spielberg visited the set multiple times and he liked the new direction the movie took. It's fine not to like Dial Of Destiny, but you just spread disinformation. Also, I love Spielberg, but he directed Crystal Skull, that was way worse than Indy 5.

Last Crusade was definitely the perfect ending. From the double meaning title, to the ride into the sunset at the end. But, I did enjoy Dial of Destiny and it was the most invested I've seen Harrison in a movie in quite some time. But ultimately I feel Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny were not needed. I enjoyed the flashback sequence a lot and I'm glad it was included, and extended.

I get that every Indy film has female that tags along but she wasn't like daughter figure or a love interest. Her character just felt shoe horned in and maybe just to lighten the load for Harrison Ford.

I wish they would have cut the whole CIA bit, the bugs scene (already did that in Temple of Doom and to a lesser extent Raider). Loved the third act. It felt deeply George Lucas to me. I think so much of its poor reception is just the milieu it was released in. I think it will age well and I enjoy watching it on my Indy marathons.

The de-aging effects are awful. Harrison Ford could have been de-aged to how he looked in Air Force One or The Fugitive, which aren't that far off of The Last Crusade. Last Crusade was in 1989, The Fugitive is 1993, which is 4 years. Air Force One is 1996, which is 7 years. Last Crusade took place around 1937 or 1938, and the opening is in 1944. That's 7 years. That could have worked. Instead, Harrison Ford is de-aged to how he looked in Raiders and in Blade Runner. My mind was playing mental gymnastics all the way through that opening flashback, which took 15 years to sit through as it was. And because my mind was pre-occupied with figuring out the math between years, it was not into this movie at all. So, for the most of the movie, my mind was doing these complex equations with "Oh, look, images on the screen!" every now and then. Ultimately, I think this was the worst movie I saw in 2023.

I really enjoyed the movie. Better than the Crystal Skull (though I liked that one as well). I really wished that Short Round was in it. I feel he could have appeared as one of Indy's contacts. Morion's role was too brief. But overall an enjoyable entry

It’s a film with good ideas, but a script that needed a few more drafts. Teddy and Helena are not a great pairing for Indy as they aren’t interesting or dynamic enough to give him anything to play off of. It should have been Banderas’ captain and John Rhys Sala on an adventure with Indy.

Getting the band back together my butt. At no point are they all together, at no point do they "make music", at no point do we get to see Short Round, and Mutt is killed off screen. Indiana Jones doesn't solve any of the problems, he is an unnecessary character in what is meant to be his own movie and it is fleabag who takes the protagonist role, drives the plot forward, beats the bad guys, rescues Indiana from them, then rescues him from himself while magically treating his gunshot and transporting him back to the future. Time travel through mystical means might make since in an Indy movie if you try real hard to make it work, but Archimedes is an ancient scientist and the concept of him inventing a technological device to time travel is too absurd even for a Monty Python sketch.

Then why is it always Fleabag pushing the story forward while he just follows behind? Why is the final moment of the story the result of her decision to knock him out in direct opposition to his decision to stay? Why is she the one who miraculously convinces Marion not to divorce him offscreen while he is unconscious so that he can have a happy ending? Just because someone says one character is the protagonist doesn't mean anything if the story itself disagrees.@@francescomonopoli9270

I felt that a more fitting death for Mutt would have been him dying after joining the Cuban Revolution in an effort to emulate the life of his father. In Young Indiana Jones, Indy rode with Poncho Villa, Nearly joined the Bolsheviks in Russia, saw the depressing effects of Colonialism in the Congo, witnessed and nearly joined the 1916 Irish Easter Rising, etc. So it would be fitting for Mutt to have died fighting in a Revolution that his dad would have been likely to have joined himself in his youth. . I think that if Mutt had died trying to live a life similar to his father's, it would have been poetic and tragic, considering that the last time we see Mutt onscreen, he's being denied receiving his father's legacy and ultimate approval to follow in his footsteps.

I actually liked this film. I watched it on blu-ray on boxing day, and my expectations were pretty low. However, I found myself mostly liking it. My only real gripe is that it's about 20 minutes too long. If they'd trimmed it to a 2hr running time, I think it'd be better.

I'm sharing something deep here. I never had a father figure growing up. Indiana Jones was fictional but as a kid was like the cool uncle or father figure I had. He was suave, cool, smart and amazing adventures! So I was Afraid...no terrified of all the rumors and reshoots for the film. I decided not to watch this film especially with Disney at the helm😡 till now... For what it was it was...alright. I didn't like how Indy took the back seat especially for it beibg his last adventure. I didn't hate Crystal Skull either. I liked how we got to see a child of Indiana Jones cause c'mon...we know he has to have other kids around the world due to his uh... adventures 😅. Over all as a kid I always did feel The Last Crusade was the end...the other films are nice adventures for me (speaking for myself) but I was also fine with The Trilogy ending as it was...for Dr.Henry Jones J.R...i mean Dr.Jones...Indiana Jones🔥👏

I’ve only seen this movie once and it was enough for me. It’s too long, and though I love John Williams, the reuse of music from the previous movies was distracting as hell. I noticed straight-up copy-and-paste from “Crystal Skull” for some of the action scenes.

In my opinion - absolutely. While it took me some time to see good points of Indy4, but I didn't have that problem with 'Dial' - I enjoyed it immediately. The prologue was obviously one big love letter to Indy3, and the rest was really fun. Having read all the bad predictions, I was prepared for sth terrible, but instead - I loved it. The underwater stuff (inspired by the Fate of Atlantis), horse riding during the parade - that's classic Indy stuff, and it's far less crazy than lifeboat falling from the plane and later from the cliff, not to mention the fridge. Great setpieces - castle, warehouse, Archimedes tomb, old and new Syracuse. And the fact that there really is an Antykithera mechanism is a cherry on top. One big mistake - why were there no date tags like in previous movies? 'New York 1969', for instance - that's a tradition of these movies - and it's especially important here, since this one is dealing with time. And sure the film had problems - too many chaotic fights, few scenes felt repeated. But overall it was good. I bought the DVD and've watched it several times already. The only question - since the ending of 'Skull' had Indy and Marion walk down the aisle, which perfectly completed how they walked down the stairs at the end of 'Raiders', the question is - was this movie necessary? But we already had games, novels, comicbook devising new stories, then why not? And it was fun, even though it brought Indy and Marion to a similar ending like in the 4th.

problems? The movie was complete and utter garbage. There were zero set pieces. A lame tukuk chase doesnt qualify and neither does Indy splashing some water in a drain. Hell he spent the last act of the movie on the edge of tears while bleeding out. Pathetic.

@@purefoldnz3070 What was wrong with that water trap? a classic hidden entrance (btw, I guessed it will be connected to Archimedes when I saw it in the trailer- yay for me ;) ). I'm not defending the tuktuk chase - already in the cinema I thought it was too long and too much, although tuktuk being flanked by two cars at the same time was something new. I didn't find Indy being shot and ready to stay 'pathetic' - he was fascinated by what he was seeing and he thought his life back in 20th century was not going to get better. Just like in 'Crusade' when he was blindly reaching for the Grail until his father dissuaded him.

@@purefoldnz3070 In the words of Indy from Last Crusade- 'Relax!' :D And I didn't say they compare, cause obviously they don't - it wasn't even a death trap, as they were able to leave that gas filling room any time they wanted - the passage was open all the time! this mechanism looked more like a way of dissuading people from going any further than killling them. And the sarcophagus in that chamber looked great. The shot of Teddy watching things happen below him - it felt just like a scene from the original trilogy. As a last adventure suited for older Indy - I liked it. It all worked for me, what else can I say - being a huge Indy fan and having seen all the 'it will be a disaster' predictions, in July I entered the cinema cartain that I will be disappointed, but I left it with a huge smile. Even as I'm writing now, the DVD (with disappointing menu, compared to previous 4 - that I must say) is in my drive.

It ended more on a quiet note. Plus, (spoilers) real "subtle" that they killed off Mutt because he was played by Shia LaBeouf. 😒🙄 Mutt could've still be in the time-line & movie (as a small cameo), just have him be played by a different actor now that Mutt is older. Like Chris Pratt, since there were rumors of him playing Indiana Jones in a reboot, so instead replacing Harrison Ford's iconic character, he could play his successor/heir to the Jones' legacy.
