As an Indian, it is interesting to see how Western analysts see our country. What is surprising is the huge gulf that exists in the way Indians understand India and how the West understands India.

I imagine that’s true for most countries! We see through our own paradigms and projections. Even people within my own country get some things wrong about my region! There is much I don’t know about aspects of my country, as the diversity and regions vary a bit. What would you recommend, to a westerner, who is trying to learn more about India? What speaks to you, as far as a closer reflection to how you see things and what matters to you? I’m open to references :)

"Weak central govt"??? Feel funny.... Indian govt is one of the strongest govt in the world. True that India has lots of cultural, linguistic and religious diversity but united by strong political and economical forces. India is the best example for "Unity in diversity". India has more than 1000 spoken languages, 7 major religions, thousands of ethnic and tribal areas. But all are learned to live peacefully under strong secular democratic free enterprise economy of India!

After all Russia is the remnant of the one's strongest govt "USSR". You can't compare autocratic govt with democratic govt.

Every state in India has its own legacy, history and culture... In past every state has its own dynasty ruling and waging war on neighboring states. It was much like European countries. If we compare India with Europe then there would be 28 states... If one rebels the center can supress it with the power from 27 states, due to differences in culture and language or some issues ongoing between, no two neighboring states will make mutual alliance against central weather is weak or not.

+xihang yang there are a number of spearatist movements in Pakistan such as balochistan, pashtunistan, sindhudesh and pok which wants to unite with india. Further a number of sepratist movements suchs the inner mongolia sepratist movement, tibet sepratist movement and also east turkestan islamic movement. There is a lot of corruption and poverty in paksitan and china. China has the problem of ageing population, low birth rate which has compelled china to change is one child policy. controversial things about china are the lack of democracy, tianmen sqaure incident, falun gong , high pollution in metropolis being, poluution of rivers. It lacks transparency and is currently facing a major slowdown. China is coutry of brianless theives which steals defence technology from usa just like islamic beggar Pakistan which stole the nuclear technology from netherlands. furhter china and paksitan are cowards. China in its cowardice prevented the girl associated with falun gong to participate in the beauty contest similarly pakistan murdered the activist sabeen mahmud and its ye witess who was fightng the plight of baloch freedom fighters. further china also has a massive illegal organ harvesting trade in its country. The biggest challenge we face despite being the regional power is our neighbours. Pakistan, as a well known terrorist hub, is incessantly infiltrating the borders from the North, North-West and West. Surrounded by seas from three sides is also a disadvantage as it gives the enemies alternative routes to invade. China in the North is held just by the Himalayas, it is well associated in several border issues and infiltrates in the North-Eastern region and tries to make us feel their presence every now and then. Bangladesh is both poor and heavily populated, they are just like what Mexicans are with the US, no offense. Pakistan after failing to mark its presence in the Islamic world and the region is constantly involved in ceasefires along the border to send terrorists which the US has been sponsoring for decades. Additionally we have a complex and diverse large population to take care of.

some idiots in the comment section are stating that Burma was separate and parts of east India should go to Burma. But do you know that Burma was part of India. Greater India consisted of India, pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan ,Bangladesh and Burma. Though India was never considered as one whole country due to its varying cultures unlike europeans. India is different like China the regions south of Himalayas up till borders of Persia and until Thailand was once a single India because of our culture, similarities and ethnicity.Sri Lanka got separated during spread of Buddhism. Afghanistan got separated during the mongol era and spread of Islam.Nepal was also separated during British rule as they did not colonize it because it was a hilly place and they lost war to local ghoorkas and plus Nepal didn't have much wealtg and resources as rest of India. Burma got separated during British rule as they felt it would easier to govern as separate reasons as Burma was more near to French colonies. pakistan, Bangladesh and Bhutan separated post independence.

do their journalist even know how a federal system of governance work . The power of the executive is divided between the center and state in India . just because power is shared between the center and the state that doesn't imply that the central government is weak or incompetent but the constitution allows such a power sharing dynamic .Ironically Modi who's party has a historic majority in the national parliament (no party ever had such a clear majority for decades ) forms the central government. similarly each state including Delhi has its own legislative assembly ,which ever party has the majority in their respective legislative assemblies forms the state government which is independent from the central government therfore that doesn't mean that the prime minister and Chife minister of a state are engaged in medieval style control for power but instead work together. It is like saying that Barack Obama is weak because he no power over the Congress when they formulate the federal budget . This doesn't imply that he is weak but shows how power is shared between the legislative and executive . you don't need a PhD in political science to know that there is lot of difference in who a parliamentary and presidential democracy functions

they forgot to mention real challenges like : 1) lack of public toilets 2) vast wealth inequality (half of India's wealth is concentrated in the hands of the top 1%) 3) lack job opertunities in the organised sector ( even though 2 million jobs are created per year it is expected that more than a 100 million people will enter work force in the next five years) 4)lack of government hospitals therefore making making health care inaccessible to poor. 5) even though 60% of the population is employed in agriculture we import most of pulses . 6)high rate farmer suicides in India.

True that!! But even he cannot ignore the compulsions and criticalness of state-level politics. New Delhi CANNOT bully the states like that. Why do you think Modi has been desperately trying to (and even winning) state level elections?? To be a strong centre, he needs to have the provinces along with him. Jharkhand, Haryana, Maharashtra, Rajasthan are with him; JK is also another place for BJP dominance (Modi is the game-changer there!). Punjab and AP are allies, while UP, Bihar, WB and Odisha and the 3 remaining Southern states are elusive. NDA doesn't enjoy a dominance in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House) and that could be an Achilles heel for Modi. No sir, you can't ignore the harsh realities of the state-level politics in India.

Don't think of ruling parties while mentioning central government, Parties make tie for power that's what make them weak. With diverse cultures and languages among different states, none of the states are powerful enough to challenge central and carve out the separate country for themselves.. even the largest state with strong economy will not dare to do so. That's the power of Indian central government.
