Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: Better Than Dial of Destiny?

Ойын-сауық

To many, the Indiana Jones series ended with The Last Crusade, despite running for two more movies. Many fans disliked the most recent film, Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny, but that reception seems muted compared to how Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was received. When it came out in 2008, people hated how the film was bogged down by silliness, including the infamous “nuke the fridge” scene and Shia LaBeouf’s character swinging on vines through the jungle. Plus, for many, including aliens was too much, even for the heightened reality of an Indiana Jones movie.
Yet, in retrospect, is Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that bad? Does it have some redeeming aspects, such as the fact that it was the last Indiana Jones movie from Steven Spielberg and George Lucas? How does it compare to the downbeat, morose Dial of Destiny? We dig into it in this episode of Revisited, written and narrated by Steve Seigh and edited by Ric Solomon.
Do you think Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is better than Dial of Destiny? Let us know in the comments.

Despite the sketchy CGI, this felt like a proper finale to Indiana Jones. There was good action scenes, some good new characters, and he gets Marian in the end.

Well, I personally like that while Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Last Crusade are parallel to one another in terms of being traditional pulp adventure stories with some supernatural elements, Temple of Doom and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull are parallel to one another in terms of being pulp films that delves deeper into the mythological than the other two films. As Temple of Doom is my personal favorite Indy film, of which it’s actually chronologically the first Indy film.

@handznet I think what ruins it for me is the really fake looking cgi, the comedy sword fight and Marion driving the amphibious vehicle off a cliff into a tree and then gently landing in the water. I know Indiana Jones has several unrealistic moments throughout the entire movie series, but the ones in Crystal Skull just feel a bit too much like they're treading into Saturday morning cartoon territory. I think Spielberg forgot he wasn't making the next Tintin movie.

I rewatched it after watching Dial of Destiny, and it's definitely better, in my opinion. For one, Indy still feels like Indy. He's not some broken shell of what he was. I'd say Shia is miscast, and I still don't like the whole alien thing. It works since they tie it in with a lot of real conspiracies, but I'd still prefer something else. It honestly doesn't rely that much on CGI until the third act. The bike chase through the city is pretty freaking awesome. Oh, and I don't mind the whole fridge thing. Crystal Skull has problems, but its no where near as bad as what the dorks claim it is. There are some very impressive things in it, like the chase scene on the bike where Indy is pulled off the bike, into the car, he fights them off, & climbs out through the other side of the car back onto the bike. I think the story is rather intriguing & its mostly quite engaging. After the ancient cemetery, I think it loses its way a bit, but I still think its a good film. Ray Winstone's character flip flops sides too many times, & his fate is just like Benny in The Mummy. Its a good film, & although not perfect, its far from the abomination the whiners say it is.

The only one I thought was complete atrocious garbage, in my view, was the Dial Of Destiny/the Disney made one (with no involvement from Lucas and very, if any, involvement from Spielberg). Despite overnight shipping, and in some cases same day delivery, studios could send reel film to any theater in the county. Somehow, it is just not good enough. Regarding the story, this should have been a coming of age story. It really does not let Mutt grow up or take on the reigns. Given that the film could not accomplish this, it may not have been necessary to make it.

I saw it three times in 2008, in its theatrical run. At least this is Indiana Jones and isn't an old fart. I liked Ford's acting in Dial of Destiny, but is all out of place. If they want a broken character, at least make it the main character and start broken, and finish with a new character. But no, is a broken character, that ends even worst... Temple was the last very, very good Indy. Spielberg was completly in the project, he liked to impress with gore, blood and guts (like in Raiders). Then Last Crusade brought a lighter tone, with a family dynamic, what is very bad for a pulp hero. Then they follow that way in the 4th and Mangold ruined everything with the last one. It was very hard to put the family part of this movie in the script - he needs to find a lost son in the adventure, with a good pace. They struggled to do it. Then Mangold somehow thought that was a good ideia to divorce the man, kill his son, everything off screen. This is the second good end of the character.

It was better for easily specifiable reasons: 1. It was shot on 35mm so it looked far more expensive and cinematic than Dial of D. 2. It was shot mostly on-location so looked more realistic than Dial of D (excluding the entirely CGI vine-swinging / fridge scenes). 3. It used a real stunt team for most of the action, therefore ensuring that it was thrilling to watch (M:I / Bond style). 4. Mutt was a more palatable sidekick than Helena alongside Indy. 5. Indy still felt like the same Indy from the previous film.

Dial had some of the same problems that the Star Wars sequel trilogy had, to much off screen character development and you're left to try to make sense of it. Not saying Dial is bad but I didn't like what they did with it. I don't really have a desire to re-watch it at all but maybe it'll get better the more I watch it.

Yes, yes & yes. Crystal Skull is 1,000 times better than Indy J and the dial of the insufferable woke feminist trash IMO. Couldn't pay me to watch that POS (and I'm not alone there, it lost millions and is a box office flop - even said by Disney itself...at least Crystal Skull made a lot of money and was a success at the box office & it does have its own fans, even if it wasn't everyone's favorite Indy film at the time).

I liked Crystal Skull then and still do. Zero interest in an 80 year old Harrison Ford doing it again. Sometimes enough is enough. Not agism I’m 63 , at 80 reality wins. Always.

I think with some tweaks, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull would jump a few ranks. I actually love the concept - with the crystal skulls revealing ancient extra-terrestrial contact. I don't like the bleached out lighting and overly clean color-grading. Most of the humor is bad. The CGI is bad. The Tarzan vine swinging is bad. I actually don't care for the main villain, and I normally like Cate Blanchett - she's usually great and impressive. Fix or improve those elements, and Crystal Skull would be just as good the weakest of the original three (whichever that is for you).

I.J.4 may well be better than 5, but it is still absolutely, absurdly, awful. And l am saying that despite how much l love the cast overall and the return of Marion as a character. And Cate was amazing. But unfortunately, none of that can change how terrible it was.

I liked Dial - way better than online critics made it but Skull is better. Why? Because it has the Spielbergs direction and classic cinematography. There are shots that are just pleasing to the eye and soul. Only really bad moments are: Monkeys and waterfalls (but we got same kind of scene in Temple as well). Fridge scene is just fun never had problem with it.

Nothing tops the big 3: ROTLA, TOD, TLC. KOTCS served as a sufficient epilogue to the Indiana Jones story. DOD was an abomination that didn't need making to further conclude Indy's story.

Unfortunatly in my opinion, this movie has too many confusing and boring scenes. Why exactly were they in this storehouse? What exactly did his friend want? Then there were this long, boring fistfight and the even longer jungle chase. And the aliens didn't care for their indigenious friends, didn't say a word and just vanished. It felt most underwhelming.
