Heavy-duty self-propelled trucks are considered transport wonders. Their engines have more than five hundred horsepower and their agile chassis has eight wheels per axle line. This allows them to drive not only forwards and backwards, but also sideways and diagonally. Whether steep inclines, steep declines or difficult surfaces, they are true off-road professionals. They can move loads up to seven times their own weight. They are used when other transport systems fail.

    The SPMT's shown here are Goldhofer's. There are several manufacturers making this type of unit including Scheuerle, Kamag, Cometto, Nicolas, and Anster and they all essentially the same in their construction and operation. For highway use they will frequently remove the power unit and pull them with a tractor unit. If the terrain is more demanding, they can be rigged up with a pusher pull setup using two tractors fore and aft. There are also SPT trailers that do not use hydraulics but linkages to control the unit.

    The development by the engineers partly based on the customer specification and subsequently the realization of the project by logistics and executive crew is top notch. The many techniques that have to work 'together' in these types of projects and are put together into a coherent working system is a complex task. And perfectly realized. Chapeaux

    If the power unit fails, there are locks in the hydraulic lines so the suspension doesn't collapse. The brakes are air-powered. These are built so that you need air pressure to release the brakes. When the system pressure drops below the threshold, the brakes are applied automatically. So in a failure you're stuck in place for a while until they can bring out a new power unit, but the load remains secure. Swap the power unit (or just attach the new power unit to the other side of the SPMT), and you're ready to go.

    The SPMT was invented in the early 1980s at Mammoet, a Dutch heavy haulage company. They created the concept and set the standard: modules with 4 or 6 axle lines and a width of 2.44 m so they could be transported in ISO containers. They commissioned Scheuerle to build the modules. Several companies these days build similar modules.

    A fantastic machine , but driving by hydrolics seems a lot of work to construct, high pressure tanks and all that pipeing , posibility of leaks . I wonder if electric would be easier ,the powerpack would be a diesiel generator and an electric motor on each drive wheel.

    Mammoet/Scheuerle are experimenting with electric SPMTs. These use an electric power unit to drive hydraulic pumps, so the SPMT itself is still hydraulic. The biggest problem is the lifting system. This has to carry the weight of the load, and be compact enough to fit between the wheels of a wheel unit. Hydraulics are an excellent solution for providing a lot of lifting power in a small package. I'm not aware of electric solutions that could fit in there.

    Hydraulic motors are a smaller package. And the 400 Bar pressure forcing the action is easy to control to inch forwards. No gearing needed.

    standard truck tires are at the same range, 100 to 120 psi, so 128 is completely within a normal range for heavy load tires

    High-performance wheelchair tires inflate to 140 psi easy (and yes, they pop when the tube blows out…hence the need for tires cages when inflating big rig tires). Different tires can reach pretty high psi…not unheard of and quite common actually!

    Way to bulky for the same output and space is of a premium in these units. Can you imagine the gearbox needed to perform the lifting action (consider the weight!), the motors needed to traverse (with reduction gearboxes!) or the motors and reduction gearboxes needed to steer it? No, hydraulic is way and above electrics.

    It's mind blowing that one of these things move a few hundred tons, but the earlier stages of the Egyptian civilization were able to move single piece statues and obelisks in excess of 1000 tons. And we're supposed to believe they did it with teams of slaves pulling on ropes with the rock laid on top of logs.

And we also "proved" that all the precision granite cutting was done with copper saws and sand because Mark Lehner was able to make a crude scratch into a block in his experiment...

    ​@@zounds010Used to work for a company who moved heavy machinery in factories and the roller method was used in the majority of occasions. If the machinery wasn't smooth on the underside, we fabricated a framework for under it. Some of the stuff we moved was HEAVY!!👍👍

    These aren't car tires. The pressure is very high, and a failure can be lethal. And this is the first time these new tires are inflated, so that's when you find out about manufacturing defects.

    Stupid Head ... these tires have 128 psi in them not 30 like a car tire. And just as a reminder; PSI stands for Pounds per Square Inch which means that every single square inch inside the tire experiences 128 pounds of pressure. That is 18,432 pounds of pressure on a 1 square foot area - I think those cages are definitely necessary.
