First 30 minutes are more or less straightforward and then fucking magic with piano notes which looks to me like in old drawing owl joke: 1. Draw two circles. 2. Now draw the rest of damn owl. ;)

resampling drum loops is a great idea. you don't need to switch between patterns, just switch between tracks with drum loops. so it just increases the complexity of the composition of the whole project up to several times. great job!

It's not my idea, it's something I picked up from Ricky Tinez and made my own little workflow around it. It's very handy, since it frees up lots of tracks for either more drum variations, or more melodic tracks :)

err i have had a dt since release and learned 4 new things from this tut just skipping around for a few mins, excellent excellent

Back in the late 90s, I used to pay $100-$200 to get the kind of production value you've put together here. I asked myself alot throughout this video, "Why is he doing xyz... well everything after 18:24 explains why: It's dirty, very breakbeat in orientation, and what makes it better is that it was totally self-produced. My pleasure man, I'm glad you found it useful! I think it's a really fun way to jam, having drums on one side and melodies on the other side. I'm more comfortable finger drumming and stuff with my left hand so I have the drums to the left, but it would just just as well if you swapped it and used your right hand for drums.

Haha, yeah it's a bit of a process, but working with drum loops is super convenient. It's also the reason I make drum loops in bulk, as opposed to every time I want to make music.

I've got steps 1 and 2 down. 3 seems to be happening on it's own and 4 was never a factor to being with lol.

It could be cool to, instead of having 3 tracks for different drum patterns (the no kick etc), just use one track and change the sample slot on the one track as you play, or set up the lfo to change between them. Probably not the easiest work flow but could be useful if you need more sample slots for other things

Thanks! Great intro for someone who is taking his first steps, in both sampling and using the Digitakt. Perhaps you’ve taken for granted some of the steps and didn’t explain why you did those, like accelerating before resampling and then slowing it down again (I’ve read your explanation here though). Thanks, Bobby! I'm thinking of maybe making a video on it, but the gist of it is that I'm using the Digitakt as an audio interface on my laptop. After you've installed Overbridge and updated the Digitakt and everything's hooked up, you can make your DAW use the DT as the audio device and record directly into the DAW. I use my phone as a camera, and my voice is recorded into the phone. When I'm done filming, I put the video and audio together in Windows Movie Maker and make sure they're in sync.

Thank you, I'm glad you found it useful! Yeah, saving space is one reason (only 1gb storage). I went into detail in another comment that for some reason only shows up when you sort by new, so I'll repost it here: I think you can get the same effect other ways, but when you pitch up and speed up the beat, the attack and release of the compressor stays the same. Same with the reverb and delay being sent to the reverb. When you pitch the recorded loop back down, the compressor's attack and release is even more pronounced. I haven't done any A-B comparisons, but I think the bit reduction sounds very different on a sample that has been bit reduced, THEN pitched down than on a sample at normal pitch, THEN bit reduced. Pitching down samples also makes it more lo-fi, because you're basically taking a set of data and spreading it over a longer time period than intended!

Beside freeing tracks, are you doing this to avoid the Delay running late in the Pattern and to have the tails of the reverb?

Yeah, mostly to get all the drums to contain the tail end of the drum before it. I think this is what gives them that chopped up drum sound when slicing and rearranging them.

Hi, thank you for the video. Love your uploads! With the whole tempo up pitch up and then down again I have a question. Why are these exact numbers, why to 130 bpm and not higher? And why pitch up by 10? Also I guess if I want my drums tuned for the rest of the thing this approach doesn’t really work. Really trying to make sense of the whole thing in my head :)

Thanks for watching, Roni! The idea behind these numbers was that I didn't want them to be exact. That way I'd have to approach each drum loop completely differently from each other, which I thought would be inspiring. Lately I've been doing things more straight forward: double the bpm and go an octave up in pitch. This takes a lot of the guess work out of using the loops which is faster, but I gotta say that the way I do it in this tutorial made me consider each drum loop more carefully when using them. Which was good for learning and for experimenting, but can be slow if you just want to make music.

Thank you! The lower row of trigs are the midi tracks, and can't be switched around for a normal sample track, sadly. The midi tracks don't make any sound on their own, they just send note info to other gear and stuff. If you have a DAW, you can control plugins with those midi tracks.

I have a theory question: (Im familiar with sampling - been sampling, pitch shifting, truncating, chopping since the emulator days). 10:15 My question, what was the purpose of speeding up your pattern to 120 and shifting up the pitches before you re-sampled the pattern (loop), and then dialing it back down. To save space? To add filth since you will revert it to slower?. I might dig if I watched it a second time. Great content on your channel. I own a Digitakt and just picked up a Digitone which is one of my favorite purchases in the last 3 years and I can't say good things enough about it. Thanks for your work. Subscribed.

Hey, thanks for watching! I think recording things sped up was done to save space on older samplers, and that's partially why we're doing it here too (1GB to work with). I think you can get the same effect by tweaking the right parameters, but when you speed up the BPM and raise pitch, some things stay the same, like reverb length and compressor attack and release. When you pitch it the resampled loop down, these things get stretched out. I haven't double checked this, but I think the bit reduction sounds different on a sample that was bit reduced at a higher pitch, THEN pitched down. That said, if I can get the same results with fewer steps, that would be better! The Digitakt is really fun to use, and I'm really interested in the Digitone, too. Thanks again for checking out my stuff!

Most FM synthesis keyboards from the 80's like the DX7, etc, have the expected sound, and remind you of crap that came out in the 80's like Steve Winwood solo, or Whitney Houston. Not the Digitone. It has a more dark and haunting tonality which reminds you of Violator and such. Your content is excellent and I think if you joined the Digitone in your works it would sound like more than the sum of two devices. Thanks again!

if you were a songwriter and wanted one elektron box to write a mix of synth and drum soundscapes which would you pick ?

My understand is that you do this drum protocol to A.save tracks B.have easy control on drums as freq groups(lo\mid\hi). Am I right? Then my question is why you pitch them up, sample, then down? Is it to make it more lo-fi and gritty, something I missed? Thanks! Great stuff here.

You're right! Pitching up to record then pitching back down makes the sample more lofi, but it also literally makes the file size smaller so I can fit more stuff on the Digitakt, since it only has 1GB of space. Thanks a lot, man :)

Ivar im stuck. I am at the recreate pattern stage. I have set all start points and trig lenghth to 1/8 but it wont play past the the first start point of 15 it just keeps looping there please help

HI .. thanks for this. Quick question tho, for the life of me I cannot change the BPM of my track, nor can I switch from Global to Pattern on the Tempo. Its just stuck on 120 and not moving. I've factory reset, disabled all clocks apart from the Clock Send yet still have the issue on new and existing tracks Any suggestions would be most appreciated

Hi Ivar, what's funny is I don't own a DT, but watched your video from start to finish. Very well put, very informative. There's something I don't get tho, it's... Why do you resamble your beats? Why not just add compression and drive and bit reduction, reverb & delay and then go with it? I guess it's tied with the other question : why pitch samples up and resample it before pitching it down again? Does it give the sound a certain touch? And is it why you actually resample the whole thing? Thanks a lot for your answer!

Thanks a lot man, that's so cool to hear :D There are a few reasons to why I resample beats, and the main one is to free up tracks for other things, like drum variations or melodies. The reason I like to resample with bit reduction, reverb, delay, compression, an drive is to to intentionally make the sample sound dirty. Sampling at double speed and pitch makes the whole sample more lo-fi when you pitch it back down. This saves space on the Digitakt, too. When a drum loop has been heavily processed like this, you get a pretty cool sound when chopping it up and rearranging it. You'll get a snare with the ending of a kick in it, a kick with the tail end of an open hat in it, a hihat with a hint of snare, stuff like that. Also, the sound becomes even more intense when you apply compression, drive, and bit reduction to a sample that's already been compressed and overdriven, but this time you'll be compressing the baked in reverb and delay, too :)

Thank you for this. I've had my Digitakt for a couple of weeks but have not been able to make something good yet, this will surely help me a bit on the way. I was following along pretty well with this tutorial, but there were some parts in which I must have made some mistakes because everything you did wasn't working for me, however I found other ways to tackle that. My biggest question still stands though, as I have no idea how to explain what you are doing at 36:00 for example, how are you changing what's being played without muting any tracks? I thought you had to hold down FUNC and click on the things you want to mute, but here you are just looping the song and simply clicking the things you want to be played or not. It also looks like the "BANK" button is lit up, which mine is not, does that have anything to do with it, or what mode are you in to be able to play it like this?

Hey Heidis. I’m a noob myself. So this video is blowing my mind lol. He’s hitting FUNC+BANK which gives you ‘’mute mode’’ In this mode you don’t need to hold func the whole time. If you hit the FUNC+BANK key combo twice it will toggle between global mutes and pattern mutes. I think... I’m still down the rabbit hole myself. Buying this was the stupidest thing I could have done for my finances. But the best thing I did for my brain in months. Cheers!

Hey man, thanks for watching! Press FUNC+BANK to enter mute mode. It'll basically be as if you're holding down FUNC to mute. You're right about the BANK button being lit, it does that in mute mode. There are two mute modes though, if you hold FUNC and press BANK multiple times, the tracks will switch between glowing green and purple. Green mutes is the global mute mode, where the mute states carry over to other patterns, and the purple on is pattern mute mode, where the mute state is saved per pattern.

@@IvarTryti thanks a lot, that also explain the purple bit, I thought it was just some cool mod that some people had on it lol. I'll try it out next time I'm working on my Digitakt!

Awesome tutorial but really frustrating for me I can't manage to recreate the pattern. I don't know what I missed to do it. After recorded the pattern when I paste it, it doesn't sound at all of what I just recorded and I am stuck there

Hi Ivar! First I want to thank you for your great tutorials about the digitakt! They helped me a lot! But I dont understand why you speed up your loop before you resample it. And after that you pitch it down again, why?

Thank you! There are two reasons: one is to make the sample smaller in size since the digitakt only has 1gb of space, and the other is to make it more lofi. It works well for trip hop, but for other genres it might be better to skip this part.
